You Gotta BE CAREFUL When Buying Cars & Parts!

Hey Good People,
It seems like I've been running into parts issues all week long. Both are affecting my cash flow! These are big jobs that are paying well and every time there is a parts issue, it messes up my money. But it's all good, all things will come in due time. It will be fine eventually.
In today's video, I have a closer look at a reman cylinder head I received from a big box parts store, and a GMC Sierra that a customer may have overpaid for.

hello Alex, Shon and all the good people that support them, wanted to make sure that all of you know that NAPA was bought by investors from Viet Nam, they no longer have all the good brands and warranties, it cost me a lot of money until I figured it out, had to replace brakes on 6 cars out of my own pocket, NAPA premium rotors that did not last 1 year, ceramic pads that turn wheels black in days, the oil filters are no longer made by WIX, I was a loyal NAPA guy for over 35 years, got blindsided but had to make it right for my customers they now have Orielly brakes and are happy, I was told when I had a customers car with brake rotors that were flaking away at only 11 months that they would send them to NAPA and they would let me know, I never went back, a costly lesson, thousands of dollars of NAPA parts still under warranty in my trash can

Man at this point you might as well start rebuilding them again yourself... Between the cost shipping them back waiting for the parts to arrive... If you got a pull stuff apart and recheck torque.😮

One time i diagnosed a bad starter (im not a mechanic) took the old unit in to parts store had had it tested and it failed …. installed a new “lifetime warranty” house brand & installed it and it didn’t work …. i had to explain to my friend who couldn’t wrap their head around the fact the part was “new” but didn’t work & even question if it was diagnosed properly….anyways i went back and had it tested and it failed grabbed another “new” starter and had them test it & it passed and the rest is history!

As a mechanic, when I go to get parts, I've made it a habit to test all new or used parts for this exact reason. Time is money, plus having angry customers through no fault of my own is upsetting.

Alex what's crazy/crappy glad you caught that. Because you or a customer torque that head down after new gasket those bolts being over torque could blow the gasket so all the time and parts waisted for no reason. But crappy craft waste timw and money just finished 16hr shift falling asleep another awesome video

Bolts torqued can take more torque to remove sometimes, on old parts it takes more torque due to corrosion and stuff

Alex,you are hilarious. On a more serious note, you r correct about parts being assembled improperly by the vendor. Also refusing to work on some cars that shows evidence of hackery is wise. Photograph and document, because the last thing you need is a customer blaming you for someone else's mistakes. I have to say that you are one of the few KZbinrs that show most, if not all the problems inside and outside your shop. It would be good to get rid of the inventory outside, maybe send them to auction, or sell them as is with full disclosure of all problems. If not dealt with it will continue to get bigger.

I service a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan here in San Diego with almost 180K on it. Brand new trans filter, new fluid, new plugs, new coils and a few other things. This customers Pentastar runs great.

Their is literal a dodge, ford & chevy always in your shop, just says a lot of what not to buy at this point. I had very small issues with my charger when I owed it but I am staying away at this point from those car makers lol. Never had a tick but wouldn’t risk it at this point.

That Pentastar 3.6 has a high failure rate due to combination of bad engineering and lack of routine maintenance. I think they still have a lawsuit held up in court. Jeep keeps appealing.

@@daveunbranded The engine overheats and the plastic oil cooler seals fail. Coolants leaks into the oil causing emulsification.

@daveunbranded The oil cooler will fail eventually no matter how well you maintain it. An old school oil cooler with fins for air cooling mounted down by the radiator would have been more than sufficient for any of the vehicles the pentastar comes in.

probably low on freon, on a cold morning pressure could be too low to let the compressor run, as the outside temp warms up pressure will rise letting the compressor run, best to remove all the refrigerant and weigh it, then add the correct amount, but if you just want to add a pound with a kit from a parts store I promise I will not tell lol

You are potentially low on Freon when at idle if the Freon is low, it will get warm as soon as you start driving it will get cold again
