The problem with these entrepreneur, mindset, hustle, passive income influencers is that they still believe “working hard” is the key to becoming a millionaire. And if you fail, you haven’t worked hard enough or your mindset is wrong. I wonder when they’re going to realize the nuances in the path to becoming wealthy. Yes hard work can make you rich, but it’s no a guarantee and most people haven’t gotten rich through hard work. Our understanding of hard work is warped to begin with

To be a millionaire you have to work smarter, not harder. Heck, many are actually throat cutting criminals evading taxes and other stuff, I see stuff like that come to light all the time. Notorious example is the FTX situation.

I've done both. Co-founded a startup last year and was the CPO (Chief Production Officer). We made that role up because it was a creative startup based around musicians and live-streaming. I was the only musician on the team and also a filmmaker. After pitching for months and completing an accelerator program, we successfully raised $1.5M from investors and were able to pay ourselves six-figure salaries. Sounds great, but it was truly a 24/7 job. I spent most of my nights at concerts and working with venue owners, which is also not as fun as it sounds. Had to hire people as well - I never want to be anyone's manager ever again, it was a nightmare. My co-founder stabbed me in the back and kicked me out because he owns most of the shares (the original creator of the company). I had nothing and have spent most of this year digging myself out of a massive debt hole. I work from home in a fully-remote 9-5 now. Never been happier. When people ask me about startups I don't kill their dream but I do share my experience honestly.

I want to quit my job, very toxic environment, entrepreneurship doesn't sound like it'll be for me and I would love working for a company remotely, having a stable paycheck, I'm okay with being an employee, my dream isn't Instagram rich, is just not to struggle and being able to be there and present for my family, having a long commute steals up to 15-20 hours a week and in public transportation it's longer, I'm just exhausted. This is what I expected. I used to buy into "Quit 9 to 5 and become an entrepreneur and own your time" of course, these videos never ever mention the fact that owning your business is a 24/7 experience. You're not gonna be on a private jet, answering emails and sipping wine. You're gonna be stressed

Yep. You probably do need to be an entrepreneur if you want to be fabulously, insanely wealthy (i.e., several homes, luxury cars, private planes, yachts, that level of wealth). But if you "just" want to be rich, you do not. Make money. Spend less than you make. Invest the difference. Do that consistently for 10+ years, and you'll be amazed what you can accomplish. Starting your own business has problems of its own: You have to hire people and pay them, you'll be working at least 60 hours a week (that can be up to 100 during the first year, so much for making your own hours), you have to answer to more people, customers, employees, the government, supply chain people, etc. It's the classic out of the frying pan into the fire situation.

I’m happy with my traditional career! My company has a culture that aligns with me and have a great boss. Our hard work is recognized and we are well compensated, have great benefits, and have flexibility with our schedules. Im a big believer in leading versus managing. It’s a completely different story if you don’t love your company and don’t have a good boss and dread work each day (I’ve been there too!). I’m completely okay not being rich, but have lived comfortably making 6-figures for a while (and getting raises and every year) and that’s plenty for me. Most of the time I have a good work/life balance. These days I actually value my days off more than raises. I’m really thankful for stability and job security too. Being an entrepreneur is awesome, but traditional careers can be awesome too!

Our kid selves were incredibly stupid and knew nothing about life. Childhood dreams are just that. And that coming from someone who wanted their current role since preschool, but is definitely disillusioned by how society works. I still enjoy my job, but there's a bunch of boring tasks and emergencies that have me wishing for a de-growth future. Plus, kids know nothing about adult happiness -they haven't experienced grief, loss, failure, existential crisis, they can't even phathom the amount of compromise required just to stay alive.

I grew up with parents who were very much into personal development and personal finances and they both became entrepreneurs. As I got older, I watched them grow with their business and make their wildest dreams come true. They always taught me how I can do that myself one day. And even though they did tell me "it's ok if you just want a 9 to 5, we support you in anything you do" I always felt like I was wasting my potential by not starting my own business like they did. Thank you for another very useful video! So true! Entrepreneurship is not the only path. I have many good friends and family members who worked normal jobs, but were frugal, and retired in their late 30s or early 40s with plenty of money. Some companies even match your 401k, which is super nice. Plus, the larger companies often offer better benefits, sometimes even a gym, a cafeteria, health insurance, life insurance, workers compensation, etc.

Depending on the job, it also grants you a level of access that wouldn't be possible as an entrepreneur who just started. I'm extremely fortunate to work in a position at a company with a level of access to resources that would be outright impossible for an entrepreneur to get. I want to work for myself as an artist, fully knowing I will make less money than if I worked a 9-5. But I’ve worked 9-5s and it’s just an impossible situation for me. I have way too much anxiety, just having a supervisor at all makes me feel like I’m already failing. I get more and more depressed and exhausted every day, my productivity goes down and down, I never go above and beyond, I’m usually late on my projects, and then I get mediocre reviews. If I stayed in that environment, I’d be too exhausted and depressed to do anything other than wake up, work, and go back to sleep. I’d never have energy to meet a partner, have a family, spend time with that family, or do anything else. I’d never get a promotion and I’d get the bare minimum raises. So for me striving for self-employment is not to get rich, it’s to get happy.

OMG, this is my situation to a 'T'. All of what you said is happening to me, plus a soul-crushing commute Monday to Friday. Some of us are just not cut out for the daily 9 to 5 office life. I have tried to do it for years and all it has done is left me mentally and physically exhausted, full of anxiety and self-doubt. Personally I don't look for more hours (as long as you make enough to live). I learned that lesson the hard way in fast food. I really appreciate your much more realistic view of things. I have a full-time job and do film making on the side. It's incredibly hard, but it's made even harder when other people get involved who have been told to "quit their jobs" and expect a guy like me to pay them 50 thousand dollars per film. It's just not realistic and it's harming our economy. An actor in an independent small film might make $500 in reality. A director? Maybe $800. That's reality.

I’m not very entreprenurial at all, I have no drive at all to do any of that, and while I don’t love working 9-5 I see no better realistic option right now. Also entrepenureship might be more romantisized in the US than let’s say, Sweden (where I live) because of the differences in culture and political landscape. I have a job as a UX-designer and my role is sought after, even a bit entreprenurial one could say, and will continue to be for a long time, plus there is lots of room for growth. What I’m not very good at is investing my money. I have to make a better plan. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@@lin_win7777 Yeah, well I just bought an apartment which is *hopefully* a good investment because that area is getting more and more popular, and I bought it for quite a good price since europe's economy is very inflicted by the war. So I'm planning to renovate a little bit (for comfort and as a long term investment) to be able to sell it for a higher price. Then ofc I have invested some in funds, but I really need to up my game in that department and make sure my portfolio is all balanced, because atm it's probably not. First I want to say how much I appreciate your videos and ways you deliver them in calm style. Second, I agree that entrepreneurship is a bit distorted due to fake gurus and all the videos. As someone who discovered financial literacy 2 years ago as well as who is entrepreneur. It seemed so fresh and promising. However, after learning how much effort, sweat, time, and money have to be put in, it made me stop day dreaming. Instead, I found out my own way and reason why and how I will become financially independent living a quality life. I’m in college, studying, I plan to go to work in the company, and along with that I follow my plan. Building something without proper experience, plan b, c, d, and out of FOMO is not a smart move, in my opinion. As sad as its sound business is not for everyone, but being wealthy is. Depends on how you do it.

I've always assumed most people making entrepreneur videos are either grifters, people wanting to become influencers, or children of wealthy parents looking for adoration. A 9-5 where you can work towards something you find meaning in and pays 1.5x median salary or more reliably is where it's at imo.

There are lots of different roles that need filled in society, and this is no different. There are some things that need done and you have to have people who are willing to do them. Same goes for employees. If everyone was an entrepeneur then I don't think society would hold itself together very long.

I completely agree with you Cara! Being an entrepreneur is not really for everyone. I know people who tried it but it’s just not in their blood to run a small business, more so, it pushed them even more to a stressful life over a 9-5 job. Some people who just likes to live a simple, sustainable life doesn’t mean they are not ambitious in life, they just know what they like in life. And being rich doesn’t always translate to happiness and self contentment.

Businesses fail because the owners didn't realize that you have to work harder than you did at a 9-5 that you hated. You have employees now that "hate their boss/work" and have so many responsibilities, and your work hours are literally about 20hrs a day. Ppl see the trips and cars not realizing that those owners are still working but they're showing you the social media highlights. Those cars are business assets...stay in your lane. It's not for the lazy and those who complain about work.

I can't help but feel that there are already too many businesses in this world, for every niche product or service there is already 100 businesses that service that need, I just don't see the need for more entrepreneurial businesses, so that's why I hate this trend of all these get rich quick gurus telling me the same thing of "starting a business is the only way to live"

Hi Cara, every video makes me reflect! I'm thinking about what being rich for me means, as per your subjection. I was born and live in Italy with my whole family. Italy is a country full of expats and it’s also the second oldest country in the world, meaning that the Government is fully concentrated on “old people” policies, such as making retirement accessible. In this context, since the day I was born, my parents have always encouraged me to study languages so that expatriate could be a possibility for me. Italy is not a poor country per se, but welfare could be better elsewhere. Getting back to what being rich for me means, it’s basically being able to stay in my beloved native country Italy being able to give my kids what my parents gave me: a good education, good quality food, the opportunity to travel and a nice civic mentality. I really hope to reach this status in the next 5/10 years without ever having to live above my means. Thanks for sharing this video

I agree with a lot of the points in this video. I am of the belief that sadly in this state of affairs of the world(at least my own) having one job* is dangerous. You need multiple income streams. And working a typical full time job makes it hard to pursue other things. Sure you could get a part time job but then schedules can conflict. That’s where entrepreneurship to an extent becomes more alluring. Freelancing, side hustles, those things help fill in gaps. That being said, I also hope for a better future where people can just have one job and be comfortable. ❤

That's the mindset I've adopted. I want enough to live comfortably, be able to take nice vacations here and there, and have enough in case of emergency like a job firing (cuz job security and severance packages aren't a thing in the job force). What's the point in having millions of dollars if you're miserable every single waking second?

I'm glad that I'm foolish enough to believe that I can actually start making money through my passions. I've never thought that I'd be able to gain more than 2k subs faster. I can't imagine how many opportunities could have been wasted if I didn't have courage to go after them. That includes having this channel, being in a management role, having the people who actually care about me for who I am, freelance gigs, being an ambassador in a creative community and now I'm also planning on honing my public speaking skills through joining a toastmaster club and these all happened in 2023. It started with writing them all down on a piece of paper. A paper that serves as a reminder for me to go after what I want even through hard times. I'm not bragging about my accomplishments but simply hoping that this message can also inspire others to believe in themselves.

Entrepreneuring isn’t for everyone, and I personally would never demonize those who like having that stable paycheck. The reason I’m in my business is because what I do fulfills me, it’s hard yes, there’s a lot of work, and getting clients is no easy feat, but at the end of the day, as long as what you’re doing gives you joy that’s all it matters.

I work a 9-5 and tried several times to be my own boss. Last try is currently as immigration consultant, the fact that I am not answering to my boss at my job after 5pm is much better than having to deal with my clients messages, emails, contact forms, inquiries let alone paying business bills. Its tough and not for everyone.

Plus the addition of benefits and a 401k are enough to sway me in the direction of splitting my time between WFM and a job elsewhere

My 9-5 comes with amazing benefits and access to resources. I get mentorship, guidance, retirement options and financial stability. Work life balance is amazing. As a qoute on qoute entrepreneur shit sucks man. I run a live bait business in texas which sells live shrimp and croaker. The money is good but im going to school to become a process technician. The only pros is the money honestly. I make between 150 to 600 a day. The cons are working 7 days a week from spring to fall. The wear and tear of carrying buckets constantly. The uncertainty of your bait dying before being able to sell it to a wholesaler. I just wanna work 12 hour shifts and make enough to chill

While being your own boss sure has a nice ring to it, I feel many people heavily overestimate the level of independence you have as a business owner. Most small business owners are about as independent as a middle manager. While you might not have anyone above you, you’re still answering to clients, employees, the government, investors, banks, etc. In the end it doesn’t matter if you need to fulfill some quarterly deadline or pay rent and a bank loan. It’ll lead you into the exact same conflict situations, just in one case with your private money on the line. Most self employed people I know work much longer hours then me being a regular employee and while they do earn more per month, I earn more per hour, which in my opinion is the much more important metric. Having money is nice, but if you don’t have time to spend it, it’s rather pointless in my opinion.
