You Can't Buy a Ticket From Catford to Catford Bridge

Why does Catford have two stations? And I discovered that you can't buy a paper ticket between them ... because obviously it's quicker to walk.
Except, you CAN take the train - going the long way round, and if you pay for it on Oyster. But how long does it take? And how much does it cost?
Catford to Catford Bridge is shown as a 'walking route' on the the new London Rail Map, and is also (as you would expect) an official OSI, so you can change between the two stations and not be charged twice - it counts as one journey.

Geoff Marshall I have another video idea! Just down the road from Catford in Bellingham there are two bus stops which are just 80 metres apart from each other. They are called Catford bus garage (BN) and Bellingham Road (BQ) and I believe it's the shortest payable journey in London. You should try it for yourself.

And then a few months ago he spent a whole morning going backwards and forwards from Earl's Court to Kensington Olympia. And before that he went and spent hours going round and round on the trams. At Catford the entrance is at the back of the train. At Nunhead it is an island platform so you can use anywhere but you retrovert so if you arrive at the rear of the first train you end up at the front of the second, & vice-versa. At Lewisham the subway is at the back of the train. At Catford Bridge the exit is at the front of the train. Therefore you have to walk 2 platform lengths.

I found this one really interesting - I guess I just assumed that ticket machines used an algorithm to calculate fares between stations and would always come up with something if there was a network path between the two. Can you buy a ticket that goes part of the way, but still traverses the two lines? (e.g.Catford Bridge to Crofton Park)? Do you think there are any cases like this where there is significant geographic separation between stations with no single ticket available, but where there are possible routes?
@Absolute_Zero7
@Absolute_Zero7 3 жыл бұрын
I believe the way it works is that it assumes both stations are one in the same, basically like an interchange station. As a result, trying to buy a ticket between the two is like asking the system to buy a ticket from Lewisham to Lewisham. You just can't do it.

Well and on the other side you can also go crazy in spending money. I just typed in the Bahn DE system, that I want to go from Hamburg Hbf to Hamburg Dammtor by ICE. ONLY by ICE. You could also use regional trains, suburban trains, Ubahn and the bus and it would mostly be the same travel time (at least with ICE, Regional train, Suburban train, because they use the same tracks/the tracks next to each other). The normal price for a single ticket for the two stations is 3,30 Eur. When you want to go back and forth the stations, you can buy for 6,50 euro a day ticket. But when you want to go all out, you can buy a ticket for 9,40 Euro for the ICE for a trip of 3 minutes! Oh and by the way, when you want to go from Hamburg Hbf to Hamburg Altona via ICE, it literally says "no fares" - but that even one MORE station than just Hbf to Dammtor. (The price for the non-ICE-Train is still the same, 3,30 Euro/single) :D

In the US there’s a situation sorta like this. In the northern section of the North East Corridor (between Providence RI and Boston MA) you can not buy an Amtrak ticket between stations with in that area, as in, southbound (Providence) trains only pick up and northbound (Boston) trains only drop off. This due to an agreement with the MBTA, the state commuter rail in the area to prevent competition of their service along the route. Whyteleafe and Upper Warlingham, or Sanderstead and Purley Oaks you cannot buy tickets between. Coulsdon South and Coulsdon Town as well. Riddlesdown and Purley. East Croydon and West Croydon. Edenbridge and Edenbridge Town.. Probably any pair of stations that National Rail considers to be a walkable interchange would be the same. Not dissimilar to what would be an 'out of station interchange' in the Oyster area. Having just checked there are TWO possible fares from Riddlesdown to Purley - one via East Croydon, the other via Whyteleafe. Even though its walkable!

In Elizabeth NJ there once were two stations just across the street from one another. One was owned by the CRRNJ, the other by PRR. The CRRNJ station operated on a line that ran from Easton PA to Jersey City East-West and the PRR operated on a line that ran from Philadelphia to NYC Southwest-Northeast. At one point in time it was a level railroad crossing, the busiest at the time, until PRR elevated that portion of their line. After the Aldene plan was completed (which redirected all CRRNJ traffic eastbound via a different line onto the PRR line) all stations East of old Aldene were more or less shut down. However one can still see while inside a train stopped at Elizabeth the tower attached to the old CRRNJ station building very close to the modern Elizabeth station.

Scunthorpe to Hull is an interesting one. Just looked on nationalrail and you can buy a ticket. But it would be crazy to take the train. Scunthorpe is south of the river humber and Hull is north. You'd drive over the humber bridge to get between them, journey time of approx 45 minutes. But to do it on the train, you have to go all the way to Doncaster. some 45 miles in the wrong direction, to get another train back east again. Taking up to 2 hours and costing nearly £30 one way for the hassle. For that one, you should take the bus :)

My favourite anomaly is that Clarkston and Williamwood stations in Glasgow are about 15 minutes apart (walking), and you can buy that ticket, but the only interchange point is Glasgow Central. Commuters living between the two have realised that they can buy an Anytime Single (at £3.50) between these stations, which is valid into Glasgow in the morning, break the journey as allowed on this ticket (to go to work), and return after work for less than the cost of an off peak return (£3.60 or £3.70). Nice saving on the £5 Anytime return Scotrail would otherwise charge you to return to the same station you started from. Apparently Scotrail don't like people knowing this though!

Interestingly the exact reverse is true just over the border in Wales...... £2.10 is also the fare for a journey between Severn Tunnel Junction and Caldicot, although due to the topography that is actually a 40 minute walk (2 miles) or a 2 minute train journey. I imagine if it wasn't old diesel units and was electric tram-trains, the journey could be done in 1 minute. £1 per minute; they're about 1200m apart as the crow flies.

Think the same applies in most places where there are two nearby stations on different lines - you can't buy a ticket from Dorking to Dorking Deepdene, or from Dorchester South to Dorchester West. Interestingly, you *can* buy a ticket from Birmingham New Street to Birmingham Moor Street - it advises you to walk to Snow Hill, then take the train from there to Moor Street. New Street to Snow Hill is further than New Street to Moor Street, so before you've even got on the train at Snow Hill you've already taken longer than you would have done walking directly.

There used to be two separate stations on my train journey to Cardiff called Abercynon North and Abercynon South. I don't think they were competing companies but they were only about one minute apart by foot. You could see the one station from the other and you couldn't buy a ticket between them. Secondly, I used to work for NRES in the late 1990s. On the computer systems we used at the time, if you tried to search for routes or tickets on this sort of journey it would crash the computer. They later upgraded the computer software we used though and amusingly if you then tried to search those routes it would tell you to walk.
