What you have highlighted here is what was lost when strategy development practice was lost with digital and agile transformation and innovation and the obsession with build first and retrofit results later. Product oriented teams lurch from one QBR to the next getting caught in the build trap. It’s really important that someone from inside product management is recognising the chasm between roadmap and vision and calling for bringing this systematic thinking back into play. Nicely done.

Great talk mate. The stuff you describe marries so nicely with the techniques I use and teach, particularly capability slicing, which is a way of exploring the customer problem space in our (company) domain/industry by creating a map of increasingly specific options of customer segment, capability (something the customer wants to be able to do in their life that they can't currently) and channel (where and how we provide the capability). For me, capability slicing s the missing piece between opportunities and solutions, a la Teresa Torres. Once we have mapped our customer problem landscape, we can then draw a virtual boundary somewhere in that landscape (around particular customer, job and channel options) to reflect the choices which are relevant (inside the boundary) and not relevant (outside the boundary) given our product strategy. We can then use JIT implementation mapping/slicing to narrow down on specific product solution choices. As you say, prioritisation becomes a lot simpler once we have a narrow set of options guided by our strategy.
