You Don't Need Any Antivirus Protection ?
According to some people, you don't any form of antivirus software on your computer, including Windows Defender. What sort of bad advise is this? I have seen a lot of people making this kind of statement and its pure madness. Yes, you need some form of Antivirus protection on your computer, whether its Windows Defender or some 3rd party software like ESET, Bitdefender or Kaspersky. Free or Paid.

I have always used Norton. There continues to be much debate over which one is best, but I find that Norton is consistently better than the others available. I also subscribe to their lifelock subscription. As someone whose data was compromised in the past, it is a great tool to not only protect your valuable info, but a great tool to mitigate any damages when your data is compromised. I agree that it is the height of hubris to think that no protection is needed. Worst case scenario is to just stick with the protection that comes with Windows; better that than no protection at all. I often receive computers that has no protection, or protection that expired long ago. That, and the pathetic old wives tale that Apple products are immune to malware.

If you are completely offline and only install your software from trusted local sources and from physical media (remember those halcyon days?) then an antivirus program would possibly be superfluous. If you are still running a Sinclair ZX Spectrum or a BBC Micro or a Commodore 64 then antivirus software is probably useless. However, even a disconnected Amiga, Atari ST, or PC was vulnerable to boot sector viruses so an antivirus was recommended. So ... basically I agree with you Brian, antivirus software is a necessity these days.

It's surprising that some people still believe that antivirus and malware blockers are unnecessary in today's world of technology. All it takes is for someone to take popular software, add a key logger to it, and repackage it on the internet. When you download it, the key registering device will give hackers access to all your information without you even realizing it. It's important to have antivirus and malware programs installed to protect yourself from these threats.

Some years ago I had an argument with my bro-in-law who said AV was a waste of money. Everytime I received an e-mail from him my Norton (I do not believe in "free" AV software) would warn me of a virus/malware. When his boss gave him a written warning about his homework was infecting company computers he only then woke up to the fact that his computer was "sick"......

I have used AV software in the past. All it ever did was flag false positives, which took time to put on an ignore list, or if it did find a genuine infection, it couldn't remove it and it was necessary to Google a manual fix. The only time I got an infection was due to installing compromised software. So if you're careful about the software you install eg install it in a VM first and keep your browser up-to-date, you've certainly gone a long way to keeping safe.

I have a big issue with AV Test. For a very long time I have distantly noticed - When someone leaves a link for a specific product, it will het a great review, this also happens with a search there for a specific product. Although when one searches by year etc for their rankings - The story is far from the same. Back in the day there were at least 2 independent Security Software Companies that were first class. I no longer remember their names although I believe one was in the US and the other was in England. There may gave been a third one also. This back. back to 05 +. I stand by my claim as mentioned.

Browser has a sandbox so unless there is some sort of hole you can’t get infected. (Just patch it regularly) Usually the problem is downloading stuff which execute on your own computer. You do have to be a bit tech savvy. I run windows from 1995 to 2010 and since about 1999 I don’t have any antivirus installe because thunderbyte was gone and the rest bogs down the computer. I only had one instance where I caught a virus because I wasn’t careful: from a usb stick. Windows patched that and I always scan a disk using Trend micro housecall afterward. Since 2010 I switched to mac and no worries since. I do have a software program on mac that warns me if a program starts to encrypt files extensively. I have to manually allows it every time some program starts encrypting. That is a safe guard to ransomware.

You absolutely need AV on any device, possibly including Linux and BSD desktop and server systems. I use common sense and antivirus to stop myself from getting any nasty form of malware. I use Linux, so I'm a little less vulnerable to that sort of stuff, but I still apply common sense to downloading things, and I always go with a reputable ad blocker for my browser. I even use antivirus on my Chromebook! That tells you how far I go to keep myself safe. Better to be safe than sorry 👍 Thanks for making a great video once again. Keep up the fabulous work! I'd say if you're either a security professional or expert then sure you probably don't, as long as you're competent enough and know what to and what not to click on. However not everyone is like this they'll easily get infected by just clicking on anything, and everything not everyone is in IT, so its pretty bad advice to give someone that isn't as competent, they are better off with an anti-virus than you are because they don't know wtf to look out for.

actually they are right, you do not need antivirus software (even windows defender) but windows defender is build in to windows 11 so it will enabled by default. this means windows defender is securing your device anyways. however, even without windows defender. the reason is this, many browsers including microsoft edge does a browser based build in tools such as microsoft edge smart screen which prevent you entering suspicious malware software. i am not sure about other browsers though. but just for safety, letting windows defender on is good too i do not any antivirus on my computer except the build in windows defender.

Love your videos but must disagree. If the website gets infected their antivirus didn’t help did it? Antivirus only detects what it knows about. But the reason for not wanting an antivirus really has little to do with the protection side against viruses so much as the man in the middle filtering private information, antivirus companies. What better way for big brother to scan all your personal information? This is just my opinion but there’s too much effort being placed lately to invade our privacy. It’s enough to want to toss out devices altogether. Again love your videos, I just don’t think the reasoning behind the statement has been represented correctly.

I haven't installed an antivirus since Windows 7. YOU DONT NEED AN ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE! But I have never seen a PC running fine without Defender! I would never uninstall it. The thought has never occurred to me. I don't even know how it would be done. The best protection is common sense. An antivirus does NOT protect you from viruses. I have seen Pcs with 2 3rd party antivirus programs that still has viruses. There is no guarantee that you will never catch one. The worse thing is many antivirus programs are misbehaving the same as viruses. And some exploits are not even detected as viruses, no matter what you use. Downloading stuff is like opening your front door to strangers. Some times they bring pizza, sometimes they have a gun. People who don't use an antivirus are not idiots. But it is important to say that they are measuring their risks. People who don't know what they are doing obviously need a safety net, but doesn't mean they are going to land safely in it. Obviously this channel has all kinds of viewers and is meant to give helpful advices. Removing all protection is obviously not a good advice. But that doesn't change the fact that you don't NEED a 3rd party antivirus. What bugs me more is that even people from my family use their browsers without any adblockers and suffer daily just as much as If they had a virus on their device. Its not like I didn't try to explain. Some people will understand and most just won't. And they will keep all telemetry on, all the antivirus protection on and all the ads on. Not everyone wants to live like that. Some of us like to surf the web and are not afraid of the water.

As an IT employee, I never used one, when it comes to my clients and other less tech-savvy people, Windows Defender has gotten good enough for a "free" antivirus, but I never run any EXE I dont trust, and barely download anything I dont need, I grew using single core PCs and low ram systems, and installing any antivirus meant a humongous performance hit, what brought me to this video is my doubts about this technique being still valid, in the past 11 years, not a single one of my machines have gotten infected (not even in WannaCry and Petya days), and when in doubt I always run bootable offline antiviruses, always coming clean in the results, if I don't know a file or attachment I dont mess with it in my host, sandboxes and VMs always helped me test files, and virustotal of course, still I'm growing concerned And for Windows Defender the LTSC branch which is what I use allows you to disable it in GPO in audit mode, as long as you dont update it this can completely disable it while still retaining the Windows Security app functionality, after updating Windows defender still remains disabled but I could still choose to enable it (it being a choice I couldnt back off as some malware abused this capability to infect machines)

I might expand on the topic of needing AV. You dont need AV if you are tech savy, and you know what you are doing on the internet. Seriously guys, wtf? I have windows defender just in case as sometimes im opening asian sites, but if not for that i would disable it. The !ONLY! threat I got detected for more than a year was a false positive from the cheat engine... (because its in nature like a virus, modifies memory) If you dont know computers and internet, then you might want the AV, but if you know it then it only slows down your PC - thats the full story and thats the truth. Im reading the comments and I see examples like "someone just need to repack a program and you are done". Like, BRO where are you downloading stuff... Legitimate sites scan files on their own and if it contains a virus they wont allow it to be posted. Or even worse, are you downloading random .exe from a random person from the internet? Its REALLY difficult to get a virus when you know what you are doing nowadays - claiming otherwise is just stating you dont know what you are doing. And I love conspiracy theorists that will call me a hacker lol.

This bad advice is everywhere it's so painful to read. A lot justify it with "just don't click/download anything stupid" yet, most people who are infected this route are misled or impersonated into believing the malicious content is trusted. Then there's the issue of complacency, where people assume since they haven't run into any noticeable problems, that means what they're doing is working. The obvious fallacy here is that you wouldn't so long as the malware is running as intended. Then there's browser exploits that don't need your interaction, malicious adscripting...

It was not a virus, but it just would periodically popup as a script like something PowerShell might run and you had to click the dialog button to dismiss it, very annoying. No AV program detected it as malware or PUP but there it was...I finally figured out it was from a dodgy site I was visiting. Now I make sure to turn on that feature in browsers to "warn of suspect sites" and haven't had the same problem yet.

I used to use free Bitdefender, but I'm sticking with Defender and Malwarebytes. I also like uBlock origin on my browsers to protect from malvertizing. I spend about 33% of my time on Windows these days, (I wish Adobe made Lightroom for Linux.) But mostly I feel safer on Unix based OS's, I dislike Windows 11, so I mostly use Windows 10. I personally would avoid Kaspersky, just because no-one should trust anything from Russia these days IMHO.

I haven't used windows defender or an anti-virus for 18 years on windows 7 and then 10. Windows defender or an anti-virus slows down a PC. I've gotten viruses but much less than when I used windows defender or an anti-virus. How do u know when you get a virus? Your PC doesn't work correctly. What happens if a PC gets ransomware, a virus or malware? Make a backup image with backup software like StorageCraft ShadowProtect Desktop or Acronis. It takes 10 minutes to restore a backup. It usually takes hours to remove ransomware, a virus or malware with anti-virus software.

I'm one of those people that doesn't used an AV at all on my Personal Desktop PC (Windows 11 Custom Build) for 2 years and counting. As long as you know what you're doing on your system, you have common sense and awareness. Yeah! they can call us idiot, crazy silly people, etc; for me, I don't care. If you're just a normal user, better get an AV especially if you're a windows user and if you're a linux user no need for this AV at all.

The best anti virus is educating yourself. Not trying to rely on anti virus software to make up for your ignorance. There are limits to what anti virus is capable of. Besides places like virus total can check common malware and viruses anyway.

AV is designed for "most people". A very sophisticated user can do things like run a virtual machine and everyday have a new instance of their computer, so even if it's encrypted at worse you only lose one day's work. But that's not the average. Me? I use what comes free with Windows.

Probably the person who said you don't need an antivirus is a scammer! And your so right Britech you could even get malware, ransomwar,e or a virus just going to what ever social media platform you frequent. Even Facebook uses trend micro! But if they got hacked how would the user know until they tried to login an that attempt to login may be all it took to get ransomwared!
