There really is a place called Dead Man's Curve on Barstow Road between Barstow, California and Fort Irwin, California, in the middle of the Mojave (pronounced MoJAVE, like in "javelin" in "American G I.") A little monitor gives us the type of box to use when the item is scanned. And as so often we don't really know what's going on. In large logistics companies, box sizes can be selected in a way not to rumble in the transporting van. They are not unneccessary big, they are fitting to the needs of the delivery car tour. Perhaps that's the case here. Or - due to failing "just in time delivery" of the cardboard company - Amazon ran temporarily out of boxes of the right size. It is WAY more expensive (in terms of lesser throughput) to halt the delivery chain than to choose a box too big.
