1:36 no, you cannot get a "really long ribbon cable", since HDMI uses twisted pair (similar to Ethernet and many modern cables) to reduce electromagnetic interference. Since your ribbon cable uses straight parallel wiring, it will not self cancel out, leading to the HDMI 1.4 speeds as well as not supporting great lengths. The later shown 2.0/2.1 cables always have a pair of conductors together because of this - they are twisted by necessity (not shown in the picture).

Exactly this, it's why HDMI cables are so thick

fair point, I've seen 1 meter ribbon cables for HDMI usage which is what I was picturing, in my head that's a "really long ribbon cable", not a "really long cable that happens to be ribbon", confusing wording on my part. HDMI is for sure a pain with really long cables, had to get an active directional HDMI cable back in 2016 for my home theatre run which was over 5 meters, man was that a tricky thing to find back then!

Twisting is not the whole story. Twisted pair cables are twisted to help mitigate the effects of external noise, and each pair is twisted at a slightly different rate to minimize crosstalk between adjacent pairs. In unshielded cables, twisting is also the way to achieve controlled impedance for each pair, as it keeps the conductors close together. But twisted pair is not necessary to transmit fast differential signals over long distances. The 2.0/2.1 cables shown in the video are in fact not twisted. They use a coaxial differential structure, also found in SATA cables or PCIe extensions, for example. The two conductors within each pair are evenly spaced and surrounded with a shield that is referenced to ground (or it's just ground). The shield helps solve the same problems as twisting, and the two can be combined for even better results (like in cat 7 Ethernet cables, for example). It's perfectly reasonable to transmit HDMI with a long ribbon cable, as long as it has a reference plane under the differential pair traces (like on a PCB) or, even better, is evenly shielded on both sides. The shielding needs to be even to keep the impedance constant.

2 Fun facs. My 4th monitor today is an IPAD2 screen from a DEAD ipad2. And i use it just like yours, at the bottom/left of my main monitor to show VoiceMeeter (and some other stuff, like ChatGPT, etc... The screen is amazingly sharp and bright but it does not have the touch function. I am using a HDMI driver board for ipads. :) And i am ALSO using those flat cables on it !

Yes! These things are amazing. I used some to build a cyberdeck a while ago; but was only dealing with raspberry pi trash screens and keyboards and stuff so never ran into any issues with bandwidth. I was always amazed at how strong those little flip down connectors are!

ooh yeah raspberry pi projects would be perfect for these, probably a common use case I haven't really noticed. I've got one raspberry project from a few years ago I'm already thinking of modifying with one of these cables to easily adapt to full sized HDMI with minimal weight.

I’ve seen the video, but I’m not sure I get it. The cable thickness seem to be irrelevant for your application? All you need is the smallest angle adapter to avoid ot sticking out on the side. The actual cable could easily be 10 times fatter and still go behind the screen?
@JonMurray
@JonMurray Күн бұрын
He said less than thirty seconds in that he needs the thinnest cable possible to get maximum space on the left hand side.
@DIYtechie
@DIYtechie Күн бұрын
@ But the cable itself wraps around the back? The only thing that matters is how much the angle adapter sticks out on the left side. Judging from the close ups, the ideal solution would be a shorter usb plug.

I get what you mean, and I probably should have done a close up comparing a right angle tip to the modular PCB tip, as you're right, it's the tip that's most important for my specific need, but the term "cable" is interchangeable with the entire thing. It is however, the thinnest option I could find with a right angle bend, given there's no plastic around the tip 🤙

I was about to cry that I'm having difficulties with signal integrity on proper beefy DP cable that has to have to extra ferrite filters on top of built in, but once I saw his screen refused to turn on due to compatibility my butt hurt somewhat let off.

hahaha damn that must be really annoying, I remember having a raspberry PI camera signal fault even after adding ferrite's myself, very frustrating. But yeah this one was funny, simple changed HDMI cables and it worked 🤣

With the Raspberry Pi Monitor, I only need 1080p at 60Hz. So any 1.4 cable should do. Very hard to find a nice, thin, braided HDMI cable that goes with that monitor well. Just need like a meter cable, but everything I've found is plastic and stiff. If anyone has a link to a nice thing 1.4 cable, please post a reply here.

I have considered that as the thin vertical space is PERFECT for it! but since it's a touch screen and I also have knobs on the streamdeck for applications, I feel like it'd be "just because"... unless I can find an extra usage for them like desk LED brightness?

I know you might have seen these over the internet, but I just wanted to share my faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus to me is someone who promised me eternal peace and companionship. He has been by my side and working on my behalf and for those around me for the last 15+ years. This is just to say that Jesus is real and he wants to have a relationship with each and every one of you guys. We don't know when our last day will be, but I wanted to urge you guys to give Jesus a chance. So I close with this: Romans 10:9- If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
