Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life

Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life

Күн бұрын

Highlight of this show is Kuldhip Singh, a young medical student originally from India who aspires to a Rock and Roll career. His appearance in this show was so popular, he was asked to return a few shows later (unfortunately I don't have the episode with his return appearance). This episode also marks a change in quiz format, with the couples no longer competing against each other, instead qualifying for a $2,000 bonus question by getting 4 quiz questions correct in a row without missing 2 in a row. The bonus wheel wasn't added till later in the season. This change of format means that from now on, there will be only 2 couples per show instead of 3, which gives Groucho more time to be funny with the contestants before getting bogged down in the quiz segments.
Producer John Guedel appears between the first and second couples to present Groucho with a very appropriate gift. . .
Sorry that the video quality on this one is rougher than usual, but it's a classic episode!
COUPLE #1: Marianne Badger / Jose Luis Flores, 7th grader
COUPLE #2: Kuldip Rae Singh, singing medical student from India / Brenda Daily, student

Actually, it was Mr Singh who messed up. It's explained in the book on You Bet Your Life: apparently he became so enamoured with the fanmail that he never actually went into the studio to record with RCA for long enough that they dropped his contract.

Medical student and would-be singer Kuldip Singh was such a hit with his performance of "A Woman In Love" that he literally was signed overnight to record for RCA Victor. He was also invited back, and appeared on the show, again, seven weeks later on November 15, 1956.

He had a student visa for learning medicine, but after pursuing his music career in America for several years, doing a few other TV shows in Hollywood, he was deported for only having an expired visa. I imagine his sister (who wanted to be an actress) left America earlier on her own accord, since her only credit was You Bet Your Life. It's too bad I can't find more information of them.

Why was "You Bet Your Life" so inconsistent with its game play? It seems that there have been several. One was contestants being asked four questions whose difficulty was based on the money they chose to bet; they would either win that money or have it deducted from the sum they started with. Now, we have contestants who had to answer at least two questions right in a row in order to win at the end a couple of thousand dollars. If they got two wrong in a row, they were out of the game. I think the show, at its beginning, started out with slightly different rules! I don't know of any other game show that ran like this.

The geography question for Kuldhip Singh and Brenda Daily as to the biggest city in Canada (1956) was indeed Montréal. After the Québec provincial government passed language bills (Bill 101) outlawing English in public places amongst other things, drove hundreds of thousands of anglophones and companies westward to Toronto. Toronto has been for 40 years Canada's most populous city and now the 4th biggest city in North America.
@TidoTee
@TidoTee 6 жыл бұрын
Bill 101 was not passed until the late 1990s when Toronto was already the largest city in Canada and had been for more than 20 years. The bill did not outlaw English. It made Quebecois the first language in the province meaning all signs mush display Quebecois first and English second. Government officials were not required to speak both languages as in the rest of Canada.
