I don’t have a no buy challenge, cause I quite enjoy buying stuff. I’m just watching this video because I love to hear your thoughts!

"No-buy" is not an achievable goal for me, but minimizing my crap buying is something I try to do. Thanks for this; it helps.

My “why” originally was to see if I could cut out enough of the extras that I could afford to buy a house. And yes, after a year of not wasting money I found I could afford this major purchase. But now, I continue this no buy because of my horror of the consumerism that has overtaken this world. I am so truly a minimalist now that I find I can live very nicely without stuffing my life with the newest fashion and what the influencers are pushing. Thank you for changing my life, Cinzia!

I don't think no buy year would work for me but conscious buying year does. I have been very deliberate with shopping these past months and therefore feel more satisfied when I buy anything

Hearing it like this, I am surprised to find that most of those free activities like meeting up to write/draw/read, going for a walk with your home made coffee, gaming, board games, making music together etc. is just smalltown/village life.

maybe we lived in different small towns, small town life where i grew up and in all the neighboring towns was getting absolutely shitfaced on either cheap beer/liquor or homemade stuff.

Lil' tip: instead of buying books, go to the library! Even if they don't have what you're looking for, they might be able to order in for you!
@Eric.Taylor.19623 ай бұрын
I like that you highlighted the need for an emotional driver to power your motivation. The passion to begin and then to actually follow through is vital. Breaking down a no buy year into steps is an interesting and sensible strategy. It's always good to hear advice from someone who has lived the experience and isn't simply repeating what others have said.

I really like your incremental no-buy and adding new things over time. That sounds MUCH more sustainable. I didnt think of that so thanks for the tip!

Thank you. That was very helpful. I’m not looking to do a no buy year, but I want to examine what I don’t need in my life, and spending a month at a time not buying just one type of thing sounds like the way to go.
@happytofu53 ай бұрын
How about doing the challenge in reverse, so instead of saying you won't buy any new books, you focus on picking and reading the books you already own? I think that sounds less negative and has the same result.
@tiryaclearsong4213 ай бұрын
I think different people manage differently. For some people focusing on reading their collection will stop them from buying books while others (like me) will happily accumulate more to make a happy pile to read when I'm done. So I need a rule to not buy new books more than I need to challenge myself to read the books I have. I will do the latter regardless.

Cinzia, thanks for the video! I enjoyed your previous video about no-buy and almost started to implement it myself. but my friend reasonably noticed that the generic approach wouldn’t work for me. For example, I have been collecting my clothes for a couple of years and still haven’t got all necessities. Another example is I need some tech which buying I can’t postpone. Or cup of coffee I get each morning as I get to office. Yes, this cup each day in office seem to cost much at the end of the year. However, my working attitude would be utterly miserable without it. This really long comment is made for you so you think about tailoring no-buy to your needs. It’s very important

Sometimes I do a no buy week. Works better for me than slowly adding more stuff to the list of things not to buy. I do not think that I compensate for those weeks when I go back to my normal spending, but I have no data to back that up with. Underpriced thriftstore finds are my weakness. Or maybe I just have bad taste, which could also explain why things I like often happen to be cheap, no; affordable.

So yep, I started a no buy and failed. But THIS seems much more doable. So far this month I haven’t bought any books so that’ll be my category for September. I think I’ll make October makeup. I like this idea! It’s like debt payoff…this is a sort of snowball/avalanche method
@Genie5193 ай бұрын
I find starting with a month is much more doable. Our family choose 3 months a year usually January, June and September work for us and all we buy is gas, groceries and pay our usual bills.

What? No buy means no snacks? I could never live like that. No new items, yes. No snacks? No way. I see them as a necessity to keep the spirits up. P.S.: I love your outfit!

Interesting take. I've been quite low buy for a few years now, where I only really buy things that I really want or need rather than anything on impulse, and it does save a lot of money (and space. and time to spend getting rid of stuff). I suppose everyone has to make their own rules. When something breaks, like my raincoat, do I replace it or do I just get wet from then on? Or does it then fall under necessities and doesn't count? If the charity shop I volunteer in has the perfect hoodie that I've been looking for for years (and denying myself other clothes on the way that were nice but not quite right), does it count then? I bought the hoodie. It was too good to pass it up and I hope it will last me at least a decade. Certainly a long awaited purchase that I'm incredibly happy about. But I will continue with sticking to buying very few extra items, but remembering to have fun on the way. Occasional concert tickets that don't cost the world are a lovely treat :D

After several years of 'no buy' (with occasional slip ups and an 'allowance' of one meal out + one coffee date out per month) I am finally in a position to buy stuff again. I can't tell you how weird this feels. So far I have bought a dress and a cardigan to go on a slightly posh excursion with my friend. It feels very strange but I know that i will use these items again. I still dont want to buy stuff. It is more than the price of items, it is the storing and maintaining of them too. Plus adding to fat cat profits ( I like buying from local small businesses - such as farm shops and crafts people.

To me it would be easier to do it the other way round, 3 months of buying nothing, and then every month I am allowed back something. You get a little reward, but also you would be much more conscious of on what and how much you are spending on somthing.

The only social media that I utilize is KZbin and I am devoid of ALL marketing schemes from GREEDY corporations with the advent of ad blocking, so I am NEVER subjected to ads of any sort.

Cinzia✨ You rock'n roll❤ Please! Stop using the word 'why' as a noun! Please, please, please differentiate yourself - especially as a beautifully educated soul pursuing a PhD no less - from other vernacularly lazy social media 'influencers' and use the true word 'purpose'. What is so difficult about a disyllabic word that so few people are willing to incorporate it into their spoken vocabulary?! It's the bafflement of lexiphilia everywhere!
