As much as I love Karlach, I DO recommend politely turning her down when she starts with the flirting. I'm not sure what the triggers for it are, but I was doing a playthrough where I wasn't romancing her, and when I turned her down, she started trying to give me really cliche one-liners about "more fish in the sea" kind of statements, but they were all terrible. And she literally starts heckling her own lines out loud in front of you and trying to recover the conversation, like a stage comic who knows they're bombing but try and pull it out of a tailspin. The lines are SO funny. If nothing else, save before you do it so you can just enjoy the lines, before quick loading so you can enjoy the one true romance in the game. That of Mama K.

But towards the end of the conversation she says, "I adore you, you know" and if you respond with "I... I prefer a silent protagonist. In fully voiced games, I find that the tone or expression of a dialog choice sounds so much different than I figured it would in my head. I agree that the facial animations are distracting, immersion breaking, and honestly... poorly animated. lol, it's funny how hard it was to do this, but I save scummed before you can tell her I love you, told her that, then told Lae'zel I wanted to be with her. If you do the same thing but with "I adore you" she gets mad, but you can still talk to her. After "I love you", it literally wouldn't let me start a conversation with her. Naturally I reloaded and stayed with the true peak waifu. Hell I started a whole new playthrough after killing Orin, because I found out I'd missed the romance option and didn't have a save from beforehand. 😅

I'm playing a wizard. I went with her to Avernus, because in my headcanon epilogue, it's not long surviving in a place like that before I'm level 17 and have access to Wish. That'll fix her right up if nothing else down there can. Then the next day, cast Gate to take us both back to Baldur's Gate, and we go have dinner with her old blacksmith friend, who makes Karlach godmother. And we live happily ever after. Even Larian can't convince me that's not how the ending happened.

I don’t play this game. But I just love how they leave in the quiet awkwardness after landing a line. The realism xx :) Most people we think are so cool, confident or suave are just good at hiding what they’re actually thinking / feeling. Everyone is a little awkward or a bit of an odd one.

I don’t care what anyone says, Karlach is the canonical love interest for the player character going on the good path. She’s just too much of a sweet goofball to not like and keep very close. I straight up cried upon seeing her giggle too, which told me I made the right choice.
