Great video Morty! You have great storytelling skills that allow you to piece together so many seemingly disparate parts and scenes into a cohesive whole. This is inspiring me to branch out with how I film my videos for sure! I will say though, I still prefer the cleaner, sharper, more clinical anamorphic lenses because I can choose how much character and degradation to add to them in post. Starting with a super soft look is almost impossible to sharpen up if I need to, whereas it's not hard at all to soften a sharp image. Dehancer + a mist filter gives me everything I need to get a vintage look, so I will be sticking to Sirui and Laowa. Crazy that Atlus let you borrow these lenses though, wow! They seem like such nice guys!

Lens charts can easily mislead you if you're going for a specific look. I'm happy to see companies deciding to not for for the most clinical image. Sharpness is important, and lots of chromatic aberration tends to look bad, but distortion, out of focus edges, and a less clinical center can add a lot to making something look more engaging. My favorite spherical lenses aren't the cleanest.

I wonder how the DZOFILM pavos and the Laowa PL/EL nanomnorphs would fair in this comparison?
@MortyFilms11 ай бұрын
I only briefly was able to play around with the Pavos, I think they are a bit softer but definitely also have that nice falloff towards the edges. But they’re also a 2x squeeze, so the look is a bit more extreme compared to the Mercurys I’d say. I hope I can do a video on them soon.

The truth is sharpness actually is harder/costlier to achieve. Case in point, some of the most affordable full frame anamorphic lenses available today… the Blazar Remus lenses, are also among the most affordable. They have a size and image very similar to the Mercury series. But without the defects of the Mercury lenses… such as focal plain curvature, and the weird off axis panning defect. I picked up a set of 3 for $2199.
@ForestCinema11 ай бұрын
My thing with the Mercuries is they’re a proper front anamorphic, and Atlas clearly uses vintage coatings, not just modern coatings in the right color, which is what we get from the budget lens manufacturers. It all stacks up to something a LOT closer to real vintage anamorphics.
@MortyFilms11 ай бұрын
Right, I have seen some footage of the Remus, they seem to be very soft. I’d love to get my hands on a set and review them, they look very different from other lenses at that price point.
@MortyFilms11 ай бұрын
@@ForestCinema also a LOT more expensive than cheaper options though, there’s a place for both I think, the Mercurys open up a whole new world of quality anamorphics that don’t cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
@ForestCinema11 ай бұрын
@@MortyFilms I pre-ordered a 42mm for $5K. I sold my projector anamorphic setup for $4500. There’s absolutely a place for the various types and tiers of anamorphic, but most of the people that bash Mercury for softness are just people who will never use them anyway. They’re the first lens in my price range that can actually provide a vintage character

I’m assuming the 42mm is the best first lens to pickup, but which one would you choose for a second tighter focal length?
@MortyFilms11 ай бұрын
The 42mm for sure is the way to start this set. I think for the second one I might actually skip the 72mm and go straight to the 95mm. I think it’s the perfect middle ground between the 72 and the 138 as a tele option.

All the legacy brands try to mask imperfections as character. Imperfections are fine, but I'm not paying a premium for that. Remember, you can always add imperfections or "character" in post to a more clinical lens but cannot make an imperfect lens look clinical.

I got the Remus, you don’t need a promist, the image is less sharp than the atlas mercury
@mrjoebsoto11 ай бұрын
There's just something creamy, organic, textured, and present in the atlas brand and other high end anamorphic glass. These new budget options are almost artificial, too clean and digitized that takes away from the fingerprint of quality glass. Hands down, i would pick up the mercury set, or any vintage anamorphic glass, any day over these budget options. I can afford the budget options, but still won't buy them.
@MortyFilms11 ай бұрын
I think it’s amazing to have the option of the budget glass, but you’re totally right. I mean there are more interesting options coming now with the Blazar Remus for example. Would love to get my hands on them!
@TJA8611 ай бұрын
I agree with your point about softness, but I think you're misleading people a bit with the idea that more expensive anamorphic lenses are softer. Arri and panavision have some extremely sharp options with very minimal anamorphic characteristics, and they are way more expensive than Atlas. They (at least panavision) also offer some much more distorted and vintage looking options. But to your point, it's all just about the look that works for the specific project.
@MortyFilms11 ай бұрын
You’re absolutely right! Thank you for clarifying. I noticed a lot of people ranting on ‘soft’ anamorphics, so I wanted to make clear why they look the way they do, but yeah, Arri and Panavision do offer some very clean options in the high end. It definitely depends on whether you want to go with a modern or a vintage look.
