Great video. Often we find Organisations treating roadmap as their strategy. I like the way you connect Strategy to “framework to make product choices”

Thanks! 🙏 Glad it resonated and agreed. Many organisations mistake goal setting and the roadmap for strategy. Both common causes for what Richard Rumelt calls “bad strategy” in his book Good Strategy Bad Strategy.

Just had a good conversation and wanted to add some additional concepts: John Cutler did a great post the other day on misinterpreting the 3 horizon model (read and watch his short clip on Linkedin here www.linkedin.com/posts/johnpcutler_one-of-the-confusing-things-about-infographics-activity-7199841773618159616-O05R?). The main point that John makes is that most people interpret the three horizons model incorrectly. It's not sequential, You should be doing something on all 3 horizons at the same time and over time the things in the far horizons 'graduate' to the near horizons. This is exactly what I'm talking about here with explore vs exploit. The near term horizons = exploit. And the far horizons = explore. Over time the things that you explore will graduate into exploit. It's not an either or and why companies must spend time doing both. On this note, I didn't have the time to go deep into this during the webinar but for those interested - this model can also be an input into determining what allocation you might have between explore vs exploit. A textbook product portfolio management answer would tell you to follow the 70/20/10 rule. Which means allocating 70% to Horizon 1, 20% to Horizon 2, and 10% to Horizon 3. So if you were to follow this you may decide to use 10% investment into explore activities. I know not too many read comments but wanted to throw this additional narrative in here - I might do a future video/post on some of the more advanced topics here like the 3 horizons model, product portfolio management and the 70/20/10 rule - if you are reading this, let me know if that's something that might interest you! :)

I appreciate how straightforward the video was and how well explained each of the ideas were, so thanks and kudos. I think any Scrum Master or Product Owner/Manager can see which backlog framework fits his/hers needs, as well as what strategy.

I suppose you can sell them once based on perception, but key differences will come out when they start using it.
@productpathways
@productpathways Ай бұрын
Correct. And then the next question becomes are the differences important enough compared to the perception to make the person switch? e.g. I'm sure there are plenty of bags better than Louis Vitton but not enough against the perception (and intangible value they get from being associated with the brand) to make them switch. Similar a Bugatti Chiron (one of the most expensive cars) doesn't have cup holders! The same goes for plenty of everyday cars like BMW and Merc, people love to point out that they are missing features that are on cars less than half the price but it's not significant enough to make the switch. A great model to illustrate this is the BJ Fogg behavioural model. If you're interested, I did a video talking about the model and how you can apply it this exact scenario and who people don't switch even when the product isn't as good: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGqnaYmpiN2qmqs

What tool would you recommend for user story mapping for a large complex business?
@productpathways
@productpathways 2 ай бұрын
Good question. Virtual whiteboard tools are great (Miro, Mural, etc) but there’s other tools like if you’re using Jira, there’s plugins for it like Easy Agile and Whiteboards io used both and they’re good. Given you say it’s a large complex business I’d lean towards more flexibility and therefore whiteboard tools like Miro, Mural, Lucidcharts, etc. Hope that helps!

What you have highlighted here is what was lost when strategy development practice was lost with digital and agile transformation and innovation and the obsession with build first and retrofit results later. Product oriented teams lurch from one QBR to the next getting caught in the build trap. It’s really important that someone from inside product management is recognising the chasm between roadmap and vision and calling for bringing this systematic thinking back into play. Nicely done.

the key to strategy is the alignment component - without alignment, it isn't a strategy just an academic statement - alignment let's you realise the strategy and means you market the thing you are building to the people you want to address and have a price that is attractive to those people. Don't have alignment...you try to sell something you aren't building, to people that don't want it at a price they are not interested in.
@productpathways

Well put! It’s really just a pipe dream if you don’t have alignment.
