Thanks so much for your support! I think part of it is I am just not up to the usual KZbin task of overhyping things and being really exciting haha. But that's okay with me, as I'd rather have a channel for people who are interested in accurate, non-sensationalized information anyway--regardless of audience size :)

I've been going back and forth on the olive oil issue. The Esselstyn crowd says avoid oils. Oil damages endothelial cells. However it seems everyone else recommends olive oil, espesially Grundell who recommends drinking a liter a week. (extreme). I'm getting plenty of polyphenals in my diet, but keep reading about the need for healthy fats for brain health. I'm pushing 70 with a family history of dementia. I just want to do whats best for my brain.

You are amazing, Miche. A lot of science based youtube channels give too generic advice and also too "shy advice" whereas guru channels do the opposite of overly specific and overly confident advices that are nonsense. You hit the sweet spot with confidence, accuracy, and specificity. Thank you so much for everything you do. You are literally already changing my life in just 2 weeks!! High carb low fat organic veganism has already been working great for me :) I have so much more energy and I already lost weight. Facialapp also already thinks my face looks younger!!

Telemere length is not the only indicator of Longevity. Essential fatty acids, especially omega-3's are abundant in fish, also play a role in longevity, for instance they have been shown to help heart health, and heart issues are still the number one cause of death if I'm not mistaken, and EPAs decrease all kinds of inflammation in the body which leads to rapid aging. Also, I have not heard her say anything about bone health in any of her videos, and there is a statistic that if an older person falls and breaks a hip for instance, the chances are extremely good that they will be dead within three years! I'm happy that she's making these videos but I feel they may be oversimplified.

I used to be a vegan for about 30 years (before that I was a vegetarian) and ended up with heart problems. I was recommended to drop my carb levels and especially grains. Within a few months my health vastly improved. I've monitored my blood sugar for years with a BSM (I'm not a diabetic) and noticed a huge improvement in health by dropping my carb levels.

Keto advocates say that carbs, even from whole grains, need to be limited, in part so as to lower risk of type 2 diabetes. What does the evidence you are looking at have to say on this question? Some Keto advocates, such as Berg, say high fiber carbs, such as beets, are better than low fiber ones, such as, say, orange juice. In general, the enormous contradictions are disheartening. I suspect the biggest problem is stress and the toxicity of modern food and water. Also, what have you found on fasting?

I think that's the issue with anecdotes--it's easy to mask and confuse the actual statistics with people who have a non-standard experience and are really into talking about it. That's why I go by the hard, unbiased evidence. I have noticed that most vegans spend a LOT of time in the sun on average (e.g., because they love nature), often without suncreen (to avoid chemicals). So I wonder if that's part of why many vegans do seem to age quickly in appearance, but then still live way longer.

Sun ages….sunscreen is necessary if you are an outdoor person. Also genetics as you’ve said play a role. I’ve been told my whole life that I don’t look like I’m in my 50s. I am an outdoor person. I admit I’m not always good about the sunscreen. But if you look at the older members in my family. It’s truly genetic. My family ages more slowly….they don’t wrinkle like some people.

Another excellent video, and much appreciated . I'm a soon-to-be Patreon supporter. One of the questions that I haven't seen answered by "the experts" is regarding low fat diets. My understanding is that fats can be "good" or "bad" with fats from, e.g., nuts and avocados in the former group. So, the question is this, "If a low fat diet is an important aspect of slowing aging/staying healthy, are the good fats still acceptable and if so, in what amounts?" I eat a lot of nuts/seeds and know I am consuming considerable fat, but maybe that's okay? See you at Patreon (where I can ask this question again).
@MichePhD
@MichePhD Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, on both counts! I don't think there's work specifically looking into this question yet, but I think that eating healthy fats that are high in fiber and phytonutrients (and low in saturated fat; like nuts & avocado) have enough clear beneficial effects (e.g., reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, and thereby lessening the known drivers of telomere shortening) that they would likely be helpful for slowing aging too. I think that a low-fat diet's main benefit is largely eliminating saturated fat. And yes these are exactly the type of questions I research and answer over on Patreon!
@rolfmellberg
@rolfmellberg 11 ай бұрын
I became a bit confused about saturated fats. Robert Lustig - who seems me to be competent - says that diary fats are healthy due to anti inflamatorial properties and meat fats too but in a lesser degree?

First, love your podcast Miche! Although not the topic on this video, I really think that a diet depends so much on your goals. For instance, I decided to give up grains (with gluten just to start) to deal with my mild case of psoriasis (been afflicted for 30 plus years). My concern is the lifespan and potential psoriatic arthritis affects from the auto immune disorder. But, I realize it could be a two edged sword. Currently I'm a ovo-pescatarian, eating fish two/three times per week and eggs when I go out for breakfast (a few times a month). I love vegetarians and vegans as I think it is the best diet for most people (and definitely animals/water creatures & the planet) if done properly, But it can be tricky (not a big fan of supplements either). Maybe I will convert someday. But even if you & other vegans/vegetarians don't fully convert me over (and others like me), you have an impact to at least get people to eat more vegetables, fruits and herbs. Love the fact that you also garden. I remember when I grew my first thing (green beans) and it popped up out of the soil in San Jose, California (circa 1996) it was truly magical and somewhat ethereal. If anyone hasn't tried gardening that can do so, I highly suggest it.

Great video, but it would be nice to get more specific about low fat. As far as I'm aware, artificially produced trans fats are really bad, saturated fats are bad, monounsaturated fats are moderately good, omega-6 fats are good, and omega-3 fats are very good (not just talking about telomere length, of course). Thank you Miche, great video, as always. Here are a few questions that your video didn’t discuss that could be important the success of lengthen Telomere using this information. 1. How does sprouting affect the quality or quantity of the protective coating around nuts, seeds, legumes, and grains? 2. Does the coating wash off when revising or soaking beans? 3. How does temperature affect the quality or quanty of the protective coating? For example, Dr Rhonda Patric disclosed in her video that Sulpharphane in leafy greens and their sprouts is destroyed by tempatures above 140 F (leafy greens) and 158 F (Sprouts). 4. Is using whole grains in your foods, like summer wheat grains and barley in your soup, vs whole grain pasta a better choice to get the benefit?

Very interesting video. Your channel is brilliant. I do wonder sometimes how much just enjoying your food, or simple relaxation plays into the benefits of a "Mediterranean Diet". For example an element of the diet like wine or olive oil might not be measurably beneficial. But the overall effect of the beneficial foods, alongside these things like wine, it combines to create an overall benefit that works for longevity.

nice review, just found your channel and it's been enjoyable. one of the links to your studies in the link doesn't work btw, the one that says "Review of dietary components for aging" leads to the front page of the site rather than the study, perhaps the url changed or was moved. i was trying to find out which study you referred to when you said that the Mediterranean diet was compared with a low-fat diet (as a control diet) and they found the opposite of what they expected (that the low-fat diet was better than the Mediterranean diet for telomere length), but i can't seem to find a link to that study, and perhaps that's the link that isn't working, or perhaps not?

The single reference you provide concerning fish/fish oil is behind a paywall. Are there any open source references you can point to that also show a null result regarding fish oil and telomeres? In the meantime - I recommend that you read (and comment on) "Effect of omega-3 fatty acids on the telomere length: A mini meta-analysis of clinical trials" which can be accessed freely through the pubmed website. It is only based on a few studies but the authors conclude by stating: "Although our findings should be interpreted cautiously, this meta-analysis provides preliminary evidence that treatments with ω-3 fatty acids may potentially have some clinical efficacy on telomere maintenance." Many studies were discarded by the authors before they decided which few would be included. Of course anytime that happens, it would have to be verified that no cherry picking occurred to support any potential bias toward a particular outcome. However, based on the cautious nature of their conclusion along with no reported conflicts of interest regarding any of the authors - I take this meta-analysis seriously.

From a physician's point of view, it is much easier to persuade people to adopt a healthier lifestyle if you can direct them to a well established, and popular, diet plan then expect them to break down the various nutrition aspect of foods. An oncologist wants to tell their patients try the Mediterranean diet because it is easier for someone to make the switch if they have a guide. A doctor isn't always interested in why it work only that it works.

I can’t wait until we find out what really works. So far we know that vegetarians don’t live an exceptionally long life and most people who start a vegetarian diet feel so good they quit. Anecdotally I found this: people who are married seem to live longer and these people seem to be mentally fit. They usually eat home cooked meals and drink coffee. Usually they are average weight, so they are not impulsive in meals or in other activity. They’re have higher IQs, have hobbies, stay active, are empathetic and eat meat.

I'm concerned with oxalates. While I love nuts, seeds and leafys, they no longer seem like a viable option. What to do?

As a Spanish woman, I've pretty much been eating the mediterranean diet all my life. I'm of course a big fan of olive oil, that's literaly the one ingredient that would never go missing in my house. The study did probably not consider whether the olive oil that the participants had was exposed to day light or not. The best things in olive oil (apart from its delicious taste) are its antioxidants, which get degraded by UV rays. It's very important to buy only olive oil which is in a dark or fully opaque bottle.

The answers to aging start by finding the reasons and solurions to oxidative stress and glycation . Both of these problems are found in all elderly . Telomere length may be involved . You would be surprised by the common cause and solution for both oxidative stress and excessive glycation .

Other than mechanistic speculation, do you have outcome data from human studies showing fish causal in disease as a result from "pesticides"? Any concerns about pesticides used for plants?

I am impressed with your channel. I use mostly olive oil and I take an Omega 3 supplement. I will not stop cooking with olive oil, do you think it is a good idea to take the Omega 3 supplement?

So many areas to consider: keto diet, great for weight loss but balanced and sustainable? Lectins…the media personality with a large following whose primary focus is not eating foods with lectins. CVD, early diagnosis, causes, prevention, and treatment, best markers.. vldl, APoB. Cancer/ types as for CVD.

this is what i hate about the world of nutrition, there is 1000000 contradicting pieces of information. i dont know what/who to believe but common sense tells me a good rule of thumb is stay closer to primarily vegetables/lean protein (what people ate for 1000s of years) while avoiding anything that's ultraprocessed (or processed even better)

Hello Dr. Miche - Thank you very much for this very useful and informative video. Much appreciated! I had one query. A lot of scientists keep talking about the powerful effects of Fasting or Intermittent Fasting on Telomeres and the aging process (in particular I saw a recent video by Dr. David Sinclair from Harvard, for example). I would appreciate your views on this, ie. is Fasting really that beneficial - and what is its impact on the aging process in relation to Diet Management, for example? Many thanks!

I don't doubt that calorie restriction (what the fasting studies are generally getting at) does seem to help slow aging. However I'm not convinced that it's the fasting itself, as it could be something that fasting just happens to affect. Specifically I've seen studies that fasting/calorie restriction is only helpful when the diet composition is not high fat. It makes me wonder if it's eating low amounts of fat (which coincidentally is achieved as a side effect of calorie restriction/fasting), rather than calorie restriction/fasting per se, that has the benefits. I'm keeping my eye out for studies on that!

I’ve heard a lot of these studies don’t control what the variables actually eat and just what they’re studying is controlled

I think - aside from the laziness - another reason why researchers like to study Mediterranean diet because it is easy to get enough study participants. Who wants to go on a low fat plant based diet? 😢 It took me almost 10 years to switch from Mediterranean to plant based because it was hard to give up all these tasty foods.

Hold on! Olive oil was found to up regulate Sirtuin-6 (maybe also Sirt1) and increase NAD+, thereby potentially lengthening life. They also up regulate DNA repair, and mitochondria health, and may thus help cell membrane health, but not necessarily engthening telomeres.
