This is a particularly funny show, with too many highlights to mention. But definitely don't miss the bit in the quiz section with Betina Consolo starting around @13:35.
Her partner, Angelo, gets confused about states versus capitals, and Groucho tries to throw them a bone with a "make up" question. Groucho knew Angelo could answer it because he'd just said it a moment earlier, but it still doesn't work-- Betina's response when Angelo stumbles is hilarious. And they end up winning anyway!
And then there's Prince Monolulu, who has to be seen to be believed.
COUPLE #1: Peggy Slater / Don Davis, One-man band who's studying forestry
COUPLE #2: Mrs. Betina Consolo, Italian husband-hunter returns, for her 3rd appearance / Angelo Cerra
COUPLE #3: "Prince" Ras Monolulu, international race-track tout / Madeline Dudley

I love this era. The people were polite and simple folk. Just being themselves. I was 12 when this was aired. It was one of my favorite shows. By the by. A thousand dollars in 1957 would be about $9400 today.

@@arcmayAskvanpay I found an entry for Donald R. Davis, a lepidopterist (butterfly specialist) who was born in 1934, and is still alive. If this is the same guy, he was only about 23 years old when this episode appeared. Could it possibly be the same guy? (On second thought, it's probably not him, as this contestant said he went to UCLA and Berkley, while the Donald Davis on Wikipedia attended the University of Kansas and Cornell University. And, on top of that, Don Davis must have been well over 23 when he appeared on this show.) *That said, he still really looked and sounded like Wally Cox!*

What a wonderful glimpse of America in the 1950s, Churchill said: “History with its flickering lamp stumbles along the trail of the past, trying to reconstruct its scenes, to revive its echoes, and kindle with pale gleams the passion of former days."

That's one of the main reasons I love this series. As much of a Groucho fan as I am, he's not always in peak form in these shows. You can tell when the contestants stimulate him to ad lib vs when he's falling back too heavily on the corny prewritten jokes he always had available to him. But it's always fascinating to me to see the parade of ordinary folks they had as contestants over the years, because unlike other game shows, the focus here was on conversation, so you really get a glimpse into 50s and early 60s America that you can't get anywhere else. Thanks for the comment!

Groucho Marx - You Bet Your Life What this conversations also reveals, is that the "ordinary folks" are not that ordinary at all ! ;). Many are *very* interesting, and some are just hilarious! ;D

SuperWinterborn Oh yes, though by "ordinary" I just mean "non-celebrity". The truth is, YBYL contestants were screened very thoroughly, either for their personalities or an interesting background, so they're not exactly "average" people in that respect. .

Seriously? You're really his grandson? What a delight to get a comment from you. I don't really know anything about him beyond what's in the Wikipedia article-- I don't know how old you are, so forgive my asking in ignorance if you ever met him personally/remember him? He was quite a fascinating character-- he was also a mystery guest on an episode of the BBC version of "What's My Line" a few years before this show!

Did you ever notice that two black people always appear together? In other words, they never have a pair of different races talking to Groucho.
@JAY-gl5xd
@JAY-gl5xd 6 ай бұрын
It might be hard to tell because it's black and white, but their are mixed race pairs regularly. People from all over the world. Iran, India, Egypt, Korea... all with the same flirty banter. And I remember an episode in particular, with a caucasian woman and a black boy. The boy even sat on groucho's lap. But you might be right that there haven't been any black/white "couples". Probably because he would been strung up higher than the duck, showing something like that on TV at that time.
