Nice one Troy. Great tune, great album and Thomas is such a natural, musical player who isn't afraid to break a rule now and then. That bass sounds good too.

This has always been one of my favorite Bruce Thomas basslines. It really never stops moving around and all of those bends and slides make it really interesting. I've never even attempted to learn it since it always seemed impossible. Fantastic job!

Mark Michell over at the Low End University channel has recently discovered Bruce Thomas and Elvis Costello. I left comments there that Troy does a lot of Bruce Thomas covers. I hope he comes over here.

Bruce is a guy who wasn't on my bass radar screen until now. Probably due to the fact I'm not much of an EC fan...he put out a few songs that I really like. The story of Bruce searching for a bass similar to the one he had stolen is sad and awesome at the same time. It motivated him to design one himself; then, he had it built to his specifications. Great fat P-Bass tone that most of us love. Nice job as usual, Troy!

Bruce was never on my radar when I was younger either. I knew and liked a couple of songs "Accidents Will Happen", "Oliver's Army", "Everyday I Write the Book"... but it wasn't until much more recently that I started really digging deeper into their catalog and I'm still amazed by some of the stuff I'm finding.

@TJH3113 - here's the thing I remember most about EC, which has now become an iconic piece of SNL history. Bruce is playing, but unfortunately the keyboards are too loud in the mix. You could cover this one!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/baCmiYGciJiKfNksi=XVuBqp8irwV0JEAB

"Because He Is A Sadist" 🤣 I was never a fan of note bending in that I never could duplicate those notes! I'm convinced either a person knows how to properly bend, or they just fake it and for me possibly break it too! I've always been a believer that Bass Players can play blues guitar too but had to chuckle at Bruce saying he got pretty good at the blues till he heard Peter Green (who was really gnarly in early Fleetwood Mac Days) and he stopped. We ALL know the talent Bruce has so it is charming to hear him downplay his talent too but we really are our own worst critic when we critique our own talents! Appreciate you as always Troy taking a few minutes to chat with us as we smile and chat and groove for a few! MOO From COW-lumbus, Ohio 👋

@@TJH3113 Oh just kidding around. I remember you’re friends with them, and in the notes you made along with one of your excellent CTD covers, you mentioned seeing them backstage and you brought them coffee. I guess they love coffee and you knew it. That was a couple yrs ago at least so I see how my attempt at humor was obtuse, to say the least!

@@michaelanthony9068 No worries, I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing anything. Actually, if you look through my "Community" posts, there is one with a picture of them actually holding up the coffees they'd bought. I clicked on this confused that I might hear "I'd Rather Be a Man" by the Alan Parsons Project. I still say the best produced and mixed Alan Parsons record is "Year of the Cat" by Al Stewart. Song was originally about an ambiguous accident/su1cide on UK TV called "At the Foot of the Stage". Record company said the song was too morbid for radio and that no one in the US cares about a dead guy in the UK. He had recently seen "Casablanca" and went to his GF's flat where he saw her Vietnamese Astrology book open to a chapter called The Year of the Cat. Not that complex a bass part, but tone is incredible. Flatwounds?

Ah, sorry about that. I'll have to check it out. I'll have to check that one out as well. I didn't know that Alan Parsons produced it. D'Addario EXL170's.

Troy, Great job as always. I don't think Bruce making you learn this is sadistic. But if he every makes you learn 'Shabby Doll', now that would be pure evil. Bruce described to me in an email what he's doing at the end as an aid to figuring it out. But I couldn't get my head around it.

@@TJH3113 In my quest to find the perfect Bass string, I came across Ernie Ball Cobalt. For me, I have always chased the Chris Squire tone from Roundabout. These strings are the closest I have come to that tone. Not sure how long they last because I just put them on my Ibanez TMB600 yesterday.

Troy... you continue to "kill it." Kill us softly! Funny - I saw this and thought, "Just PLEASE don't cover ' Pretty Words ' because I'm gonna cover it (bass/KZbin) in the next two weeks." Whoops - you did that one 3 months ago. Nooooooooooooooo

Hey man! I've been watching your bass covers for close to a decade now. Any time i want to learn a rush song on i just pull up one of your videos and try to copy what you do. Any chance you would return to rush and do a cover of secret touch? Another great bass song to cover would be flash of the blade by iron maiden. I saw you did wrathchild and was hoping for more maiden. Thanks for all the covers!
@TJH31134 ай бұрын
That's awesome! Thanks for letting me know. I tend to steer clear of the songs where Geddy plays his "Flamenco" technique. I just don't do it well... or at all. I'm not sure if "Secret Touch" is one of those songs, but I'll check it out. I do think I'll get back to some Rush at some point though. Maybe redo a few older covers and do a few "lesson" style videos. Iron Maiden is always a possibility, but I find him pretty difficult to cover.
