Very grateful for these teachings, and the beautiful distillations you offer us in these videos. My partner chose to end his life two months ago, and your channel has been one of the most profound nodes of calm throughout this wrenching time. I was moved to learn just today that Seneca has written in-depth about suicide (and himself was sentenced to self-inflicted death by Nero), and feel incredibly lucky to have access to these writings while traversing this grieving process. Though my partner did not share his suicidal ideation with me or any others, in the final months of his life, I would sometimes hear a quiet voice in my head say ‘You have to love this man as though you will never see him again’, and then recede back into my subconscious. Your words about habituating the practice of reminding ourselves that those we love are mortal rings beyond true. Thank you so much for what you extend so selflessly, to all of us strangers. We are listening closely, and your voice helps more than you can imagine.

I was reminded of Murphy’s Law from Interstellar and how it relates to the inevitability of challenges we face in life. Just as the characters in the film encountered unexpected obstacles despite their best efforts, the speaker emphasizes that we are bound to face difficulties. Instead of being caught off guard, we should anticipate these moments, prepare for them, and accept that falling down is part of the journey. It’s a powerful reminder that acceptance can lead to resilience in the face of life’s uncertainties.

I have done this all my life: to make inevitable events worse and torture myself further, over things I have no control. Big mountains out of molehills. I don't know why I learned this, how, when, if I indeed it was learned or if I developped this my own self. So, increase appreciation. Thank you for this video.

It's interesting to think about... how everything we go through and experience in life is temporary. And we are too. Anything can be taken from us at any time. Anything can happen to us at any time. Or to those we love I can see how it is beneficial to keep this in the back of our minds. How it helps with being prepared as well as staying more mindful with these temporary things. I'll work on practicing this more Also, I loved the quote in your newsletter today! Remembering that we create a lot of our own suffering in our own heads keeps me in a more rational headspace Thank you for everything you do for us ❤

After a string of misfortunes, I was constantly trying to be in control of my life but the more I tried doing this, the more I found myself spiralling into depression and constantly facing disappointments. 😢 I’ve now accepted that life is just unpredictable and that we just have to follow where the water flows and not set very high expectations, otherwise we’ll just continue to live in discontentment. It’s much healthier to accept that things won’t always turn out the way we plan, but we can try to draw meaning from the unforeseen circumstances and make it feel like it happened for a reason!

What a reminder to be grateful for the things we take for granted! From a very young age the realization that all living beings will one day fade away made me want to seek harmony, goodness, cooperation - the best "coexistence" - with nature, with others. I've watched people misplace their focus on being petty, vindictive, or plain ugly and I can't fathom this when life is so brief. I am watching loved ones age and am keenly aware of how difficult it is for humans to accept the loss of physical and mental prowess, even for those who cultivate a positive attitude. Watching a loved one become frail and incapacitated from illness is sad, difficult to accept; but it also makes me so appreciate my own current state of health. Brings to mind the adage "health is wealth". Makes me savor the simple things. My mother was a simple, salt of the earth type of woman. She died when I was 19, but I still remember her being so grateful for the simplest of things -- a tall glass of cool water after thirsting for one, for example. She would express her gratitude to God for such things out loud (that's how I even know about it). She would say her soul was restored/refreshed. Her demands from life were minimal.

Great *thought* with the intensifying or lessening of the pain of loss with every moment, of anything.
@docrock664 ай бұрын
This letter was detailed. I often hurt when someone else hurts, yet sometimes I get bothered by others' lack of empathy. This distraction takes me away from my moment and the moment I can offer someone a proper understanding of what they are going through. As they are presently going through pains, we could go through the same as a unit, if not now, then in the distant or near future, wishfully with preparedness. Thanks greatly!

Quote from Andrew Anabi: Every time you do something that is one less time you do it. One day you will do something the final time and you will rarely know when that day comes. For all you know, today might be the last time you walk in a particular neighborhood. Or it might be the last time you smile at a particular someone. To think otherwise, would be foolish. Nothing is guaranteed, except this moment. Your only real choice is to cherish every exchange like it is your last - because it very well might be. Therefore, the best way to cherish life is to remind yourself of life's impermanence. It is to remember that every time you see someone that is one less time you see them. It is to remember that every time you go somewhere that is one less time you visit. By doing this, you naturally slow down. Almost like a reflex, you start to truly live.

Actually when some tragedy happens to others, anywhere in the world, i do feel it as if it's happening to me in a way, and it can bring me pain desolation and tears. The reason why it doesn't nowadays is cause growing up i learned to not focus on certain things and distract myself in order to cope with the world's suffering. The same method more or less I apply to my own causes of pain. ...

@@mirkacihlar8110 Thank you for reading and responding! I think it isn't much life itself that is unfair, but the people who run this world and with our cooperation make it unfair. Some religions teach it's karma... but I don't quite buy this theory...

@@benettinger5910 Wow. To be honest, I don't really care what neuroscience claims. I know my own experience. Who said that I am constantly crying or depressed? And who said I'm feeling anger? I can very well distinguish when I experience sadness OR anger for what I'M going through or sadness OR anger for what others are going through! Trust me, there is a BIG difference.
@martamariotto11814 ай бұрын
@@benettinger5910 One more thing. Your scientists in their usual narrowmindedness have not taken into account that there's more than the brain matter at our disposal. Secondly, they might have not taken into account that in order to feel others' tragedies you can automatically connect to the experience of one single person and that is quite enough. Who cares about the supposed "bandwith".
@martamariotto11814 ай бұрын
@@benettinger5910 I don't even know what shouldering means. I think you are reading a little too much into my simple comment. Way too much. And you are not even reading correctly: ANYWHERE in the world was meant as "no matter WHERE", certainly not as EVERYWHERE. But maybe since I am Italian I am not able to express myself correctly enough. Or maybe you just want to exaggerate to prove your point? Second thing you missed: I wrote that I used to feel deep sadness for other people's tragedies or conditions and that it's not like that any longer! That means it is something that belongs to my younger years! Something that led me to become a volunteer in Africa and a peaceful VEGAN for 15 years (I translated The World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle in Italian and also did not get a dime for the one year work), I never marched a street for any kind of world injustice. I very well know how this world functions and the days of grief and sadness for it are gone. Third, I don't SEEK the pain of others, I stay away from that as much as I can, I cannot even look at people's suffering, and I only went to Africa as a teacher cause I could not bear anything more than that. Fourth and lastly: if I were to considered your precious "scientific data" for everything in life, I would probably be buried underground by now. Thank God i DON'T and I WON'T. My head comes before the "science". But you are free to rely on whatever you wish, and I think we've gone a little too far into my business already. So you will excuse me if now I bid you good-bye and take care. Thanx

So I just think how can we humans not struggle mentally knowing that is our fate? I was really not prepared for my friends choice to end her life 6 months ago. That really messed me up, I honestly didn't think it was the right move but I accepted her choice because I loved her. It's strange I always expected a man to break my heart but I never expected that my very good friend would destroy my heart, more then I could ever imagine.

1. Don't be surprised of the unfortunate events that happen to you 2. When such unfortunate happens to a stranger you will console them by saying that such things happen and that's the way of life 3. You perceive the small unfortunate events that happen to you as larger than the worse events that happen to others 4. You suffer more because of your unpreparedness for such unfortunate events 5. Practice reminding yourself the possibility of such unfortunate events 6. Practice appreciating each such possibility for having not turned out to be unfortunate 7. Practice not to attribute the events that are inevitable to have been unfortunate Like Seneca says in his letters "Rehearse death"

I read somewhere that you should sometimes imagine beeing very very old, not able to walk. If you were given the chance to live a day in your current body, what would you do? This thought makes me want to run, swim, dance as much as I can because I won’t always be able to. However, where do you draw the line between what you call preparation, and anxiety? I already think a lot about what could happen to loved ones and yes it makes me feel grateful to have them but also constantly fearing the worst..
