You'll Never Think of Crankbaits the Same - Hear and See Subtle Differences

Understanding the subtle differences in crankbaits and what they do is important. Too often we tie on a hard bait and rarely try another one if it fails to get bites. Adjusting crankbait selection based on body style, sound, swimming action, etc., can turn inactive bass into fish that react and eat. See some crankbaits in super slow-motion as well as listen to them to figure out the subtle differences.

Deep fish are getting hammered more now than I've ever seen in 53 years. No one used to fish deep with the exception of a few highly skilled anglers . Sure do miss those old days

Same here. Technology has made it too easy. GPS and GPS mapping especially. A lot of virgin deep spots years ago that you had to use a paper map and triangulate and do a lot of zig zagging in your boat with 2D sonar. I’m still only running 2D. I’ve been fishing over 50 years also and guided. Most people were too lazy to look a long time to find those sweet spots.

Happy 4Th to you, your family, and all my SRO brothers and sisters here.. Great timing this has been on my mind since when it came up about the old shadraps. I had NO CLUE the hardware on rattleless lures chirped so much! And I do believe that less is more on super high pressure waters here in general, so maybe the much lower low end volume is a good thing for me. I do wish I could have heard the low end audio on them all though my cans. Maybe an AI filter can bring it up a hair and make it available to all you subscribers. What's a few more hour of production time, right? LOL

Thanks, Steve. I knew 'silent' versions still made noise but was surprised to see just how loud it still was. Have you tried using the 'braid split ring' method to reduce the sound even more? I'd be interested in how much difference it would make using zero metal split rings.

I love throwing Crankbaits Steve. Over the years, I have built my arsenal and have both silent and rattling baits. This footage kind of keyed me in on what I may need to do if I'm not getting bit on one particular brand. I may need to change it up a little. Like you said, the wobble and the color play a role also. Thanks Steve and happy 4th of July!

Happy 4th to you as well! I have tried hard in recent years to adjust crankbaits like I would other lures, like soft plastics, to really get dialed in. Reminds me of the days when hard baits were not all the same out of the package and you found one that was gold. Then I was scared to throw it afraid I would lose it. Lol

I was just thinking about this. It’s wild because this is something I’m thinking about while on the water too. Even little things like creaking when I’m shifting around in my kayak.
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors Ай бұрын
I agree. The deck of my boat creaks a lot when I move on it and some days I try to get myself in a good position to fish and not move much. Especially on those really calm and slick days.

I've never heard a live baitfish rattle. I have had days when the only thing I could catch a fish on was a spoon with a fixed hook, no rattles, and no hooks on split rings to make noise.

I accidentally stumbled on silent cranks when I started catching a few bigs on em two years ago. What I would like to test is how action effects bites in the summer. The rule with soft plastics is longer flowy presentations work in the summer and tighter wiggles work in winter. I wonder if the same logic applies to crank actions. I got some progress with silent cranks in the dog days of summer. But last summer early September I switched to a Berkley gilly and worked it slow and I slammed em.

I believe bass are super smart! Some crank baits i cast, the dinks will attack it. But a big boy, or girl will follow it over and over, but won't strike it. 😎 🤔 🎣

Hey Steve can you catch bass on flat side crank baits in the summer months?
@SteveRogersOutdoors

Sure can. I like to use a flatter side bait on really pressured lakes to give off something different than what they have been getting hit with all summer.
