I've had my 4090 since February. Leave mine on for weeks at the time. MSI 4090 EK Waterblock with active back plate. Used the power cable that came with the 4090 and haven't had any issues.

Sorry, backwards idea, b/c you'd smoke the 12v power rail for PCI-E slots. Leave the power, and only unhook ground sensor loopback pin. Your video card SHOULD detect fault and turn off by self. You will need to hard power off/on computer to regain video. Also, if you do notice plugs getting hot, do not unplug them from your card. Quickly kill main power to your computer..

@@aleksandrbmelnikov Should. That's the problem. The should shut off, but they're not. Cables are smoking or outright on fire before it gets noticed and the computer shut down. Should is why the ASUS boards are blowing up CPUs. A good engineer NEVER relies on should.

I wonder if the 4 sense pins are constantly monitored. Maybe flip them to trigger a lower power mode between the PSU and GPU. Doing a hard cutoff on the main line has its own challenges in such a small form factor as there's multiple conducting paths.

@@scphan01 Only one way to know how card mfg worked protection. Do a pin mod to put each plug sense on a switch. If your screen goes black (no signal), then yes it is. As for pulling PC main power, any bad shutdown is better than a good meltdown.

That is a slick idea! DerBauer is a very creative person from the products he puts out. I wonder if he considered a 90° interface as well? Perhaps that would have created issues with the durability or interfered with the display and/or control button? I have been loving the content you provide for a while now, and appreciate your transparency regarding everything. I hope you are recovering well, and look forward to more offering. 6:00 I feel like that kind of rocking back/forth is part of the reason of the failings, due to it spreading apart the pins inside, so hopefully Roman did the smart and used extremely solid and durable closed-loop connectors instead of the paper-thin crimped terminals that deform and split apart that being said, a nice thing that may/could have been added is a thermistor connected to a little beeper to warn you if it detects high temperatures on the connector itself. maybe for a rev2?

Nice tool. I think they need to go back to the drawing board on power delivery. Better to go through multiple cable and connections then one high wattage connection. Also changing from plastic to some kind of ceramic connector would help.

I've got a RTX 4090 Asus Rog OC card. Have had the pc running for about 5-6 days now due to running some game dedicated servers. I've not seen any melting issues so far on the 12pin. Using the stock 4x 8 pin to 12 pin that Asus sends with their GPU's.

Pretty cool but it would be nice if they did a 90 degree version too, as cable managing 3 PCIE 8 pin cables across the top of your GPU can be a bit challenging to make it look nice.

I just ordered one of these for my personal system, and now that I'm looking... this may not clear with a vertical mount GPU in the 011D, the RAM might be in the way. That will be a real bummer since I'm using some 180 degree adapters off Amazon right now, and I'd MUCH rather use this. The dual 8-pin adapters from Amazon have a very slight cant on them where this should be a lot more ridged laterally, and I would love to have the power read outs as well. Always nice to be able to monitor the current levels, even if it's not 12VHPWR. They're not the only ones that can melt.

Just wondering, is there a chance you will do a kind of comparison or review on the new thermal grizzly cpu cooling pads? I've seen some adds about them here and there and the idea looks good, but as someone who uses their pc for production I always kind of look around to see if anyone has any benchmarks on using them for such purposes. Especially with AIO's. Would be sweet to see your opinion on it, have a good one!

If you really want to know how much power is being used, get a Kill-a-Watt and plug it in your outlet. It'll read the power draw directly before any losses. This is a nice device to specifically target a single device, but I'm sure there may be software that could do the same thing considering that the only time the card uses power is when its on.

Switching power supplies detects voltage output and adjusts it real time. I don't think load will reduce voltage as long as the power supply is working normally

the problem always was a design error from nvidia which just like youtubers and reviewers mistook a test bench for a PC, there is no user error in plugging the cable, the rtx are wider than previous cards AND the 12vhpwr requires even more width than bendable pcie8 which make that combination incompatible with 99% of pc cases on the market, when you close the panel your force/pressure the connector which can easily skew it outside of it's connector, an angle adapter if not too thick will for sure fix the error of nvidia

I love that Roman comes up with such practical solutions. I don't think you're ever going to run into the melting cables on yours. Personally, I'm still 50/50 on whether it's a QA error, meaning they missed a bad connector or something on the affected units, or user error. Or a mix of the two: some being QA issues, some being just user error. Who knows. I don't think there will ever be a satisfactory conclusion because either 1) Nvidia screwed up and refuses to admit it or really doesn't realize they did, and given the relatively miniscule failure rate it's most likely no one will ever be able to prove it or 2) It really is user error, and we'll never admit it could be that, because it needs to be corporate greed behind such things. It's human nature to assume the worst, and so we will assume the worst, even if given every indication it could be anything else if there is even one person saying "But..." we'll given that one person the benefit of the doubt. Northridge is that person. It's also Nvidia. If they told us the world was round, well the flat earthers would have the majority of the KZbin PC community signing up, because that's just the way it works these days.

I think it's because they are cramming 600 watts through a connector not made for it. The technical specs from PCI-SIG, when calculated by the values present, rate it for 350-400W max safe transfer.

as an engineer I refused to purchase a 4000 series. It was an obvious issue that evga even saw in the 3090ti and used 2 of them. Ans their unreleased 4090 had 2 cause 6 pins can't replace 12 pins. Its a mass problem not just a connection issue. If it was a connection issue then the plugs would just arch and never melt. In construction this is normal problem, why you use wire nuts and seal with electrical tape to control the connection and contain any sparks.

There are cables from MSI now that are different color on plug then outside of plug so you can actually see if it comes lose which might actually help for real, northridgefix talked about it anyway he also noted the real issue is it clips on down the middle not from left to right on both sides which potentially fixes the wiggle issue, cos the slighest vibration can cause it to wiggle and blackscreen something Bulzoid mentioned having once.

Probably my biggest issue with modern motherboards is how PCIE slot Release mechanisms work. It's borderline impossible to release modern GPU from some boards with those small and fragile little levers almost completely underneath the GPU.

Hi Jay, I work in automotive and deal with the clips on a regular basis. Little tip incase you didnt know or if it can help others. if you have trouble disconnecting these plugs/getting the locking tab to unlock. Gentle pressure pushing the cable into the plug while unlocking tab should help the tab unlock easier.

I don't remember what video i saw this in but one company had Colored 12vhpw pins so you could see if it was plugged in all th way. if you saw color then it's not in all the way. Great way to solve the issue.

It will remove stress from the cable, since instead of having it kinked and pushed by the case wall it will just be loose inside with plenty of space to change direction. I wish it would have the power input at 90* angle so the cable goes parallel to the GPU but this is still good enough.

@@hubertnnn its a power draw through too small a socket issue and not a cable issue, cablemod adaptors are still melting into the card socket showing as such and with the ones l have seen that melted its appears to melt on the gpu side of the adaptor and not the cable side. had the same issue with tamiya battery plugs if you upgraded the motor or battery without changing the connectors, it was easy to spot due to the connectors being an almost see through white so you can see the plastic change color as it starts to burn from overload. nvidia 40 series plug and socket is black so wont see an issue till its too late. ps. l have never heard of this issue before they changed the plug/socket size. much more power hungry gpu's drawing power through a single smaller connector and the public is told its user error 🤣

@@bjorn1583 Its actually a bit of both. Too small connector is the main issue, but the fact that the wire is stressed or not pushed all the way in (the so called "user error") is making the issue worse by reducing the already too small contact area.

Using this device doubles the chance of melted connectors, since now there are two of these dodgy connectors in the current path. It might help if you keep an eye on it during gaming. What could really prevent the melting is to use ONE conductor for the power, instead of four. And use a connector that can handle the current. Plenty of capable connector designs are available, for example what is in use for the main battery connections in drones. Another great way to prevent the melting is to quadruple the voltage. 12V just doesn't cut it anymore. Time to move on.

Gamingnexus already proved exactly that. The only problem the cables have is that sometimes its hard to push it in all the way and tell if it’s properly plugged in if your inexperienced. Its 100% repeatable by not plugging it in all the way and they did everything they could to recreate it without having it not plugged in all the way and NOTHING worked except that.

They even put stuff inside the connector and couldn’t recreate it, they took out pins to try and recreate it, they used X-rays to see if there was metal in the lining of the plastic. Nothing worked in burning it except not plugging it in all the way.

jay and team firstly greetings from Australia. that is such a great idea someone put a lot of thought into this product, and i liked the 90 degree adapter too you featured a while ago, perhaps they could also incorparate a swith like fuse so that it would trigger an alarm or warning if the card was overheating at the connector so as to save melting the connector or causing a fire hazard. perhaps you could suggest this to them as an idea, just a thought.

PCIe slot power draw can be found in either HWinfo 64 or GPU-Z , for a 4090 i am seeing just 8W usage so yes 99% comes from the plug .

Jay this looks awesome ordered one myself. It has a live data feed so is there not a way to force a shutdown when amps go to high or set an alarm on the pc if so would love to see a video how to accomplish this.
