I absolutely LOVE the DIY stuff. I thought I was creative buying up extra rack components, repurposing clamps and hanging my laptop and other equipment off the rack but I am nothing but an amateur next to some of these. I was quite happy with mine until I saw these. Now I need a ton more pads. 😄

If you were ranking them, the No.1 look and sound goes to Admeezy (IMO) How GOOD LOOKING is that DWe kit?? I agree with you that the Roland symbol combination matches beautifully, it’s CLEAN and understated, so very professional! I've begun converting my vintage (late 80's/early 90's?) Mapex Mars Series (12",16", 24") kit using a combination of Redshot triggers, Remo Silent Stroke heads, Lemon/Roland/Simmons cymbals, GoEdrum VH-11 hat controller, and a teeny weenie little Roland TD-4 module. My snare is actually an old Boom Theory Space Muffins 12" dual zone that I've basically DIY rebuilt. Seeing as I already had the the Mapex kit tucked away in storage with a bit of hardware? My overall DIY conversion investment has honestly been surprisingly low. zZounds pay while you play option also helped out a bit. Yet I can now admit that using single ply tom & kick heads with external triggers? Is definitely less than ideal. Especially with the previous Roland TD-6v module that I was using for sure. Less as much now with the TD-4 seeing as merely on a trigger response standpoint? The TD-4 as been a noticeably and dramatically better improvement. I'm honestly thinking about picking up a second TD-4 to expand (seeing as I got this one for only like $75), but ideally I'm aspiring to most likely go the eDRUMin route with a robust mobile interface and something like an old 2012 i7 16gb Macbook Pro. That would pretty much cover all my needs at a substantial budget for the time being. In closing? I can't say enough good things about the LEMON brand of cymbals, and I plan to eventually deck out my entirel DIY conversion project with them exclusively moving forward! Thank's Justin! I love the fantastic content man! CHeers!

There were some wild kits on display. I bought a DXTremeII kit several years ago and then started buying extra bits for it. I could have had quite a good set up but I was to busy working and it was only my son playing it. I still have it and all the extra bits and bobs plus rack hardware that I'm trying to sell. I liked the 2 box set up. It' looked great.

Hey Justin, Thanks for showing my (current) gigging kit. I feel honoured to get a mention with all the awesome kits on show. I would just like to point out though, Mike at Drone sold me the LV cymbals complete, I didn't convert them myself. An oversight on my part in the description. They were great for several years and I would still be using them. It was just a chance try out of the ATV cymbals that made me go over to rubber cymbals. The trade off of them playing a little better was not feeling as nice under-the-stick. You are right, it is a Gibraltar Stealth Rack set up. Trial and errors is definitely a good way to describe my journey, but for sure, less error than trial.

Yes I definitely understand the hate for the lemon module it’s pretty bad it’s only used to trigger the fourth crash second china and left kick drum. So far it handles trigger accuracy well, but wouldn’t recommend for main module.

Some incredible ingenuity in most of these kits. I really do prefer the kits that can pull off an acoustic stage presence over those that don't. They are just more appealing and interesting to look at but in the end it's how they perform that matters the most.

ya I got the lemon because of your recommendation. Just needed to flip the cables inside for the Yamaha head. They Work great and have dual zones which is nice and 3 zone ride.

I started playing a "hybrid" kit way back in 1990/91 (my memory is a little fuzzy). I had a 5 piece acoustic kit and a pair of Roland SPD8 pads, one to either side of me. I've since played on every combination of acoustic and electronic percussion imaginable The biggest issue is setup and teardown. Unless you have a massive inheritance and don't have to hold down a job, the time involved in getting big hybrid or full-electronic kits to and from gigs is almost unmanageable. These days, I play live electronic music with a curved rack holding 4 different types of multipads and some floor pedals for kick, hat, program changes,. etc. It's still a bit of a hassle, but a lot less hassle than dealing with some of the kits in these clips I'm looking at most of the kits in this video and all I can think about is the time and effort involved in setup and teardown for live shows.

RTOM needs to make a version 2 of the Black Holes!! This time with built in 2 to 3 zone 360 degree triggering. That would hopefully solve everyone's gripe with internal triggers and the hassle of change over from acoustic drums to mesh heads and triggers?

I would love to know the specifics of how he put the custom case together at 9:55!!!! There is a definite market for someone to produce a custom housing for the more plastic-y/25 pin snake modules like the TD27 where the sounds are good (yes I know - Roland - but shoot me - I don't mind them for live work!) but the module is less robust than it could be.

On the DTX-8 bass drum mod that I did, I only needed to drill three holes in the KP90. Two in the metal frame and one the top as shown. I like how the KP90 feels and adding the mesh on top made no difference. Similar to using a patch.
