Hard to say what my biggest self-delusion I've caught myself in. Usually when I identify an self-delusion, I discard and move on. Convincing myself I didn't have the self-delusion in the first place.

We’re dealing with all this unknown and its power; how else to humble your own ego than to spend time in the unknown? A lot of us get bored and sad, when the best solution could be learning what you don’t know, and there’s so much you don’t know in the world

I hae gone through meditation to force myself to narrow my focus. I still catch myself judging people or mentally painting them. It really is almost automatic. Heck even caught a few mental racial words here and there traced back from when I was a kid. People said that stuff all the time I had no idea I was slowly thinking it. I didn't mean it of course but there it was within the clouds of bias. Let yourself sit and think guys, you will be surprised where it takes you and why.

Ok I gave it a second listen at the gym, and I have a few followup thoughts: -these are all concepts taught in introductory psychology courses. It's cool that mcraney wrote a fairly accurate pop psych book about them, but they are all taught in intro psych so I wouldn't give much credit to him for uncovering any of these. -at the beginning you, or mcraney, Idk if this is a summary of his book which is a summary of intro psych chapter 1-6, but it's asserted that most of the meaning that people make is irrational and is actually explained by pure chance. I still take issue with this. It's important to understand that there are a few assumptions that need to be made to hold up this claim (that our external reality is 100% rational, that meaning making is a purely irrational process, and that irrationality has no merit), which tread on philosophical waters. I think it's important to acknowledge that subjectivity and philosophical concepts can't really be rejected through rationality because they are inherently irrational and they are responses to the claim that some things "outside of man" are irrational as well. And there is that experiment that showed when physical entities are being measured, their behaviour changes. So yeah, seemingly unrelated concepts can influence each other and I don't believe that there is such a thing as "pure chance" or meaninglessness. Me trying to shove a metaphorical square peg into a circular hole may not mean what I assert it means, but there is baseline meaning in all things that we just are not privy to. My opinion of course. I agree we should be vigilant against our own biases and shortcomings, but some extreme statements were made here based on the fact that those biases and shortcomings exist.

@noosy530 I see you’ve brought Jung into the conversation, which is an interesting angle! But here’s the twist, my friend-Jung would actually nod along to a lot of what’s being laid down here. Sure, he delved deep into the unconscious, but even he knew that we’re all navigating life through stories and symbols we don’t fully understand. Self-deception isn’t about nihilism; it’s about being aware of the traps your mind sets, even while you’re creating meaning. You can be a fool, just like everyone else, but understanding *why* you’re fooling yourself? That’s the game-changer. And trust me, it's not just for the machines.

Oh they are patterns, though the meaning you put in is made up. Though if a pattern appears often enough tied to the same thought/action, than you can assume that the meaning you put on that particular appearance, is highly likely to be true, even if it’s just for yourself. Don’t know if other people have the exact same guide of the “universe” but I am certain for myself. I wish it was random or coincidence, that would set me free to be more bold and random.

We are exploring the tendency to conjure scenarios in which we believe others are judging or criticizing us, despite our inability to know what they truly think or even if they are thinking about us at all.
