I never get why ppl say g5 should have a drawback it's an awakening. Why should luffy be the only df user with a drawback. g5 is unlike g2 3 and4 in that he can freely control every parts of his body like his brain and heart became rubber. To add my two cents, I do believe that Whitebeard was awakened. Chapter 1030, where Law used his awakened abilities for the first time, is what convinced me. Law's base powers, within a certain radius, affect other people and the environment just like Whitebeard's base powers. When awakened, Law was able to infuse his devil fruit into his weapon which gave him a whole new arsenal to use from. Several times during Marineford, we also saw Whitebeard infuse his devil fruit into his weapon in order to do special attacks. This may just be pattern recognition or coincidence because realistically these are two very different fruits and awakening is not universal but I thought I'd mention what I think is fairly compelling.

Out of anyone in the one piece world luffy might be the most resistant towards vibration attacks because it's rubber so he might just have the trampoline effect where if you get punched by a quake punch it might just stretch him out and bounce him back. Also you're completely forgetting what I said in the comment above how does whitebeard counter luffy's ability to fly and bring down attacks on him from the sky if he can't fly himself. Kaido's flamedragon form was simply his most "badass" looking attack for the finale, but it was a no-brainer that he would lose with it, I think even to him. Oda even had to bring up the "old man" Hyo again, to pretend that fighting without touching would be anything new. I think it’s fair to interpret whitebeard and kaido both understanding the importance of specing into haki more than their at base op devil fruit. Vast majority of their fights are basically over for most people in a few quakes or blast breaths. So them viewing it as more worthy to learn and fine tone their haki capabilities instead of taking the time to awaken already busted fruits

This topic also comes up for the "Pirate King" by the way. That is, invincibility is not really the definition of the PK, such as it is for certain characters. The PK can just defeat all others (and evade etc.). Kaido is definitely awakened and I believe he specifically awakened when he arrived in Wano. His fish fish fruit is based off the Japanese myth where basically a carp transforms into a dragon after it climbs up a waterfall and passes the dragon gate. I think it makes perfect sense from a storytelling standpoint as one of the only ways to enter Wano is by climbing up a waterfall with carps.

I think a good way of simplifying the arguments is as such. Imagine a scenario to where during the battle at Marineford to save ace, we replace Whitebeard with Kaido. I think the vast majority of us can agree that the outcome would be much different, with it being vastly in favor of the pirates just based on how powerful Kaido, to the point where Ace may have been saved. If you can agree that Kaido would perform better than you can do the math and see why currently Luffy beats old Whitebeard.

Kaido didn’t take more damage, Whitebeard had a portion of his face taken in addition to magma fist to the chest while being immensely sick and STILL wasn’t dead. The thing some people don’t get with Haki is this: We learned how Haki works, • Base arment -> invisible armor to protect your body • Ryou -> works like a injection by bypassing the armor of your opponent • ACOC -> Same affect as Ryou but with more damage and extens your invisible armor Therefore regardless how strong you are physically, your Haki power stays the same. Your physically power just enables you to over power your opponent, your Haki damage will be the same but additionally you will have more raw power. That’s what we saw between Luffy vs Doffy. He could over power him, but his Haki wasn’t stronger. Same as Luffy vs Katakuri, Luffy Haki was weaker but he could over power him to nullify the gap. That’s why Luffy could fight in base form against Kaido, since his Haki is the same. When he transformed to G4 Kaido could still overpower him. Same as in G5, Kaido could overpower him but the gap was by a margin.

Realistically, Luffy could've beaten Old Whitebeard even before Wano. Whitebeard is *slow* and has been hurt by attacks far less potent than what we've seen from Gear 4. Gear 4 Luffy would blitz him all day long. Even Sanji and Zoro would beat Old Whitebeard. The scaling of One Piece is way higher than it was back in Marineford. Trying to hold up Old Whitebeard to One Piece's current top tiers is like trying to hold up Six Paths Pain to Sage Madara, or Pain Arc Sage Mode Naruto to Six Paths Sage Mode Naruto.

Not really sure what you mean by "healthy old whitebeard". The Ace flashbacks+ Ace novel confirm that Whitebeard's sickness was already sapping his strength by the time Ace was challenging him to fights and it had weakened him enough that he eventually had to start using to DF powers to fight Ace. He got weaker and weaker and the weeks/months after his clash with Shanks, WB could barely use observation haki, had no shown CoC usage and wasn't using any advanced armament from what we know either. Also Whitebeard himself confirmed on panel that even years prior to Luffy's adventure, him being able to beat Kaido at ALL was questionable.

I think alot of this comes down to when Whitebeard was introduced.. If Haki/Awakening had been a big thing at the time I think we would have a better understanding of his strength at that point.. The fact we don't even know for sure if he had Advanced Haki at the time gives him a severe nerf.. But I'm willing to bet he had the whole lot. On the subject of Awakening that's a whole other bag because what kind of ability would that fruit even have he can already effect the surrounding area with quakes.. This is objectively false. It's not even ambiguous. Luffy still lost decidedly after first awakening Advanced Conqueror's. Then when Luffy was about to lose G4 in round 2, it's obvious his final conqueror's attack wasn't going to end Kaido because Kaido still went on to take much more damage from G5 hits. So no, with only advanced COC, Luffy still would get murked by Kaido in a full 1v1. G5 is the actual toss-up but still leans Kaido since Luffy can't maintain it the entire battle yet.

Gear 5 is not a powerup, Its another trick in his bag, Luffy got stronger when he mastered his conquerer haki though, id put luffy at just above yonko commander level, around Doflamingo He's not beating anyone powerful 1v1(Admiral/Yonko) right now, Tbh Imo I think Oda is rushing it with the bounties. Fans equate high bounty with power but I think their bounties rose mostly due to their increased influence/notoriety from their alliances and beating 2 Yonkos and living to tell about it, and also Luffy devil fruit.

I wish Oda would nip the Kaido is or is not awakened thing. From my understanding it's been argued he is because just like the guards in Impel down with zoan fruits, we're told they're awakened. I've always thought Kaido's ability to switch from his Oni form to beast and hybrid forms. I know Oda never mentioned his hybrid form was his awakening, but I guess because we didn't find out till later that the zoan guards in Impel Down were awakened, and given that Kaido is a Yonko...it wouldnt make sense for underlings like Flamingo boy having an awakening and Kaido not. I think we've seen Big Mom's awakening as well. She's used her soul soul fruit to give a piece of her soul to the things she wants to......and then we saw her use her fruit in the exact opposite way and take other souls to restore her life. I believe that's her awakening. I don't think Oda has to announce an awakening each time, and also I think it helps the story if he doesn't as it forces the reader to make sense of previous events. We didn't know about much or if anything about haki during the marineford war.....yet now we can go back and see how Whitebeard and others were fighting the logias.

Many vice admirals were in fine condition. Garp and Sengoku only got involved with Blackbeard pirates. Now look at how Whitebeard, Doflamingo, Kaidou etc have been fighting before they got defeated. Thats really what it looks like when you give everything. Would you really say it took them everything they had? They lured in the wb pirates to try and defeat as many of them as possible. On Awakening for Kaido and Whitbeard: Whitebeard's Tremor Tremor fruit could likely only impact the ground, as that is where Tremors occur. Awakened WB could Tremor his weapon, the air, and more. I'd say WB was going Awakened from the get-go at Marineford. And I'd go so far as to say that Blackbeard understands Devil Fruits like nobody else, even Vegapunk somehow, and could unleash WB's power from jump Kaido is definitely awakened, as Zoan Hybrids have different/mindless level thought, but that may just be for those who aren't as determined/those without Conqueror's Haki who don't give in to their animal instincts. Kaido's Hybrid form had him drinking and unleashing all HIS baser instincts to just have fun and revel in a fight, with no care to him dying or not. (Though the man already wanted to die, so this is a hard sell)

The fact that kaido thought that the only person that would be able to beat him is joy boy has to show that he was on the levels of prime whitebeard. The time line shows it all. In terms of progression. Whitebeard is older so obviously he was stronger at one point in the story. But that was until kaido eventually grew to his prime. Roger, white beard,garp and prime kaido have to be around that same tier. And Luffy will be the one to surpass them all. Current Luffy is the victor easily
