After definitely not watching the first three episodes, I feel that Pon no Michi is less so an anime about Mahjong as it is an anime about the joys of having a space for yourself and friends to have fun, and just so happens to have Mahjong as an (admittedly large) engine of making those joys happen. As of now it is as slice of life as an anime can be, and it definitely is made for people who enjoy that genre (of which I am one).

I just want to clarify a thing about Riche's name. While it can be attributed to her background that she might be an ojou-sama (someone rich), It's actually derived from the name of Mahjong game variation that's popular in Japan which is also the variation played in the anime, that is called Riichi Mahjong. Her full name is Hayashi Riche which you can alter a bit into Hayashi Riichi which means fast Riichi, which you can regard as a strong offensive move in the game.

Sangatsu no Lion is popular in the Seinen Sphere of the Anime Fandom not because of Shogi, but because of the characters, and relatable topics such as coming of age, depression/numbness, finding a "family" after losing yours, the slow climb/mentally fighting for a better life and slowly getting happier.. And much, much more. Don't just say 'oh it's just a shogi anime" and dismiss it. While Shogi is prominent, it is only truly used as a vehicle to tell the story - and is actually a minor part or the series.

No it is not illegal to watch this anime, nor is it illegal to watch anime on 'pirated sites', due to the legality of the matter being held solely responsible on the uploader, not the downloader/viewer. As a Viewer of content, you may freely watch pirated content all you want even if people cry about it. Plus there are so many great animes released this season that it's more likely there was just no air time available for this season's anime listings to slot it into any normal viewing times, and the studio is unlikely to settle with getting put at non-prime times. Toonami used to do just this years ago by airing a lot of new content very late at night 9:30 to midnight, and then reruns of old studio content from 12-4am. Which are very odd times. (Or at least the times were somewhere around there but changed whenever seasons changed or new animes were aired.)

I like this show because it does not have a crazy well written story where I have to stay focused in seeing the story hints. This for me is a great show to have in the background for when I am doing some other work. As you mentioned this is a show that pays homage to other mahjong animes like Akagi, the legend of the gambler Tetsuya and Saki. I enjoyed this as an "ok" anime. I just had the ability to have 0 expectations, and not needing too much to enjoy the anime. The events are mostly realistic, so it's a bit like watching an interesting footage compilation from a security camera. You just watch what's going on, and it might be relatively random. A bit like K-ON, although K-ON is clearly much deaper and well made. But the setting in Pon no Michi is cute. The parlor having a kitchen and stuff, and being in private use makes it feel so cozy for me. The girls and their friendship is also cute(with the uninteresting parts of their lives not shown). So, it's like a brain resetting anime. You turn off your brain while watching it, and relax.

I'm genuinely interested in this anime. I've never heard of Mahjong, but curious to learn more about it. It's really cool to me that creators are constantly finding ways to make stories, especially when it surrounds a board game.

There you go. American anime companies are mostly seen as gate keeping trolls that censor what anime they bring in. In this case, unless Mahjong becomes a popular games in the west, there will be more people talking about than actually watching it if this were brought over.

I don't understant... Ok, "Shion no Ou" is quite an obscure anime about Shoji, but a list a reference. But the thing that I understand even less is why not comparing it to Saki (that has more than one season and spinoffs) that is actually about Majong. Ok, talking about Saki is risky for demonetization, but not so risky in the end, and it was also pertinente, given that I spotted a reference to Saki in this anime (the way one character played her tile).

reminds me of the days when I would go to Toonami Jetstream to watch Hikaru no Go. The fact no I found no one to talk about the show with. I understand why this show did not get picked up.

as an avid anime watcher and one that wants to learn to play shogi and mahjong this anime sounds quite interesting.

I mean, I've been interested in learning mahjong for a long time. It's essentially a more complicated poker that has more skill involved than normal poker games. I've looked up tutorials and got lost, I've watched Mahjong anime, but I barely learned about the game (only learning a handful of tricks without actually learning how to play) i fumbled around in yakuza playing mahjong, and I learned key words like "Ron" and "pon", but I never actually learned how to get to that point. Maybe this anome will give me some insite.

We seriously need a open platform for Anime & Manga & Light novels

Define "open". Because, if we take the trouble to play with the licensing rules that operate in the entertainment industry as a whole, it's unlikely that the rights holders of such manga/anime will make their IP available without a considerable goal of financial return just only for the sake of accessibility. That's why I always say that, despite being a grayish ethical medium, scanlators and fandubs care more about niche entertainment than any legalized media outlet.
