You Bet Your Life #55-18 Mr. Anthony, advice expert; Billy Pearson, jockey ('Room', Jan 26, 1956)

John J. Anthony was famous for his TV show where he gave advice to people who appeared anonymously (hence his reference at one point to the commonly used warning on his show, "No names, please!") Billy Pearson is the real highlight of the show, though. He's a very personable jockey who has a side wager going with a couple of his jockey friends on how well he'll do in the quiz (he's trying to make up for a bad run in Vegas).
There was no time for the third couple, so there were only two pairs of contestants in this show.

That is John J. Anthony who had a huge radio audience in his heyday with his 'Court of Human Emotions'. Woody Allen made fun of him hilariously in the movie Radio Days.

I remember watching this show when it was released in the 50's sitting in my Grandmothers living room watching on her floor model Sears Black and White TVwith the large ash tray on top !! The houses those days were filled with ash trays,I'm sure Groucho has one in front of him, on his little table.

SuperWinterborn Credit for that goes to the production staff. Groucho didn't even meet the contestants before the show, in order to preserve a feeling of spontaneity (despite the fact that he always had scripted jokes to fall back on).

And as for Billy Pearson, I was just watching an episode of Perry Mason he was on it. And I was saying to myself that either that guy is a fly weight fighter from back in the days. Billy Pearson after this partecipation went also to the $64000 question quiz show and won more than $150000. But... who knows if he was really a champion or just being fed whit the answers like later on was revealed being the habit in those shows. I think that You bet your life was one of the few clean quiz show of the tv in those times...

@@henningandersen9027 I've had to resort to the radio broadcasts. Groucho apparently did two broadcasts simultaneously--one radio and one tv although some tv have appeared on the radio ones. You can catch them on a few channels here.

Having watched a good number of the episodes by now and having learned a lot of the behind the scenes of how the show was filmed and edited, I suddenly realized there were two pieces of information that didn't fit together at first. During this episode, George mentions that they don't have time for the usual three rounds. And yet, we know that they filmed more than they needed and edited it down to fit the time slot. So how could they run out of time? The most logical explanation is that what they were really saying is that if they continued, they were in danger of running out of film. At least that's my guess.

I'm almost certain that these little bits where Fenneman makes references to "running short on time" and such were all filmed later and spliced in when the editing was done (similar to the bits where the secret word is mentioned, or the amounts won by competing couples when the quiz was a competition). They went as far in editing as to use segments from different recording sessions to make up a show, which is the main reason Groucho always wore the same outfit. Sometimes it had nothing to do with the timing at all-- if they had a dud segment on their hands, they might edit it down to the bone and shove it in as a seemingly rushed final segment. Just as with their continuing to claim they picked contestants directly from the audience just before the show, this was all a matter of showmanship, not entirely honest, but certainly harmless. I'm impressed you notice these details-- you should really get a copy of YBYL director Robert Dwan's book, "As Long As They're Laughing". I think you'd really appreciate the level of detail he offered.

Now isn't that an interesting coincidence. I read about a year ago that Joe Friday and Bill Gannon wore the same outfits for an entire season of Dragnet while on official duty (the occasional scene outside of work would be the only exception). It had something to do with episodes not always being shot sequentially to help cut costs on locations shots. The concern was continuity if they wore different outfits from one episode to the next. Of course, George Fenneman was an announcer on both shows. Thank you for that tidbit on the contestants selected just before the show. If I recall, they often claimed that it was the audience who selected them (e.g. we invited a group of female swimmers to the show and the audience selected ...). Not exactly honest, but no harm, no foul, I guess. As for me noting detail, it came in handy when I edited newsletters in the past and certainly comes in handy when I prepare tax returns for my clients. I have to look for what might be missing as much as nuances regarding what the client gave me. One thing that helps accomplish that is having studied Eastern ways of thinking: usually more right hemisphere oriented and looking at the spaces between the fingers (for example) as much as looking at the fingers. While I identify as a Christian, not as an adherent of any Eastern religion, the discipline has been valuable and does not conflict with my faith at all. I find it interesting that the development of the major monotheistic religions of the world all sprang forth from the crucible of the Middle East, the trade crossroads between the East and West. I will have to look for Robert Dwan's book. I thought I remember you writing that the book was difficult to find, but I also know that your comments span at least two years' time frame (based on You Tube's elapsed time notation), so perhaps new sources have been discovered?

Most of what I know about the production side of the show comes from Dwan's book.
