You didn't know about this DECK PLANKING method for model ship

Planking and caulking the deck.
When the sealant dries it basically becomes rubber and it completely seals the deck. This will improves the RC performance of the model ship you are building. I find this method to be great for any kind of model ship, I may use this method again for other static model ships. Clearly if the scale is too little then this won't work, I wouldn't go below 1/48 scale. Also because you should use nails around 0,5mm diameter or even smaller, and at this point it will be hard to make the sikaflex penetrate between planks. In this case as you could see from the video the nails are around 1mm, which is in scale with the rest of the model.
This method is also used for caulking real ships and yacht nowadays =)

Yes that would be the best use case. I don’t know if I would have used it for the Dorade though. You need pretty big scale models for doing so

this is the exact look I want for my newly aquired robbe atlantis kit. Question: will tung oil work ok with sikaflex? Also, the hull in my model is abs, so have to figure out a way to work with the abs and nails somehow :/ but this looks absolutelly gorgeous :)

Looks great!! I doubt that I would do that with the actual Amati Fifie kit as that supplied deck planking is only about 1.5mm thick. Oh and which Sika product was used as they many

Hi JD with 1,5m thickness I think is double too. The sika is liquid so it penetrates easily. In the video description you can find all the links :)

What is the black caulk product name between deck planking? Working a 5' sailboat and next step is decking/finish.

Hi @Colin I used the straw oil to give a bit more saturation to the wood. It is a natural finish, you can see how apply it at minutes 05:21. Alternatives are: danish oil or tung oil
