I have no idea what he said. So part of the world is always sleeping..and therefore nobody is in control of the world? What? Did I miss something? What I heard makes no sense.
@theEarlofChip
@theEarlofChip Жыл бұрын
@@randomgrinn It's definitely not crystal clear and easy to understand, and I think anyone who says as such probably isn't fully listening to his words, but rather is listening like some people listen to radio preachers. They just pick up on the general theme from what is clearly understandable, and they like how it sounds. It might be easier to understand in the context of his full lecture, but there's something missing here. There's a disconnect between his first dreaming metaphor, why people believe weird things, his assertion of the fact that no one is in control, that the world is dreaming and its future is unfolding like a dream, and the end where he asserts you can choose your level of wakefulness. The main point I take away is that nobody is in control and it's impossible have full control, but you can choose whether to be asleep, awake, or somewhere in between to this reality. It's difficult to live fully in that chaos of reality, and if it serves your life and your growth as person to call upon a higher power, or whatever your practice might be, do it. Just don't get swept away by the illusions and start following conspiracy theories, things that aren't conducive to any sort of personal progress or growth. Idk if those last two sentences are correct, but that's the most sense I can make of it.

A frightening, frightening proposition and a little counter too my own experience. My beliefs mean nothing too anyone but me, however, as a 9 year sober man using 12 step process, things have occurred in my life based on a simple belief and or reliance upon the spirit of the universe or “god” for short and lack of a better word. Things have occurred in my life that are far far beyond human orchestration which also seem to embody a very loving spirit behind it all. Something very personally involved in my life and recovery. Is it nature responding in kind to my thoughts and behaviors? Maybe. Is it simple physics at work? Could be. Is it the loving hand of a creative intelligence? Don’t know. I choose to believe it’s the loving hand of a creative intelligence that not only wants to be involved in my life but desires me as much as I desire it. That what I’m looking for is looking for me too. IDK 🤷‍♂️ but it’s a belief system that affords me some peace and 9 years of sobriety after 35 years of suicidal drink and using. Psychedelics are excluded from drugs I abused because they cannot be abused per se but they are definitely wonderful teachers

@BOB K indeed. I know at this point from Ramana Maharishi’s self inquiry practice and several teachers I’ve had that there is no actual thinker, that thinking is an activity of the mind, not unlike breathing is an activity of the body. It happens of itself. Beyond that “don’t know.” Master Seung Sahn taught “don’t know “ mind as part of his dharma. He was /is my original lineage and one of several current teachers I look too for guidance on the path. I don’t know 🤷‍♂️ but I’ll be damned if I don’t keep looking. I like St Francis “ what you are looking for is, what’s looking.” I, as often as I can remember, turn attention towards what’s looking, towards what’s aware. Who knows bro.. the spiritual journey occurred and there’s no turning back now.

Sometimes when I go to sleep I let the colors in my closed eyes go wild. I feel every fiber and bone in my body. As I feel myself fade away. Sometimes I get this perfect view of my room in immaculate detail. I can't move around I can't see myself but it's like I'm an eye right above my body. It's almost like when you wake up and are falling back asleep you can start having a vivid dream before you are actually back asleep. It's happened in every home I've lived in. I've also had a series of lucid dreams when I was really into exploring consciousness and I'd try and push through the dream realm and into "true reality". I've had no success. Just usually the people in my dream start thinking I'm crazy lol and ask if I need help. 😅 This one time I realized I was walking down a street I don't live in anymore and knew I was dreaming. So I wanted to fall through thr fabric of the dream scape and explore else where and when I let myself fall backwards onto the pavement (in my dream) I fell through the concrete and flipped from the floor upright onto my feet like if my feet where hooked in and my body rotated 360 backwards through the ground . No matter how hard I try I can't break through that realm. It's not consistent the dreams are getting rarer as I get older. Maybe someone else has tried this. I swear dreams are just parallel realitys.

This world is almost a fleeting illusion. There's another world in which we live that the psychedelic world can show us where we are really from. It's an absolutely mental world. We can almost not fathom how absolutely insane it is. But we've been there forever and we all go back there soon enough. It's not heaven or he'll It's way beyond anything like that. It's a vacuum like being trapped in a windowless room of formless plastic of unbelievable colours. When you see it you know you've been there before. Many times. But it's also much more than that. That's just the waiting room. It's scary to think about. But it is what it is. While we're here we must love eachother. We must cherish every moment. Experience everything you can but try not to hurt yourself or others. Love.

@@psilo0419 He is suggesting that because of the fact that, humanity as a whole collective is partially awake and partially asleep (or aware of reality and unaware of reality). Then as a result we get a Hodge podge of diverse ideas and beliefs. But there is not one unified theory that ties it all together. It's more like semi organised chaos. And despite all the best efforts of the conspiracy theorists, the red pill movement, and the so called truthers. Not one of them can prove deffinetively that anyone group is in full control of us. (The masons, the Jesuits, the World economic forum, the illuminatti etc). It cannot be proved either way. And the fact of the matter is, that nobody is in full control. As it cannot be controlled. It's impossible to control chaos. Just like a dream cannot be fully controlled. And life is more like a dream. So the trick is, to accept all of this. Drop the paranoia, and learn to control thyself. That's what Terrance is suggesting in this video.

@@DigitalBard1 this is still confusing, but worded much better than Mckenna did, so thank you. What I can glean from what you're saying here is that half the world is aware of reality, and the other half isn't. I wish he could've just said that. Lol.This still sounds off to me because I highly doubt anyone knows anything about reality. It's all perception. That's why a Christian and a scientist can look at pictures from the Hubble Telescope and both see completely different things: one sees the work of God, the other sees the work of the big bang. But neither of them are right. This belief/understanding of mine forms a barrier that is making it hard for anything this video is saying to get through. If he really is saying that half the world is aware of reality, I’m sorry but I can't believe that. As far as life being more like a dream, I do believe and understand that. Everything is perception. With a different perception comes a completely different reality. Thank you for trying to help though.

I have two worlds - my "waking" life and my "dreaming" life - and each to me is as profound as the other. I'm either cursed or blessed to dream heavily. I always dream when I sleep. I fear a time when I confuse my dreams with reality. I have come close to this. Very close. I have times I recall where I'm not actually sure events I remember were real or dreamed - possibly a combination. I don't know. I have many recurring dreams, recognised spaces, entire worlds. I chase the lucid dream - I've come so close to control, but always awake before I can grasp it. It escapes me, in reach, moving out of reach - gone - and I am awake. I spend a great deal of time sleeping, I always have, from early childhood. I consider 8 hours as the minimum. I fear people who say they don't dream. Who say "When I sleep, I never dream." To me, that suggests emptiness, thoughtlessness, lack of empathy. Perhaps these people do dream, but forget. I also forget some details of some dreams, but have memories of dreams from childhood that are equally as strong and binding as my waking memories. To me, my dreamscape is another world I inhabit. It is as important to me as the waking world and always will be. There have been times in my life where I've longed to escape the waking world and inhabit my dreams instead. I am fortunate, because to date, I have had no cataclysmic life experience that makes me fear that dream world. I have had my share of nightmares, terrible nightmares. I have experienced many dreams which could be compared to the movie "inception" - not in direct context to that, but rather that I've fallen asleep in a dream and ended in another and then another. I have gone 3 levels deep into those states. I consider these nightmares. In every case, I've had to awake from one into the dream before it and fight my way back to the waking state. "Am I still dreaming?" - I pinch my arm. "I don't appear to be."

I feel very similar to this. I have vivid dreams most every night and remember ones from childhood just as you describe. When I talk and tell people about them they show little interest but to me it's as you describe a 2nd world which I live in and I am describing details of another life but people just have no interest. I can understand why obviously because they are not real events but to me they have meaning I just don't know what. Last night I dreamt that I was in Iran with 3 friends and one of them had a heart attack and the other 2 friends quickly made a device that shocked him back to life and then we were walking the streets of Tehran and we bumped into a couple of priests and asked them what time is mass on Easter Sunday. The dream was so vivid and the streets of Tehran seemed so beautiful. Anyway I don't know why I wrote all this I just really enjoyed and emphasised with your post and felt like replying.

One of my favorite hobbies is looking up the definition of words. Instead of looking for teachers to pass on some wisdom in hopes of finding a nugget that applies to me, a word will pop into my head and I’ll look it up, look at synonyms and antonyms, the root of where the words came from, etc. and I’ve learnt more that way in such a short amount of time than I ever could listening to anyone. Anyway, in that journey of learning one of the first things I realized is that it’s literally impossible to be awake all the time, people talk about an “awakening” and “more people are waking up every day”, but in my frame of mind it’s like, yeah no shit, people wake up every morning. If you don’t go back to sleep, somethings wrong with you.

The underlying question is really about: Can I first see fully the affects of psychological hypnosis which is endemic in my particular mind and more importantly the collective consciousness of mankind? Having seen it totally, insight acts to end its pervasive influence by the mysterious intelligence of ‘INACTION’.

Inaction as in Zen Buddhism and Taoism. By not doing one can see that you do. So what’s all the action and doing about to solve world hunger, save the planet, stop global warming, prevent homelessness, stopping greed and corruption, the war on drugs, poverty, etc…..??? We can’t even save ourselves!

All these projections into the 'world'. I'm reminded of what I heard Sam Harris discuss. He points out that there isn't another thinking part of the mind that determines our next thought, our next memory. So, without making statements about the world at large, we can realize that there is no one in control of the stream of events within each individual mind.

@@psilo0419 @Joshua Hopper he discusses how consciousness interfacea with the duality of reality. ie: mental limitations, dichotomous biases, seeking to make sense of things by attaching to unusual ideas, etc. It's fascinatingly more applicable today than it was when he spoke it - he highlights how access to information through technology has caused us as a collective to feel lost (grasping at our imagination and calling it reality) as we become unable to anchor our minds in a cominality of understanding (on what reality actually is). Our frame of reference historically was much more narrow than it is now - with social structures (such as organised religion, for example) widely undisputed and thus available to us as a means of rationalising ourselves into feeling safe. The fact of reality is much less polarised than what we seem to be comfortable with - as with the yin-yang symbol, and as with the indeterminate nature of the collective sleep/wake cycle, reality seems to be more of a rhythm than it is a "true or false" dichotomy. Continuing with the metaphor - if sleep is "false" and awake is "true", is it possible for the entirety of the human collective to all be "true" at the same time? To summarise, basically - reality is subjective and because we cannot seem to make sense of any of it, we attach to ideas which make us feel secure and feel like we know what's going on, and we're now exposed to so many incongruent ideas that it's starting to show that no one actually knows what's really going on!

I learned about the hyppy state by falling asleep one time while focusing on a stuffed gray alien head toy filling in a hole I punched in my wall. I fell half asleep with my eyes open and had some profound hallucinations. From that point forward all I had to do to instigate sleep paralysis and the hyppy state was simply focus on a single point with my eyes open, try not to blink too often, and make an effort to not let the eyes jitter. After a few minutes I'll see a hallucination of a 'radar sweep' going around and around, without fail, every time. At that point I know where I'm going. That's what I thought he meant when he said 'while sleeping, watch'. While falling asleep, try to keep your eyes open.

@Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeow
@Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeow 2 жыл бұрын
@@jackbeckett2838 i know what you mean but you drifted too far. we are not there yet and neither was the context. also this is from the Buddhist perspective where one realizes there was never a Self. But, from Hinduism perspective, atman, (Sanskrit: “self,” “breath”) one of the most basic concepts in Hinduism we see that the universal self is identical with the eternal core of the personality and that after death either transmigrates to a new life or attains release (moksha) from the bonds of existence. So there is no chooser as you say when we look at if from Buddhism lenses of various different schools it has. From Hinduism perspective, I have explained. From Christianity, in the conservative evangelical Christian interpretation, only those who are born again receive a "new spirit" so there's the repent thing and what not. And most New Age literature defines the Higher self as an extension of the self to a godlike state. This Higher Self is essentially an extension of the worldly self. With this perspective, New Age text teaches that in exercising your relationship with the higher self, you will gain the ability to manifest your desired future before you. In other words, the self creates its own reality when in union with the Higher Self. However what I mean has nothing to do with religions as you pointed out Buddhism perspective. I merely mentioned that in life in this human journey where you play the game of life, have a wife or husband, kids, job, hobbies, fight, win or lose, play, laugh cry, do scuba diving etc, in this game of life you can always choose.

@@Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeow It appears to me that everything we are seems to be a result of nature/nurture and we 'choose' based on primarily two things, impulse and logic. When they oppose each other the stronger wins. Our impulses are governed by nature/nurture into and our logic by what we have learnt. The supposed choice to do things such as meditate, become a better person or control impulses are again governed by impulses themselves and logic, things we have no real control over. If we decide to learn more to update our logic it was dictated by the impulse that came before we took ownership of it and said "I have chosen to learn this topic" etc. Looking at it this way it seems everything is just 'happening'. Yet I can't shake the feeling that there's more to it than that. The joys of duality.

Stop trying entirely and just be as we are, the good, bad and ugly? What if it manifests as self-destructiveness? I get that it's intuitive but when that intuition is absent, can we say there is nothing we can do?

If you want to, you can keep narrowing it down. That's what the "neti neti" process is. Eventually you'l get down to this "qualityless observer". Since it doesn't have any qualities, it's exactly the same for each of us. So it really isn't new age mumbo jumbo to say "we are all one" or whatever
