Check out what happens during the wheel spin for the bonus question. Given who the contestant is, it couldn't be a more perfect moment if it was staged (which it wasn't-- this isn't "The $64,000 Question"!)
COUPLE #1: Mayme Maceira, married to a hod carrier / Albert Hibbs, who figured out a system for beating roulette wheels
COUPLE #2: Georgette Holt, who to describe her accent, tells Groucho, "I used to say bahth-room" / Willie Rudnick

Albert Hibbs was a systems designer on Explorer I, the USA's first satellite to orbit the earth in 1958. He was also a spokesman for NASA. He died following heart surgery in 2003 at age 78.

Albert Hibbs also was, for a time in the 1960's, Science Editor for NBC News,. and hosted a children's science series called "Exploring". Supposedly, this appearance led to Hibbs' being hired by NBC News for their Science Editor job, although I think he was based in Burbank.

I can't believe I'm finally seeing this after all these years (first saw it on CBN in the '80s). I did a double take back then when I heard Hibbs mention Chillicothe, Ohio, my hometown. I just read a newspaper column from the time and learned that the day after this episode aired, our local river overflowed its banks, causing a citywide flood that is still talked about today.

Very sorry to learn about the sad loss of Dr. Albert Hibbs. Wish that I could have interviewed him. He is in my forthcoming doctoral dissertation on the history of tv and radio space coverage from 1923 to the present--this will make a nice human interest anecdote to include. Thanks for posting this episode!

Probably not a use--PhD doctoral dissertation--you anticipated when doing the painstaking process of obtaining, converting, and posting these! Thanks also to the NBC NJ warehouse worker and the Groucho Marx grandson and the lucky telephone call that saved these cultural gems from being lost forever.

No one can take Groucho,s place, it's been tried at least twice Bill Cosby and now Jay Leno. At least Jay tries to lead people to the secret word. For example : if the secret word was "beer" Jay would ask the contestant how they like to spend their time, and when they say for example I like to party, and Jay would ask what they like to drink.

On a humorously ironic note, I came to this clip last night from binging Simpsons "Steamed Hams" parodies. Anyone watching this show who has seen a few of those will know what I'm talking about ("No, Mother, it's just the Northern Lights!").

I was born in 1954 so it's like seeing this show for the first time!! lol I have a question though... if the couple wins $1000 in the first round then plays for $2000 from the question after the wheel ..Does the players keep the total amount of $3000 if they win ? Or are they forfeiting the first $1000 for a chance at the $2000??
@jim165670
@jim165670 6 жыл бұрын
My understanding and experience from watching this game version of the program - there were several versions during the shows run - is that you don't keep the $1000 if you win $2000. $2000 was a lot of money in 1954, the same year I was born. February 9th.
