After the interview, we formed a friendship with Carmine and would periodically call him - he lived in Rhode Island and we lived in California. Carmine talked about a favorite fig tree in his yard. So we planted a fig tree in his honor - called "Carmine's Fig Tree". I think of him every time I walk past that tree. Thanks for watching.

Living right near a old b17 base in Bury st Edmund's England the 94th bomber group, I love listening to the stories of these brave men who we owe so much to, I have always loved the b17 planes since I was a young boy, I had a friend who lived in a farm cottage right near the old runway and we would regularly find live plane bullets when they ploughed the fields, thank you for the hard work interviewing all the veterans so there stories can live on forever.

I was born In 1952 in Nashville. I remember sitting on my father's lap and listening to war stories, many from the 101 airborne, or from the eighth air force. I love these stories, they remind me of the heros I met. Of course they and I were younger.

Love this stuff. Raised surrounded by CanUK vets - all but one air or front line. Have studied the war with a life-long passion and spent all of the '90s in close contact with many, many vets - all successful evaders or better still for the sake of the tale, the 'would-be evaders' who saw the war from every which way and met or go to know of their helpers via the archives. What an astonishing generation my parents belonged to. My dad was 'RCAF ground crew'(40'45') in England, North Africa and England again . . . he was the one who passed on the high respect for all the young boys he 'gassed-up'.

What a good man he was. He no doubt made his family very proud. I bet he was a good parent and a terrific grand father. His story represents what it was like to immigrate to this country and adopt it, not try to make this country like where they came from. Go bless Carmine and his family.

Some of the mail that my folks exchanged was V-mail, but they didn't like it. There was a limited area to write in, and it took longer to arrive than regular mail. Military personnel were granted the privilege to send first-class mail for free by Congressional act of March 27, 1942. Being a first-class mail piece, V-Mail met the requirements. Beginning on April 1, 1942, they could endorse letters on the upper right-hand corner with the word “FREE” and were supposed to include their name, rank, and designation of service in the left corner. Since Mom was a civilian, I suppose she had to put a stamp on the mail. After my folks died, I found a box full of nearly 600 letters that Mom had received from Pappy during the war years. I transcribed all of them, as well as some other documents that were in the box. Some of the letters were V...-Mail. The three dots and the dash separating the V and Mail are the Morse code for "V" (Victory).

You watch these interviews with members of that generation, so many didn't even graduate high school, yet they speak better than people today with graduate degrees. No "like" every other word,or endless "uhh" or using the word "literally " completely wrong. So glad I was born early enough to have known so many folks from that Era, including my grandparents. May they all rest easy.
