Thanks for watching this video. How do you use modes for improvising? Post in the comments. Also, if you have a question, post below.

Even when using the pentatonics, the major problem with practicing is they always start on the root note. That creates a hell of a ingrained habit. Practice should be alternated with pickup notes to assimilate practical applications. So in a sense starting on different notes of the Pentatonic is still essentially modes.

Hi Kerry! Excellent approach! I do add the 6th and 9th to the minor pentatonic to give the Dorian Mode sound. I call them the "Cool Notes"

Minor and Major Pentatonics are great. But modes like Dorian and Mixolydian have so much color. Most people think modes are harder than they actually are. Guitar teachers over the years have IMO taught them wrong and overcomplicated them.

I think he means just to get started improvising melody over chord progressions . But I agree with you I think they’re taught to be overcomplicated and then can be overwhelming . At least in my experience. Still trying to understand it honestly . But I do find it interesting the order in which some learn , some learn all positions of pentatonic minor/major then move on to all of the modes and positions of major and vise versa
@vividsilence7067

Also this slightly might be an excuse on my end haha but some of the great melodic lines singers use are mapped out with pentatonics and I think that’s pretty useful for soul . But I also like how the pentatonics are a map in general for other notes of Ionian or aeolian so I think that can help you understand what scale degree you can target . (Sorry if I sound dumb , correct me if I’m wrong .. I’m still learning)

@@vividsilence7067If your still trying to understand and modes then forget everything you’ve been told and try this: Learn the diatonic scale (the Major scale) and it’s seven diatonic arpeggios, that are built off each note within the scale. This will teach you how to play all the modes as a byproduct. e.g: (Within the Key of C) If you play the C Major scale and target the arpeggio notes built off the second note in the scale, you get the D Dorian mode. Target the 3rd note in the key and you get the E Phrygian mode. So by targeting one of the seven arpeggios within the diatonic scale actually gives you one of the seven modes in the key. So earning the diatonic scale and it’s seven arpeggios will as the saying goes “kill two birds with one stone.” It will give you the ability to target the best notes over all seven chords within the key AND play all the modes. Give it a try and you’ll see. Play a C Major scale shape and target one of the arpeggios within that shape, using the other notes (that are not in the arpeggio) as passing tones, by always starting and ending your phrases on the chords tones (the arpeggio notes.) This is how to learn the modes fast.

It seems like Dorian and mixolydian is common in soul like funk blues and jazz 🎺 gospel especially but the penitonic minor and major is the common voicing love them but the modes help you creat something that never been played and odd I add modes all the time

@@otisconner548 thanks that’s pretty useful and glad you said that I was just at a jam session the other night and this guy said let’s play this standard called “so what” and showed me Dorian and man I thought it sounded so soulful . And mixolydian I hear it’s good to use over the 5 or as a leading tone for a resolution. Again thanks for the info … whats some other ways you think of Dorian and mixolydian ?

We are not teaching kids to be creative and use their imaginations. Charlie Parker did not think modal or keys. To him, the chromatic scale was all there is and show me a better improviser who DOESN’T USE PATTERNS when they are out of ideas.
