I fully agree with you. My mate thought he would improve my mountain bike by fitting new parts that changed the geometry and ergonomics. (I know he was trying to do a nice thing for me) but a absolutely flipped my sh1t. The weekend was ruined, I had to take every thing apart and put it back together properly. Because he didn't, and if i didn't check it, it would have failed on the trails.

I had an older Honda civic. To put the hubcaps on, you place them against the wheel, then put the lug nuts on. The lug nuts hold the hubcaps. I had tires put on at a shop. A couple days later I happened to notice the hubcaps were installed covering the valve stems.I had to go back and have it done the right way. It’s almost like you have to stand there and watch the job being done for it to be done right.

I was helping a friend service his RAV4, oil change, etc. When it came time to check the tire pressure, I handed him a tire gauge and the reading came in at 60 PSI. Something is wrong, tried another gauge, same reading, I tried, same again, and on all four tires. Cold reading. He had new tires installed somewhere out of state just prior to moving here. So he had driven a fully loaded car with his family, 2000 miles with grossly overinflated tires. Unbelievable!

After having a flat tire repaired, I heard a knocking noice which a couldn’t identify. As I speeded up, the knocking became closer together. As I slowed down the knocking sound was farther apart. I put the transmission into neutral and revved up the engine. The time between knocking didn’t change which told me it had nothing to do with the motor. So, I concluded that I had picked up a twig under the car. Since there was a highway nearby, I decided to enter and speed up to eventually loosen and get rid of whatever was stuck under the car. However, now I could feel a vibration in the steering that got worst as I stepped on the gas. I pulled over to the side of the road to have a look. Believe it or not, I had one loose lug nut left on the wheel he had fixed the flat. That’s all that was holding the wheel. I borrowed one lug nut from the other 3 wheels to replace the lost lug nuts and drove back to the garage. They claimed no responsibility and I had no prove that the lug nut were only hand tightened. All that I can say is God was watching over me and made sure I pulled over before that last lug nut came off.

The lug nuts are tapered because they not only hold the wheel on the car, they also center the wheel on the studs. If the tire is on the ground when the lug nuts are torqued, the wheel will not be able to move on the studs if it is not already centered/seated against the brake rotor, which causes the lug nuts to get tight without actually moving the wheel. Once you start driving, the wheel will then shift and move slightly, and the lug nuts will no longer be tight against the wheel. This is fairly common, especially if the lug nuts were torqued with the car on the ground (which is often necessary.). Because of this, it is pretty common to find loose lug nuts after a wheel has been reinstalled, and it is standard procedure to re-torque the lug nuts after 50 and 100 miles. TLDR: The lug nuts are supposed to be re-torqued after driving, and depending on how far you went the shop may not have done anything wrong

Don’t be to surprised. Years back I went to pick up a semi truck from a shop and they had actually installed the.’Budd’ type wheel on the drivers side steering axle inside out on its mounting hub. I scratched my head for a minute not believing what I was seeing, the steering tire was sticking out past the trucks fender supposedly good to go for me to drive away with.

When I was 16, in 1979, every teen was a gearhead or wanted to be. We worked at gas stations, tire stores, you name it. Cars were all we cared about and we learned right. DAMN, common sense and looking at how something comes off should clue you as to how it goes back on, specially a lug nut. Maybe this is why VW uses lug bolts.....

I worked at Kmart auto doing oil changes, tune ups, and tires.. for 2 years before moving on to Boeing which I retired at in 2016 with 35 years. Kmart had other mechanics that did brakes and front end suspensions, exhaust, front end alignments.. I became a very good mechanic and to this day I still do all my own work on my vehicles. I also work on families cars, and some neighbors.. just to help them out.

Seconds before heard a loud series of pops. Was the six lug bolts snapping. A bystander on the road saw the brake drum sail across the hood of a prius. Thankfully noone was hurt.

Worst case I have to convert the back to 9 inch or convert to disc brakes. Gives me a chance to drive my old International pickup though.

I'm surprised there isn't a collar on it where the pan head is. I will admit I accidentally left the lug nuts on one of my wife's tires hand tight as I got distracted when I was rotating her tires. She drove to work then it started to wobble really bad so I went to her work and found the tire was loose as the nuts backed off a little. Thankfully it didn't chew the rim, hub, or lug studs so we both got lucky for no damage or an accident.

My sister took her old Dodge Dart in for new axle bearings. The left axle had left-handed threads on the lug bolts. When they re-installed the axles, they swapped them, so that the right side now had the left-handed lug bolts. Chrysler was one of the few that did that.
@ldnwholesale8552

That does not work, Darts are the same as Aussie Valiants and they have different length axles and they cannot be put back in the wrong side. Those l/h thread nuts are a pain at times. Plus I had one with 3 l/h thread studs and 2 r/h ones which of course I was trying to undo the wrong way. Alloy wheels as well. I shone the light in then discovered the 2 r/h thread ones and then the wheels came off.

She asked to have her tire fixed as it had a flat, after haven taken it to another shop to have a flat on the same tire fixed. So like always I aired the tire up to find the leak while she waited, then broke the bead and removed the tire to patch the tire that’s when I noticed the patch it had on it did not look right. I pulled the patch off with my bare hand, only to notice steel belt showing then asked the customer to follow me into the service bay to show her what I saw. I tried another patch, a plug patch, and a plane old plug could not get anything to hold told her I could not fix it then loaded the tire and the rim into her truck so she could get her tire the other shop ruined replaced.

The angle on those Lugnuts are supposed to match the angles on the rim which will self center the holes on the rims with the lug screws. That was the major part of the out of Balance plus it was insanely dangerous because those lug nuts will come loose without the extra bearing surface on the nut to the rim contact.

I bought a used car from a Chevrolet dealership in Houston a long time ago. I had their shop turn the disc brake rotors and replace the brake pads, and replace the front wheel bearings and ball joints before I picked it up. When I picked up the car the brake stone shields were bent and rubbing against the rotors and the front wheel lug nuts were installed backwards. When I showed this to the service manager he told me to take it up with the mechanic that worked on the car. The mechanic immediately became belligerent. He accused me of trying to burn him and threatened me. The service manager just stood there watching. The service manager didn’t offer to have the shields straightened, reinstall the lug nuts, or have the brakes, bearings and ball joints checked. All the service manager did was tell me to leave. I ended up driving to a parking lot and fixing shields and lug nuts myself. Next day I had another shop inspect the all the front end work and check over the whole car for anything else that might need to be repaired or replaced. I have no idea why the mechanic did this or why the service manager was so unconcerned and rude to me. I had never met any of these people before. I had never done business with the dealership before.

You missed an opportunity to discuss the fact there are also different styles of luge nuts such as spherical/ball & conical/tapered. I went to a local shop, thought to be reputable, and was getting snow wheels & tires for my SUV. I could only watch from outside the bay. As the mechanic was putting on the left front, he made the comment: “that will get you out of here”. I thought odd? About then a second mechanic comes up, starts working on Right rear. First he asks the other mechanic, which holes are you using? (2 types in the wheel, but only spherical fit my car). Turns out the first mechanic was fitting conical lug bolts into the spherical holes & going to send me out that way!! Very dangerous! Glad the second mechanic was safety aware.

Everybody's got to learn and someone has to teach them but it says something about the supervision if they miss basic items like this. ...Then, I remember when over tightening lug nuts on mid sixty's Mopars when trying to take a left wheel off was a thing..

Bit surprised car owner didn't have "his buddy" put some pigeon dropping welds on each lugnut in an attempt to fix the wobble. Can't fix stupid even with gorilla tape.

This happened to me in the 80’s I lended a friend my ‘67 Falcon Sports Coupe for his mechanics class at school as he did not own a car. Long story short, my front right wheel fell off the next day, luckily I was driving slow and no one hurt.

I saw a tube type tire that had come in for a balance problem. Someone doing a tire repair had left a flashlight between the tire and tube.

One of the lugnuts is a closed ended type so you have to put it on the right way. You would think it would have given them a clue as to which side goes first?

Ive.seen them put on backwards and run until the wheels were wallowed out and.the lugs worn through the complaint was not a noise or vibration it was that lugnuts were missing stud were breaking completely

If it was only on one wheel, Maybe the car owner did it. Maybe they had a flat. Had somebody pick them up and take them to a shop to get the flat fixed. Brought the tire back and put the Lugnuts on themselves. Not mechanics. Just a normal person who doesn’t know anything about cars. I love your videos by the way.

I’m sure you know that old adage: if you want it cheap and fast, it won’t be good. If you want it good and cheap, it won’t be fast. If you want it good and fast, it won’t be cheap…and sometimes like in this case it’s none of the above.

This should be reported to the local Better Business Bureau. Also, the shop that did the work is liable for any accident caused by this--absolutely dangerous.

Unfortunately it doesn’t surprise me. I do most of my own work, but things like wheel alignments and tires I have to take it somewhere. When I get it home I look to see if there are fresh marks on the front end to see if they actually put a wrench on anything. Also, with tires, check psi and wheel torque. I’ve found them way off. 70 psi once in one tire, loose lug nuts another time, stud broken off another time.

Didn't Crager wheels have an oblong spacer and special lug nut to adapt the wheel to different lug patterns? I never changed one but I can see where the same problem could occur.

Ugh, those 3 out of 4 are aftermarket replacement lug nuts... Except the one that seems to be a capped nut 0:43 My Altima has that darn 2 piece design that will eventually rust jack between that dumb beauty cover and the solid light nut Time to shop for newer one piece lugs & scrap/sell the old ones 😅 But this is almost as bad when someone puts on the brake pads backwards and goes metal to metal to ruin the new rotors as well😅
