That was also the whole point of the Rocky movies. The fight itself is just training put to the test, and training is a team sport. The community aspect and lifelong training is also very present in the Bruce Lee movies, that's why I love them so much.

Wow when you said, "getting older is a gift; a gift not everybody gets", that was a real revelation for me. Been kind of going through a midlife crisis thing lately, looking back at my youth and longing to be young again, but I never looked at aging the way you so eloquently put it. That really put things in a better perspective for me, thanks Ramsey!

Unfortunately that point was further augmented this weekend by the regrettable news of Kobe Bryant, along with his teenage daughter's untimely passing. Twenty year career as an LA Laker; two time Olympic gold medallist; five NBA championships; father of four;gone at 41. May he rest in peace.

This young fellow has more openness and honesty than I did at his age. Back then I was all false self, was incapable of saying what he said in his letter. That internal integrity, coupled with access to counsel through this medium can take him far.

The best thing I learned when I was training in Jeet Kune Do was, and I'm paraphrasing, "I can't be Bruce Lee or this other guy with great skill, I can only be me, so I have to be the best me I can be." I use that in everything that I do, be it BJJ or my art, music, even work, that's the best lesson I learned. I hope this kid learns this.

Hey kid, i hope you read this message. When i was your age i struggled a lot, i was poor, weak and ugly and almost nobody wanted to be my friend. At school was even worse since i was in love with a classmate and obviously it was a dead end route. Other people mocked me, i even got in a couple of fights and i was lucky enough to get out without a scratch, the most brutal one ended in the ground. Well, i think i deserved it because the other kid was the one i scarred for life in the face with my keys in a previous fight, but that was 2 against me. After that i tried to avoid the area where the fight happened fearing an aggression. And that's where i got stuck: Fear. I had no one who believed in me, i was alone, therefore i've never developed vital skills for that age. I'm still struggling every day because the problems of the period dragged along with the new problems. I was alone, you aren't. We, as a community, support you. If you want to learn a martial art you're welcome, you can write here and find friends willing to teach you, to share their experiences, to guide you even with the problems of your life. You are not alone.

@@Surteronarto That's not true. In the USA, there are more options than ever for sports on a high school level. The problem is wrestling is too tough for most people. This kid would be able to train in a martial art for free and have sparring partners but he'd actually have to test himself and work hard and get out of his fantasyland.

Bruce Lee learned the rules before he figured out how to break them. His skill was built on that mastery. There are no shortcuts. When you know nothing, even a child's teaching has value. But one should also know why one wants to train - and make sure it's for good reasons. Bruce Lee would not have stood a chance against my Nana in her Buick. There are other reasons to train than to be invulnerable. Sterling advice in this presentation RD! Never heard it put that way before. Spot on!

back when i was a kid i didn't have a lot of friends either, always found making friends hard. anyway, back then i studied books, used furniture for weights, etc., studied how to do this and that, and practiced everyday. i only picked the realistic moves i thought might come in handy. you'd be surprised just how useful it was and soon if someone picked a fight with me, i didn't have a problem making them regret it. i practicing everything, exercised, and persistence paid off as the moves became muscle memory. never needed someone else to practice, in fact i never considered it since i'd get enough practice just defending myself, that and i came to like the challenges. biggest thing i eventually learned is attitude when i got older. someone picked on me i just didn't react or let anything show that it bothered me, sometimes even let a slight smile go at the right time. well unless i got mad anyway. you'd be surprised just how many people will change their minds when they discover it doesn't bother you and they can't intimidate you. but usually having a reputation of not taking crap can help too. never let them mentally get the best of you, if you let them then the battle is already lost.

The key to make friends is to be genuinely curious and interested about everything in life. Gotta get experience from others to add wisdom and knowledge to your own. In return of getting interested to others passions, you can talk about yours and that's how healthy discussions and friends are made. I used to have no friends thoughout almost all the time I was in school, but once I got out, being a hard worker who respects others and who's interested in all kind of things helped me make friends with so much ease compared to the past it's frightening. Don't lick anyone's boots or be passive though, but be curious of others, of different activities and be respectful, not only will you have friends but if you do it right they won't be complete douchebags either. Also love yourself, it will never be said enough, and if you can't, give yourself reasons to be proud of yourself.

This story reminds me of something I've taken on board, and found to be true in all areas: A good teacher has forgotten more than they will ever teach their students. A great teacher helps their students to learn more than that teacher will ever know. The best teacher is one whose students surpass them. It doesn't matter if that's in academic or physical aspects.

This was incredibly inspiring to me as a young martial artist (not high school like the person who asked this question, but still early 20s) I want to eventually teach martial arts, but I also love fighting and competing with other martial artists. But whenever I think about teaching people, I always think of how much better I have to get before I can call myself a worthwhile instructor, and while it's exciting to know how much room there is to improve, it can also seem like an impossible mountain to climb at times, so I was really encouraged by your answer to this question.

This is a wonderful video. Bruce Lee is my primary hero. I learned a lot from his philosophy, including thinking for myself, taking what works and throwing away what doesn't, and being your own person, and not falling into traps of tradition. I utilize his concept of JKD for my entire life, creating myself in my own image and editing the image to my own likings. Your points on the potential that we all have with the information available to us are so very true. Having said that, I must say that Bruce Lee isn't the only person who has motivated me. I've always loved martial arts, despite my limited experience with them, I always knew that eventually I'll have to get into it. You are the one who has tipped the scales in my motivation that is leading me into this inevitable slide towards martial arts and fitness. Thank you for your informative videos and your motivation. I have a lot of respect for you and credit you for finally 'pushing' me in the right direction. I have plenty of experience with fitness in my life, starting with the Army, later in my interest in bodybuilding, which led to continuous interest and research into fitness and nutrition, even when I wasn't practicing it. My fitness and martial arts aspirations have long been foiled for many many years by my personal problems such as drug addiction, getting involved with the Russian Mafia, then prison. Now that I am free and find myself in a situation that with very likely allow me to train at a place that teaches primarily JKD+BJJ+Muai Thai, with a focus on functionality. I will take the necessary steps to make this happen and will continue to watch your videos. Thank you again.

wow, thats a really motivating video! i am currently studying at university for becoming a teacher, and i hope that when i finish my studies i can talk as clearly and thoughtful like you do. could you give some tips for improving speech/overall appearence when talking? i guess you can give many tips about this, since you said you also had troubles with speaking. thanks in advance

Ramsey you are a good person with the right karma, your words help a lot of people and Martial Arts and MMA are just a path through which you help people, keep up the good work, hope you get your shoulder healed soon. A truly good heart person that also practices MMA. Look at the horizon, that injury in that fight that moved you out of professional MMA took you to a path that have benefited so many with your advise and words.

That kid's gonna dominate life. And I pray with all my heart that he reads the other comments backing my beliefs as well. Life can be treacherous, but you can and will be a conqueror my brother, know your worth has no pricetag and you're meant to be great. Side note, every time your videos auto play I think it went to a mind smash video, Haha. Love your work and uploads though bro. I think it's time I start uploading more of my own. God bless.

You are one badass dude, and a major portion of that has nothing to do with martial prowess or experience. Appreciate you, and much respect!

Bruce Lee's interviews always paint him as such a personable and friendly guy. The kind of guy you would want to talk to, be friends with, work with, and train with. I wish he was still alive.

Wow. This is a touching video. Great job Ramsey! We have all felt some doubt in our lives especially in High School so I hope this young man stays focused and perhaps martial arts will allow for his self-confidence to grow and manifest itself. Asking people to spar or work out is a great way to make friends! Move over Dr Phil. Make way for Dr. Ramsey!
