Thanks for shedding a light on Kazuko Shibuya's contributions to Final Fantasy. I only recently found out about how much she shaped the series. And while I've always been a fan of Amano, I wish I learned about Shibuya earlier and hope more fans start seeing her as one of the "forefathers" of Final Fantasy.

Thanks for watching, it was the first time Kazuko Shibuya was doing a video interview so she was a bit nervous but we're glad we could shed some light on her work.

Amano-san, such a legend, so inspiring, such beautiful, unique art.
Oh wow! That was so fabulous! Thank you! I've been illustrating professionally for 20 years and I was becoming jaded, but discovering Amano's process a bit over a decade ago really pushed me and motivated me again. Every time I listen to him I am reminded why I do this job, I feel much the same about realism.

7:58 The fact that he still has all these pieces, especially that NP strategy guide cover, almost brings a tear to my eye. Six is my favorite, by a long shot, and Kefka's my favorite villain too (he's a style icon and I won't have anyone tell me otherwise); hearing Shibuya and Amano reminisce fondly about their work together, in particular on something that means so much to me, warms my heart like nothing else. Wonderfully produced documentary! Looks like I found a new channel to subscribe to.

Amazing. Shibuya and Amano have been massive inpirations to me ever since childhood. I had never known such beautiful art to grace a game series, and when I exposed to Amano for the first time, I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. My child brain simply said "whoa, this is like real art". Shibuya's beautiful rendition of pixel art was unmatched in my eyes as well, and the combination of Amano/Shibuya felt like a step above anything in the medium for games. It still feels like that today, too. I particularly enjoyed your focus on Final Fantasy VI. That remains as my favorite Final Fantasy, 27 years later. It's still so, so very beautiful to me, thanks to the amazing talent behind Amano and Shibuya. Thank you for this. :]

Learning about Shibuya's work has been wonderful, her pixel art will be always iconic in my mind since I have spent countless hours interacting with it. Thank you madame and thanks to everyone involve in the creation of this material.

Very nice. I love seeing how you juxtaposed both their perspectives on the same or similar events. Their perspectives on their work are also illuminating, even if I don't think I feel the same way (for example, how Amano chooses to simply forget a picture once it's in the past for him), it does give insight into why each of their works are the way they are. Thanks for making and posting this!
@cutscenes17583 жыл бұрын
Thank you! As for Amano, he most likely doesn't "choose" to forget a picture after finishing it, but his mindset just directs him towards the next piece. However, he told us off-camera that he rarely remembers character names but remembers them visually, so it strikes us that he doesn't really "forget" about the visual identity of the characters he draws.

hey, just wanted to say, i feel strangely moved by the presence of the greek subs in this video. i almost never expect to see subtitles in my native language in anything i watch on youtube or on most places on the internet. obviously i myself dont need them, but it's just a fact of life to me that most of the internet is in english, and i know how much work it is to make subtitles even for a shorter video, so it moves me quite a bit that someone went through that trouble for a language that doesn't have hundreds of millions of speakers. so yeah, thanks a bunch.

there are also interviews with the developers of ff6 that say that the sprites were first and Amano based his art on that. "incidentally, there are differences in the details between the character drawings that Yoshitaka Amano did for FFVI and the ones appearing in the game, but why is that? (Sakaguchi) That’s because Mr. Amano was working on those at the same time we were working on the game. (Shibuya) Even now I still often get asked “Is Terra’s hair blond or green?”. If we’d gone by Mr. Amano’s designs, just about all of the characters would have blond hair, and it would be harder to distinguish between them. And having them all be blond would dilute their distinctive traits as well. So I had control over the character colors on-screen while Mr. Amano was free to draw them however he liked. Also, did Amano’s illustrations or Ms. Shibuya’s pixel art come first? (Sakaguchi) Shibuya’s came first in just about every case."
