@@TheLucanicLord Here's me being a sort of pop-sociological analyst with zero education or experience: I think you'd find most of them have typical jobs, but nearly always live in small towns that rarely exceed a few thousand people, if that. They end up being cut off from society because, frankly, small town life CAN be enjoyable. It's certainly a kind of life that feels secure, is quiet usually, and far from anything that disturbs norms that have been baked into people's brains for years if not decades. The problem with all that, though, is that rumors start to spread through these insular towns, the outside world starts to increasingly look insane, there's no exposure to positivity because news only ever really reports on crime, death, destruction, and the church bake sale. They see jobs leave because execs in a big city far away wanted to save $0.30 in order to get the $10m annual bonus dangled in front of them by similarly untaxed urban investors, police and fire become the only sure-thing jobs that pay, are unionized, and can exert direct control whenever and wherever necessary locally. They see poorer neighors lining up at church food lines because bread and eggs have shot up due to corporate greed. And along comes America's worst person ever spouting his opinions about literally everything in America supposedly being backward and criminal, and talking like their town's "salty" brash loudmouth about how the kids are undisciplined, the teachers are indoctrinating them even though the town has 52 churches and 2 schools, and the government is going to invade and enslave them next week...oh and btw, he'll be making a guest appearance on 3 of the local AM hate radio shows because he's a man of the people. However, a certain fraction, about one in six, of new homeowners were completely unrealistic, deranged and delusional regarding their expectations of perfection in their new homes. It turns out that this proportion of crazy clients, one in six, was exactly the proportion that the contracting board had warned my employer to expect when he first became licensed. Trump tries to claim he got 75 million votes - more than any other president, when he got 74.2 million and actually only squeaked in through the electoral college cuz he lost the popular vote by 7 million when he took office. There are inherently undemocratic policies and systems that are fundamental parts of American society so every vote counts - but somehow some votes count more. So having such ignorant, gullible people with no capacity for critical thinking and no desire to think for themselves still have a say in how the nation is governed - and some having a biased advantage over other people's decisions on how the nation is governed - should be at least as terrifying if not more than her owning a gun. So I grew up and lived out in the woods of a mostly rural purple state for most of my life. Knew my neighbors, knew their opinions, even if you were opposed it didn't really matter other than thinking people were silly or dumb. There were definite, specific local psychos that everyone, regardless of politics, knew about. But they were more like, the village idiot, and few and far between. Then I moved out of state for work and family, ended up in the suburbs, and suddenly I'm surrounded by whackjobs that are afraid of their own shadows, cowering behind white picket fences in monochrome neighborhoods. This lady is like if you asked me to make a caricature of the shift in neighbors I've experienced over the years. 😮💨

As someone who grew up in Illinois and now lives in Michigan, I find this state’s politics fascinating. I thought Illinois was weird with the seeming disconnect between the blue representative status and seemingly red culture. Michigan has the same dynamics, but instead of the clean divide between populous blue Cook county and the rest of the red rural counties (I know in the last decade that Illinois has turned bluer down south), the red and blue is all diffused. With the exception of some towns and cities that really swing hard one way or the other, you’re liable to see both pride flags and trump flags just about anywhere. It’s actually incredible our representation is so blue when the state is so heterogeneously deeply purple seeming on a street level.

Listen you guys - don’t make assumptions about Michigan - we have our crazies just like everywhere else but there are some rational intelligent people here as well. There are a lot of what I considered respectable hard-working Repubs who are very quiet right now, not converted but they know what happened and no longer follow Trump. I will say that I have felt a shift toward the good but there are still people falling back into the anti-vax and many have never deserted Trump. I now think they’re lifers & everything is a conspiracy. So we have a LOT of rural in our state and that seems to be where this grows and flourishes - it is ignorant self-righteous people in less populated areas where the social life is so much more limited. These people seem like 1/6ers to me. I have family members who own a business and from what I can tell, took Covid money and they are still spending it - I can’t figure it out but I’ve always been told by them that they have no retirement savings, they they will sell when it’s time to retire. I can’t figure it out but it is thousands and thousands of dollars being spent on home & property. I wish I could figure it out. If I were nearing retirement age I sure would not be spending some kind of windfall on updating my home. It was said the money “has to be spent.” 🤷♂️

That whole thing about saying this land was empty was actually the first 'Big Lie' in America. Their big claim was that it was kinda miraculous - they had found, "A land with no people for a people with no land." Cuz the British have a long history of being the judge of who qualifies as 'people', if they in their hubris decided that the population of any lands were 'savages' that it was their right at the very least to claim those lands as their own, and worse they often felt it was their duty to bring 'civilizstion' to them so they could rise up and maybe one day be able to qualify as 'people'. Of course they brought great destruction and essentially destroyed the Garden of Eden in their quest to colonize it and now we frequently see modern science catching up with ancient Indigenous knowledge that was concretely cemented into the very essence of the societies they decimated. Colonialism has long thought of this planet as God's great gift to them that will forever sustain them, we knew that these lands could forever sustain us - as long as we forever sustained it. All across Turtle Island in every First Nation society we held the divinity of Nature and Balance (much like the Druids of Britain once understood before the church wiped them out) and our highest law in every tribe - with no grand council handing it down, it was just a fundamental part of us and our connection to these lands - was the law of fourteen generations. No major decisions could be made without considering how it would impact the last 7 generations and the next 7. There was no kicking problems under the rug to let our great grandchildren deal with or blissfully being willingly ignorant of the ramifications of our actions just because those problems won't happen for hundreds of years. Our understanding wasn't that we inherited the Earth from our parents - we borrowed it from our children. And for that we were deemed savages unworthy of the land we had been the stewards of for thousands of years, not even worthy of the title of 'people'. (Fun fact, 2 of my ancestries held a hubris similar - though less devastating - as the British did in the sense that we not only thought of ourselves as people but Inuit and Haida both mean The People. We just didn't think it gave us the right to commit genocides and force others to live our ways, though our fundamental beliefs weren't beliefs but understandings every society had differences but we wouldn't rob them of their language or tell them their stories of the Raven and the Frog were wrong, we just let them be Other People who were allowed their own histories and customs).
