This is another subclass that would make a surprisingly terrifying villain. Everything's going well until suddenly all the Nobles who used to shower you with praise and riches are calling for your arrest. You manage to escape the guards and hide out with the party's favorite NPC, deciding to lay low until the heat dies down. He seems nervous. But that's normal in this situation, right? He offers to let you all get some rest while he keeps watch, and feeling exhausted, the party agrees. A couple hours later, you wake to find yourselves surrounded by guards with all your equipment missing. Suddenly, you see a well-dressed person step forward through the guards with a self-assured look. "Well, this is quite the predicament for you, isn't it? If you all want to avoid the gallows, then you're going to be working for me from now on. And don't worry about your equipment, I'll keep it safe."

I played a college of whispers bard and he became outright terrifying over the course of the campaign. He was absolutely brutal in combat encounters and was a musical whirlwind of death. I took the sharpshooter and crossbow expert feats so he could attack twice and add 50 damage to his attacks. Sharpshooter lets him add 10 damage at a -5 penalty to the roll with his ranged attacks thats on top of the additional damage he got from psychic blades. I also had a habit of coating my ammo with poisons and other things I would buy when we stopped in town for even more added damage. I used spells like faerie fire to give him and the entire party advantage on enemies and dipped some levels in rogue for cunning action and sneak attack. A lot of boss encounters got wrecked by this guy.

@@elijahhayter3026 The downside is he had low ac and would go down easily if enemies managed to close the distance. He nearly died a few times. Very much a glass cannon. The dm also made him a priority target in combat encounters. The big bads of that setting started to view him as a major threat. My character was a flamboyant half elf bard who always wore a silly costume like a jester or clown. He wore a comedy mask and played the fiddle. Keep in mind one of our party members was a forge cleric with absurdly high ac wielding a war hammer. We also had a divination wizard and a monk. The bard was still considered the biggest threat. Did I mention I took heat metal and would use barbed crossbow bolts that would stick out of enemies? So I could cast heat metal and deal damage over time if they survived his big damage attack.

The best thing about playing a College of Whispers Bard? You get to sing your favorite Bond theme as your Bardic Inspiration song. Out of nowhere you can just bust out into a rendition of "You Know My Name" by Chris Cornell and still be completely in character.

I haven’t had a chance to play yet, but I’m really hoping I do get to in the future, and now that I’ve watched this video, I realize I unintentionally rolled up James Bond, minus the dubious consent aspect, bc my guy is Not about that. The things you learn when you get someone else’s perspective, lol. Excellent video as always.

Absolutely love this subclass for evil characters that want to be subtle. Made a whispers bard a while back for a potential companion/npc, and he brought so much flavor to the campaign; gathering secrets, deceiving townspeople, and generally sowing discord. He ended up stealing the identity of the leader of the richest guild in the country, and is using his status to amass wealth, influence and information. Will definitely have to make a whispers bard again if I play another story-focused campaign.

I really love College of Whispers and mixing it with rogue, but I hate how everyone states that it is "just the rogue bard". As if swashbuckler isn't just the bard rogue XD. You know what, fuck it: I'm going swashbuckler college of swords and nobody can stop me
@magegod9894 ай бұрын
Swashbuckler is great on a swords bard extra skills and expertise, cunning actions, 2d6 sneak attack, and a boost to initiative as well as a free disengage after hitting something. I personally wouldn't go more then 3 in rogue and after extra attack at bard 6.
@demonderpz79374 ай бұрын
@@magegod989 My personal intent would be to start it off with 3 levels into rogue cuz base rogue gets better saving throws, proficiencies, and one more skill. Then I'd go the rest in swords bard. I acknowledge how integral extra attack is and all, but ngl the first 3 levels of rogue are a banger

The sad thing is this subclass has the right ingredients to offer a very cool backstory for your OC with a ton of flavour (and for a Bard Subclass that bucks the trends that you'd associate with a bard), only to discover it can be very situational in very specific campaigns that are not combat-heavy. I eventually discovered that running an Eloquence Bard with Soul Knife Rouge as a multi-class was the better combo, for you can deal psychic damage and can come off as unnervingly charming to the poor sap who has unfortunately crossed paths with your character. Pointy Hat even posted a video critiquing the College of Whispers Bard, and his homebrew 'College of Lies' Bard subclass is something I wouldn't mind running in a future campaign. It repurposed the class to focus more on lies, subterfuge, illusions, and charms that shines in high-stakes social interactions, but that can be useful in other scenarios in a pinch.

I'd love the idea to play a college of Whispers bard but perhaps even work more like an interesting blend of Bard and Warlock what's a bit of the way warlock if you asked me should work being that your spells cost health to cast rather than having spell slots so the limit isn't the number of spell slots you have but rather the amount of your own life force you're willing to give for that power and then basically playing almost akin to like a natural born child of a devil and either a human or whatever other race you want to mix it with who has the innate ability to use the same magic as the devils and who's us has their greatest strength being in making deals and controlling the minds of those around them with rather than singing or playing an instrument, you weave together your words into deals you make with others Souls directly rather than even them consciously themselves....

Knock destroys stealth. I'll never recommend this spell for a subtefurge type character xD
@haku81354 ай бұрын
Most of the time you can just, pick the lock. But for those rare times where lockpicks aren't enough, having a silence spell up your sleeve would make knock a VERY useful spell. You can actually use it very effectively in stealth, because it can target something up to 60 feet away. So you can redirect attention to somewhere else in a wide area really easily. Of course if you can get to a location that's far away from other people, you can just cast knock regardless. Plus Knock actually will work on way more than just locks, it can LIFT things away from a door causing it to be STUCK or barring it. It's actually kinda insane when you realize the true scope of what it can do. An old trap door that's been rusted shut for decades, will just pop open. Shut it behind you and good luck to anyone trying to chase you after hearing the noise. Knock is a VERY powerful spell if you're clever about its use.
