On your point about charitable giving of billionaires, one point that I don't think is talked about enough is that the existence of billionaires (and their charitable giving) completely undermines democracy. An organisation like the Gates Foundation has more money than some countries, and two people (Bill and Melinda Gates) get to decide what to do with it, what problems are most important to solve, and who to give it to. In this way, they have more power than some governments. In a global democracy, the same billionaires would be taxed appropriately and their wealth redirected to democratically elected governments who then can decide (with the consent of the electorate) what that money is spent on and what those priorities should be. I know this is a bit of an idealised alternative scenario, but I think the fact that some wealthy individuals have more influence on the state of the world than whole countries is absolutely terrifying.

I think they'll remain comfortable for the rest of their life, but it's just been sad to see from a distance.

OK so I had this genius idea in college that I wrote a paper on, and this video comments section feels like the right place to share it because....y'all will appreciate it....it's relevant I swear!!! Basically, my proposal was that, in order to incentivize voter turnout, states should enter voters into a state-run lottery when they vote of only voters. After the election, one voter will win a couple million dollars. My argument hinged on the idea that (combined with making election day a national holiday), it would disproportionately incentivize low income voters, who are historically underrepresented at the voting booth (often because it's not financially feasible for them to skip work to vote). You know, might help even the playing field. And the rich folks wouldn't care as much but like, who cares about them, they already show up to vote! And it would be cheap, easy, and make people excited about elections, you know, add some real SHOWBIZ to the affair, gamify the elections a little. Anyways, I bring this up because, I had no idea when I wrote that paper that low income people spend proportionately more on lottery tickets than higher income people, but it totally makes sense, and it would've been the PERFECT argument for my paper like 10 years ago. And then I was like "I feel like Tiffany and her comments section would enjoy my novel idea about combining lotteries with increasing voter turnout". Maybe you did.

The reason why super rich people want more money is that you quickly get used to a new lifestyle quite quickly, but after that it's hard going back to a more "modest" lifestyle. You get used to spend thousands in places where you were spending tens before. That's one of the reasons why it's often much harder to live by the same amount of money as an older adult who previously earned a good salary than as for example a college student.

When I was a kid we were on vacation and my mom won 50,000 on a scratch off. Was about 30k after taxes and basically we just spent the rest of the vacation ballin the fuck out. Though the other side of that story is that my mom was addicted to scratch offs and would routinely buy them by the book (the entire roll the store puts in the display case). My childhood was filled with trips to 711 where I’d be sitting in the car where my mom would buy scratchers, do them in the car, go cash them in to buy more, rinse and repeat. When she passed away we found about six duffle bags worth of used scratch offs she would hide all over the place because she didn’t want us seeing them in the trash. So…..the odds were in her favor 😂 Every now and then I’ll see a lotto machine and throw a buck at it for a laugh. One tip that responsible lottery organizers (not in France but elsewhere in the EU) have is to admit to winning, but lie about the amount. If you say that you won 100k or 200k, that's still a huge amount that you can buy a few nice things with and you can say you're investing the rest (whether or not you actually do that). The hope after buying a ticket is real. It's how they get you... sometimes I need a bit of hope, though, and if I can spare a few bucks, I buy some hope with it.

If I won the lottery, I'd put myself and my husband through uni so we could pursue our dream careers. I'd pay off my parents' homes (they're divorced) and help my sister with a home and new vehicle. My husband would set his twin sister and their mom up with a house and vehicle and we'd start a college fund for the kids. We would want to invest some for our retirement, but we'd also have talked about opening a charity for middle income people that are often smashed into the cracks of society. They don't get food stamp help, healthcare breaks, tax breaks, etc. Too poor to survive but too rich to get social support - those are the people we'd want to help.

I worked at a store that sold lottery tickets that had a group of college students come in and do a similar thing to the Jerry and Marge Go Large premise (they are a pretty famous group now so you can probably figure out who these students are...) but in order to get around the worker-only lottery machine operating rule, the store I worked at just hired them for minimum wage an hour (like $9 in MT) and the state lottery official was PISSED. But the state couldn't do anything about it. When they won they paid the store back a significant amount more than what they were paid in wages as a thank you. It was a pretty neat thing to see up close like that.

My one takeaway from having to read George Orwells 1984 in high school was that the lottery sucks, in the book it’s just a way to keep the poor entertained and no one ever really won. As a kid I never really understood the point of wasting your hard earned money each week on the low possibility of winning and reading that book cemented it for me 😅

I read a galley book written by a guy whose job was to bail out lottery winners who had overspent and essentially ruined their lives. The book was a collection of cautionary tales explaining how each of his clients had gotten into the mess they were in and how their lives had been changed, as well as the lives of all the people closely associated with them. I thought it was pretty good. I don't know if it ever got published.

I think lottery winners should definitely consult financial advisors and look into ethical investing that will pay them dividends over time. I don't say this because I believe people need to necessarily hoard or accumulate even more wealth even when they have more than they can spend; I say this because oftentimes those who win the lottery simply don't know how to manage their money so as to hold onto it and enable it to last long term. Financial advisors and wise investments can help them with that, and in turn, they'll be able to live comfortably and help those they love as well as strangers for much longer - ideally their whole lives.

As someone who won a chunk of money on a lotto, I can assure you - it was overwhelming happiness followed by overwhelming shame when it was all gone. I always thought that the lottery could be used to bring so many more people out of poverty if a) the jackpots were split into multiple drawings (e.g., seven $1 million jackpots instead of one $7 million jackpot), and b) if it was more like a raffle where winners are guaranteed (you just have to get your ticket pulled in the drawing).

smart idea, spreading the wealth instead of hoarding it! this reminds me of a documentary i watched (living on a dollar a day) that featured a small Guatemalan town in extreme poverty. the fathers of several families would contribute equally to pool a large sum, and they'd take turns giving the pool to each man so their families could afford a large purchase they otherwise wouldn't be able to. wholesome af

It is mathematically ridiculous to buy more than one ticket in an open-ended draw, it does not increase your chances of winning whatsoever. The only time buying more than one ticket increases your chances of winning is when there's a set number of tickets to be sold. Buying 500 Powerball/649/etc tickets is not going to increase your chances of winning. The only "lottery" I participate in is a provincial fireman's 50/50 raffle, I buy one ticket a month for $5. The pot usually hits 300K so someone takes home 150K, and the firemen get 150K. I feel like that's a manageable amount of money to win, you're not going to go insane with millions but it's going to help you out quite a bit. I do already know what I'll do with the money if I win lmfao, but I'm not counting on it or obsessed with it.

You’re literally wrong. They draw a number which is 1/N possibilities. You also draw X numbers each with 1/N odds of being the drawn value. The bigger your X the greater your odds are of any your X being equal to the 1 they draw of the N possibilities. 10 tickets bought is 10 times the chance of you winning.
@Kknderbueno2 жыл бұрын
There’s not a set number of tickets sold, but there is a set number of number combinations. So for example, imagine there were 10 slips of paper with numbers 1-10 written on each one. Any number of people can buy tickets for this lottery. If you buy 1 ticket with 1 number on it, you have a 1/10 chance of winning. If you bought 10 tickets, though, with one of each of the numbers, you would have a 100% chance of winning. However, the more people play, the more likely you are to share the prize. Finally, if you bought 9 tickets with the same number on it and that number is pulled, you will benefit if someone else also chosen as the winner with only 1 ticket. You will get 9/10 of the prize, and the other person will get 1/10 of the prize.

Ooh ooh I would love to hear you talk more about the nonprofit industrial complex.... I used to work for a nonprofit and the entire sector is notorious for burning its workers out. The nonprofit I used to work for has had SIX executive directors in the 8 years I've had connections there... And because of this, the org at large never makes an progress, and each new generation of leadership repeats the same mistakes over and over and over. People always leave in complete distress and don't stick around to pass on their wisdom to their successors. But on a more macro level, nonprofits play a KEY role in capitalism at large, namely they exist to help the wealthy feel less guilty about their wealth. Which means at the end of the day, regardless of who the org claims to serve, their ultimate client is the millionaire who will donate enough to keep their doors open for another fiscal year. Of course, I'm talking about nonprofits that were created by normal folks like you and me.... This totally ignores the nonprofits that the ultra wealthy create to funnel their funds into a clever tax shelter. Seriously Tiffany, I would loooooooooove to watch a video on this!! Please!!!

My family was very very poor for being in a wealthy country, & my perpetually exhausted Mom used to get a couple lotto cards & we'd scratch them together to cap off our grocery days. I don't share Mom's penchant for gambling or magical thinking, but every once in a while on my grocery days, I'll get a scratch'n'win & know that I miss her very much & I'm just re-creating this old ritual. Often I don't bother scratching them for weeks, & more than once I found a lotto ticket expired while I was deep cleaning. This always makes me extra leery about accepting easy excuses to discount why people do things. People are complex; people are weird. But people deserve to be supported & allowed to thrive without exploiting other people who deserve the same freedoms. Wealth hoarders are the real villains in these narratives, not the poor Mom spending $2 for a few minutes of happy fantasizing about wealth with her young daughter who people making 6+figure salaries theorize as "wasteful spending" (therefore proof of her 'bad character') & use to demonize "the poor".
