The sad thing is we need to share this with our doctors. Doctors have fewer than one week of nutritional education and during those 32 hours they don’t always grasp that the presence of cholesterol typically is more related to the damage done by sugar than it has anything to do with the fact that they ate the healthy fat that the brain and endocrine system requires. Having high levels of bad cholesterol in the system is not because you ate bad cholesterol that’s on TV commercials not in 30 years of modern science even if outdated “science” is called “the science.” Good doctors are humble doctors ready to learn and seek and practice the truth.

But you will definitely gunk up combustion chambers/pistons with carbon and your intake manifold & valves with carbon/oil buildup as well. Consequences from lack of redlining won't result in the death of anything. Just reduced performance and economy, maybe a misfire or two. If your engine died its due to lack of maintenance, probably oil.

Yeah because I have PCOS and insulin resistance I had to lose weight and when I cut all sugar out of my diet I didn't get cavities, binge eating pushes and I'm not prediabetic anymore, it's hard AF when sugar is absolutely everywhere and people feel like they need to get rid of all carbs when I stayed on a whole wheat everything from pasta to bread to tortillas, etc and no insulin spikes because of the fiber and I still lost weight.

Any time you hear "sugar" and "liver" in the same conversation, you should be asking about fructose. Glucose is metabolized throughout the body, fructose is metabolized only in the liver. In several papers, (such as Stanhope, et al., 2011) that have looked at this issue have found that production of LDL was impacted by fructose consumption - particularly by HFCS - but not by glucose consumption. Table sugar is 50% glucose and 50% fructose, so only half of that sugar is influencing LDL production. Unsurprisingly, we see a lot of the classic recommendations for low-cholesterol diets have low-fructose carbohydrates like oatmeal, potatoes, quinoa, almost every vegetable except for sweet peas, and surprisingly most fruit so long as you avoid drinking fruit juices - though any berries, bananas, and other lower-fructose fruits are better bets than apples, pears, cherries, watermelon, etc., but people rarely eat fruits to excess to see the same sort of fructose intake you see in cheap convenience foods. Sodas and most commercially produced foods use HFCS because it is cheap, but it is most likely the number one contributor to many of the diet-based health issues (such as atherosclerosis) we've seen in the past 50 years or so since it HFCS discovered. Kimber L. Stanhope, Andrew A. Bremer, Valentina Medici, Katsuyuki Nakajima, Yasuki Ito, Takamitsu Nakano, Guoxia Chen, Tak Hou Fong, Vivien Lee, Roseanne I. Menorca, Nancy L. Keim, Peter J. Havel, Consumption of Fructose and High Fructose Corn Syrup Increase Postprandial Triglycerides, LDL-Cholesterol, and Apolipoprotein-B in Young Men and Women, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, Volume 96, Issue 10, 1 October 2011, Pages E1596-E1605, doi.org/10.1210/jc.2011-1251

Omg it's disgusting how much sugar is in sodas and because it's liquid it is rapidly absorbed. I've seen on soda labels anywhere between 30 to 60 grams of sugar per soda! And I have patients who drink 6 a day everyday. Just from that one non-filling beverage habit they are having 350 grams of sugar. Of course they are diabetic and have poorly controlled diabetes including serious health issues. If I accidentally buy something with sugar in it (bc it's behind counter at a coffee shop and has to be handed to me so I can't read the label), I'll dump it and throw it in their recycling bin. I'm not drinking 50 grams of sugar, that's crazy. That exceeds my entire daily consumption by probably 2x

There was a recent ZOE podcast where they talked about cooking oils. Apparently what we want to avoid isn't necessarily seed oils, but instead cooking the oils past their smoke point for extended time or reusing them too much. There aren't really any "healthier oils." Avocado oil for instance offers literally no benefits over vegetable oil from a health perspective.
@dylanadams1455
@dylanadams1455 Жыл бұрын
@@NickCombs those vegetable oils are massively processed though, which denatures a bunch of the good stuff and adds lots of oxidants and other nasties. Anyone who follows a low carb diet is usually encouraged to eat fats that exist naturally with pretty minimal processing - butter, olive oil, coconut oil, etc.
@NickCombs
@NickCombs Жыл бұрын
@@dylanadams1455 You're right that less processed oils contain beneficial antioxidants, but the point was that cooking those types of less processed oils at high temperature is much worse. So ultimately it depends on how the food needs to be prepared and there is still a place for vegetable & seed oils. EV olive oil is certainly a better choice for a salad dressing.

The reason sugar is the preferred fuel is because its so harmful to the body. The body wants it out of the blood as fast as possible. The quickest way is to burn it first, before burning fat. Fat is easily stored for later. Sugar has to be turned to fat to be stored.

I think there is an overall issue with what we eat now and how these foods are preserved, "made safe" grown, and so on. I think we are lacking minerals and vitamins that foods normally carry due to the fields where crops and animal feed is grown have been depleted, which makes it necessary for chemical fertilizers. Which in turn causes weed growth and insects to show up. Then we dump insecticides and herbicides on these crops, which we then eat. I can attest food tastes different than what it tasted like when I was growing up on a Mennonite farm where there was none of this going on. I remember sitting in my grandparent's garden growing up helping weed or pick vegetables. I think I ate as many vegetables as I put in the bucket, wagon, or whatever. Grandma would just laugh and make comments about not worrying about my vegetable intake. The beef, chicken, and pork also tasted better because it was treated differently. They were all free-range, as far as hams and bacon they were all cured with regular salt and pepper and smoking. If you think bacon tastes great now, you should really try bacon made by Amish or Mennonites! To an extent, I do not think vegetable oils are a bad thing, but chemicals used to grow, protect, and harvest the said vegetables and then process and preserve them are, which is causing another shoulder-tapping prank. Wheat and other grains are no longer harvested the same way where they are bundled and left to ferment in the sun for a period of time. Which I believe is required for them to be good to eat now they drop roundup on the fields to kill the wheat to prevent clogging the combines, then they harvest it. There is just such a huge difference in how we treat things now.

I grew my own lettuce for the first time last year in a pesticide-free garden fertilized with buried rotten produce. First they took out fiber to make us able to eat more without feeling full (cookies were used as an example-used to be that old saying, "don't be going and spoiling your dinner with that cookie" because most people used whole wheat flours. By removing fiber, people can eat a whole container of cookies without feeling full-we just start feeling sick from the sugar).

Exaaaactly! Thank you! That's really interesting about the cookies, and probably indicates some serious lost knowledge after only, what, one or two generations? Food is WILDLY different now. The ultraprocessed ingredients are already evil by themselves, now think about who's using them and why! Stuff like refined sugar itself hasn't even existed for more than a couple hundred years! It's like plastic. Of course we like it but it's just not worth the trouble of having it around! And it's _always_ been and will _always_ continue to be a goddamn nightmare in the wise hands of market forces. Killing people so you can rip up their healthy land and grow ludicrous amounts of palm oil and shit is demonic. Sorry I'm getting heated lol. I think it's super cool and important (and healthy and delicious) to preserve traditional food practices of all cultures. Real old-school breads, "Three Sisters" planting, whatever. Historically healthy human diets are varied and diverse but a common thread is low sugar. And fruits, being fruits, are a seasonal thing no matter where you live! Getting everyone back to eating bread like in Bible times will take work, but hey, that bread is worth it. I've had the expensive Ezekiel's bread from the health food store lol, it's really good and you can freeze it and one loaf can last you a while. There's totally ways to get stuff like that going on a sustainable small community scale. Whatever can be done to bring a holistically healthier relationship with food is at least worth a chance. I want to get more people planting Three Sisters in my area.

My mother used to listen to her when I was young, so everything was fat and sodium free in our house. My mom would talk about how dangerous butter and coconut oil were, to the point where we couldn't eat anything with either in it. But sugar, that wasn't restricted. We had plenty of cookies and cakes and all the really delicious 80s and 90s snack foods (some of which I still crave to this day which haven't been for sale for decades). It took my mom time but she woke up to the food BS, actually not long after my grandmother died. You do an amazing job of breaking down complex subjects and building consensus for the material in a way that’s relatable and easy to understand. I’m 45 now but was fortunate enough in my early 20’s to have read William Duftys classic book “The Sugar Blues” first published in 1975. It changed my perspective on sugar and diet. I have been sugar free and very minimal on refined foods and sugars for the past 25 years as a result. People today are so fortunate to have content creators like yourself sharing information like this.

I believe, sugar is the drug of choice, for the masses. It IS addictive. The more you get, the more you want. You just Have to have it. That IS addiction.

I agree. There are a lot of things engineered to addict us to them, including processed foods and short videos like on TikTok - it's difficult nowadays to avoid addicting things.

You are correct. Perhaps the more people who have this insight, the more healthy food will be made easily available because folks will stop eating junk. But humans on the whole cannot resist immediate gratification. If we could, we'd cook more of our own food and save more of our money.

YOLO but when I was 11 I was diagnosed with a low grade brain tumor. After it was removed I craved sugar like it was going out of style. Cakes cookies candy soda ice cream sugar on my frosted flakes toast even packets of sugar I'd devoured without a second thought Funny I gained no weight BUT 10 months later the tumor had returned and it was the size of a grapefruit. So is sugar bad for you??? Hmmm I'll say...heck yeah!

amazing video. i've been doing my best to not consume most sugars for a while now, nearly two years i guess, and i feel better usually. in terms of carbs, i basically only eat like, sourdough bread and pasta. unfortunately i have a pretty restrictive diet due to medical conditions i have, so most foods are off the table for me. anything that isn't extremely plain can cause me problems, and if i'm not careful can end up killing me. still, i recommend not consuming artificial sugary foods to basically all of my friends at this point. those cannot be good for anyone.

Excess sugar causes a whole host of issues not just obesity, but saturated fat is the real culprit in atherosclerosis.

The real big dirty secret is that in the 80's and 90's we were blaming fats in general as the big bad boogeyman. So, there was a push to remove every ounce of fat from everything, problem being this made the food taste like the cardboard box it was wrapped in. Then to get people to eat the fat free food they started putting in tons of sugar by different names in the food. Of coarse we now that sugar is 1000 of times worse than the fat it was meant to replace, but there is no real push to stop adding sugar and leaving the fats for taste.

Also noticed that protein accelerates the release of "aging chemicals" which are important when you're a growing pre-adult, but not when you're much older. Just ask the Sardinians. They know plenty about this phenomenon.

I've explained this to my husband. He hears me but is a sugar addict. He's going to end up with type 2 diabetes. He claims he is cutting back but I took a sip of his coffee yesterday and only tasted sugar.
@johndoe7270

I had a harder time quitting sugar than both IV drugs and cigarettes. It's hard to quit. For me, its also the dang coffee. My dad died when I was 7. Coffee was something we both shared and enjoyed. I have spent nearly 30 years trying to figure out to make it taste like his. It requires sugar/milk/creamer and you develop a tolerance to sugar just like drugs and end up needing more and more sugar to taste it. Crazy huh? I wish you and your husband the best with conquering sugar and avoiding type 2.
