Beautiful reflections, that underscore Simone Weil's ideas related to attention and will. Specifically: when she wrote: "Attention, taken to its highest degree, is the same thing as prayer. It presupposes faith and love." and " Absolutely unmixed attention is prayer." and "If we turn our mind toward the good, it is impossible that little by little the whole soul will not be attracted thereto in spite of itself." I had not read Gravity and Grace until you mentioned it, recently, and am just now having the pleasure of soaking in some of this timeless wisdom, and am understanding better what the stoic philosophers offer as well..many thanks for the weekly food for thought.

I just returned to Canada after a week in Lithuania where we organized classical concerts in prisons in and around Lithuania, you have helped me see that the group of people who made this a possibility are people who showed how much an act of giving made others, who only see darkness in prison, the ability to step out and see heaven for a moment and perhaps share that heaven with someone else. True acts of kindness.

I initially read the title as "You are known by your cats" and I was ready to just run with it haha. This topic reminded me of an entry I found in one of my journals from high school. I determined that while I do not have power over much of the world, I have power over absolutes. Stating that no one cares about something is untrue if I care about it. Stating that everyone is bad will be untrue if I am good. To this day caring, having empathy, and living up to my own ideals brings me comfort because at least I know for sure that somebody cares.

I pick up other peoples trash all the time, but at the same time I feel a resentment towards them for leaving the trash and being so uncaring. I never thought of it as they don’t love themselves enough to pick up their trash. I’ll try and feel compassion for them from now on.
@quinnco9Ай бұрын
To echo some of his past videos, we don’t know for sure what fortune brings or what caused this specific person to leave unsecured trash (ignorance, forgetfulness, disregard, spite, a sudden emergency?). Thus it’s not on us to judge or blame them, especially not having seen them ourselves. Regardless, we’ve been presented with an opportunity to make our local environment a slightly better place by sticking to our principles and focusing on what we can control instead of someone else’s actions.

@@quinnco9 @Englishroserebecca I am also a volunteer litterpicker and pick daily. My motivation is to help wildlife, the animals cannot pick up the rubbish other folks leave behind. I often wonder about the headspace of folk who litter, sometimes it can really get on my nerves to the point where can get quite angry, I then have to re-mind myself why am picking in first place. Cleaning up the messiness is cleansing the space of negativity. Anger is counter-productive to my efforts. I also never considered that these folk maybe don't like or love themselves and it similarly didn't cross my mind that the reason I pick, is because I love myself. I channel alot of my energy into poetry and art, with the aim of raising awareness of the damage litter does to the animals and our shared space, but now I have another angle to contemplate and further explore. Thank you muchly.

I was thinking about this the other day, it's especially your consistency with those actions that shapes how others see you, and how you see your own self really. You being late one time doesn't make you a flakey person, but you doing that repeatedly is what really makes you one.

We either accept the universe that we come into contact with or do not. To live a good life. What does that mean? Having gratitude, aiming high, preparing our goals, self-belief, realising that it is key to our survival, encouragement, motivating factors, having the correct and proper attitude. Finding seekers on the journey to the path of self-discovery is what we should all aspire to but being and awareness, being an instrument of change, being aware of humanity, what tests us, what divides us, what brings us together gives meaning and purpose to life. Your videos have set me upon a new path to the dedication of myself to thought and philosophy. I have often thought of the term intellectual. To me, humanity is made up of individuals not a collective of intellectuals. These videos of yours are powerful for the individual and the collective. They make profound statements about the world we live in today and are challenging as well as meaningful. They are meant for the thinker and the do-er, the teacher, the apprentice, and the master.

Thank you for this! I really struggle with the concepts of and required actions in "loving oneself" and "self acceptance" all the while you are not what you want to be/who you want to be/still have many flaws/unhelpful undesireable habits. Normally, if we don't like someone - we move away from them; certainly we don't stay around any longer than we must, and certainly we don't go out of our way to be in their company and finally, it's a relief when we can get away from them. In one of Laura Marling's songs, there's a line that says, "It's hard to accept yourself as someone you don't desire". Tricky.

"Hello Marvel, could you explain the philosophy of J. Krishnamurti? He is a relatively lesser-known figure."
@PrinceJha-fz4cv18 күн бұрын
I just today read some of my notes from Jiddu Krishnamirty's lectures.. If you don't mind, I am vomiting them here as they are too good to not be shared : Understand this perspective, we must first acknowledge the fundamental distinction between the observing consciousness and the observed content of the mind." Think of it this way: while thoughts, opinions, ideals, and principles may change, fluctuate, or even disappear entirely, there is always a constant witness to their coming and going. This witness - the pure, untainted awareness that observes all mental phenomena - is the truest expression of the self." This observing consciousness is timeless, spaceless, and unchanging.
@PrinceJha-fz4cv18 күн бұрын
Some more : Think of awareness itself as a constant presence, underlying and supporting all the fleeting mental phenomena - thoughts, feelings, perceptions. Even in the absence of specific contents, there remains a primal, pre-verbal knowing of one's own existence. Consider a simple experiment: try to attend to the act of reading this very text. Observe how, amidst the process of interpreting the words, there persists a background awareness of the fact that you are here, that you exist as a conscious being engaging with these ideas." That bare, naked awareness - free of conceptual embellishment - is, in my view, the closest approximation we have to a definition of the unchanging self.

Thank you very much, as always enjoyed your very practical wisdom and I think now understood even more why you prefer ancient philosophers. This vid specially important for me. I have problems with "acting". Too busy of distracting myself from distraction by distraction. Also I'm glad that I took some references that you've putted here. Not sure if it is from Socrat, Plato or even Kant that we are born with the feeling of what's good and what's no, with moral compass, but I think the same way. And Bible reference here is so vital with angle of Heaven and Hell on Earth. I was listening while riding my stationary bike and after cardio I have what is called "runners high" so my text is kinda weird, but i loved this vid. It is great, though as always.

My #1 goal in life is to heal into a heartspace where I can look at everyone and everything that ever hurt me, with love. To say "you tried to taint my mind, my heart, and my soul. But I took you and alchemized you into understanding, love, and strength" Because, in that moment, it'll be as if it never touched me at all. Just temporary shadowy monsters that only made me sad and cower and hateful for only a little while Hurt people just go on to hurt more people. And then what? We hurt the world because WE didn't take the time to learn to stop hurting our OWN selves I apologize for the rant. It just kinda happened so I'll leave it lol

Another great video. I had this concept in my mind for the past week, but thinking about the bad decisions we make within society and our personal relationships. No one wants to be burden by financial debt because we made bad choices. So why burden ourselves spiritually through social debt and be perceived negatively for bad acts? Of course we don't want this level of guilt on our conscience. Let's all be mindful of how we are, what we do and how we hold these acts against ourselves. Looking forward to the next video!
