I get this is for a meeting room conference machine, but a screen (or touchscreen) can be really helpful in a small home server, since you won’t need to wire up a monitor or a portable USB-C display

you would think so, but i have such a 10" screen from aliexpress and i use it to show obs and chat - great. BUT! you can't really control anything with it, because if you touch the screen, the cursor is transported there and also it steals focus from the game. so ultimately, i had to disconnect the touch portion (it's another usb cable) because it even activated when my cat leaned on it
@pvtpain66k3 ай бұрын
this seems like it would be great for your older family member who sort of gets tech. acceptable system for someone who doesn't really game, and understands enough about computers for you to walk them through most problems. The screen seems great for that.
@L33tSkE3t3 ай бұрын
Yeah, when looking for a computer for my 86 year old Nana, I looked at similar systems as well as some all in ones but, ended up just getting her an iPad with a nice Logitech keyboard w/ trackpad and it seems to work for her. She was already familiar with iOS and had an iPad previously. Now she has the iPad as her main computing system for email, entertainment, navigating websites to pay bills etc as well as an iPhone 13 Pro and now she has taught herself how to use it to take pretty good pictures by watching tutorials on KZbin. We also got her an Apple Watch for peace of mind with its fall detection and being able to have something capable of communication on her at all times. We even got her a Google Nest Doorbell and a 7in Nest Hub to use as a security display for the doorbell camera along with regular music streaming etc. So I no longer accept old people saying that they can’t use technology and need someone to do it for them. If my Nana, who was born in 1938 before the invention of the transistor, can figure it out, so can anyone else with some help.

I would love for this thing to have an atom-N305(the 8 core) and then use this as a wall mouunted smart home thermostat hub security camera thing. (edit, for clarification, i dont plan on using the camera on this device, just a central hub for NVR, and simple home monitoring maybe integrate something like grafana) Run something like ispy or frigate and then when it detects a person or car coming up the driveway, or a deer, bear, or mountain lion in the back yard it switches the screen to a live view of the camera. When the event is done, switch back to house stats like internal/external temp, humidity and air quality, with quick ways to swipe through screens that have forecasts, storage stats, maybe a way to hook into whole home audio. Now, probably smarter to just have something rack mounted and use a tablet to interface with it, but i like the idea of having descrete devices that do their thing, and then sync back to a file server for on-site redundancy.
@slavb0i6463 ай бұрын
seems like a super overpowered security camera, your best off just using dedicated security cameras that are POE and have some detection in them. don't buy or promote e-waste like cheap atom chips. its not good for the environment or your pocket In the long term.
@denvera1g13 ай бұрын
@@slavb0i646 Not the camera on this thing, the POE cameras i already have. I want something like this for the screen on it. My Atom N100 can run 4x4K cameras. Well technically its my pair of 8K cameras that are really just 2x4k cameras stitched together internally on each camera for a near 180 degree field of view, but the N100 struggles some times while running plex media server at the same time. If the N100 can run these cameras+plex then an N305 with 2x the cores, and higher clocks should be able to run all of them and a screen when mounted to a wall where my thermostat is to give me more than just a thermostat, but actual temperature and humidity, inside and out, camera previews during object detection events, and forecast. Though i wouldnt be running plex on something like this as i'd want large redundant storage array. The N100 i'm building is for my sister's house where it will take in broadcast TV and record it while also running her security cameras for her kennel(she has more cameras than me but they're not 4K because they're pretty close to what they need to record). It will also act as my off site backup with 6x HDDS and 2x NVMe

A similar story, I was talking to my dad on the phone in 2009 - 2011, about a new monitor he purchased. The salesman told him his 24" monitor was an OLED. I asked my dad if he didn't mean that it has a LED backlight, but he assured me the salesman had told him each pixel was a LED.

I just got this yesterday. So far, it's interesting. The screen is a huge gimmick - clock is really obnoxious (and no 12H option), and the weather doesn't work. The camera is shockingly good, and Windows hello works crazy fast. The port management is a total PITA if you aren't using a dock. But it's pretty zippy all things considered and isn't super loud and annoying fan wise. Though the default curves are pretty sensitive to load.

Well I'm impressed by the WebCam it's certainly an interesting idea I was kind of hoping it was just a display I could see it being useful for applications where you might want to have like a control panel or something open but since it's not a secondary monitor there goes that idea.

The screws-under-feet crap is an RMA denial trick. The first thing any associate is likely trained to do is tug gently at the feet to see if the adhesive had been tampered with. Short of that, holes in the feet can be grounds for automatic denial. It's a warranty sticker without expressly claiming it's a warranty sticker.

Putting the I/O on the back would only make sense if the stand was built in. With them on the back it would REQUIRE the machine to be stood up. Just stick it in a drawer as a home server. It's a bit poopy that it doesn't simply work as a monitor though. That'd be much more useful for direct access for installing server things like remote desktops and ssh stuff.

This would be great if the mini screen worked like a Stream Deck which worked with Linux (Stream Deck does work in Linux). I would put the X7Ti off to the side and use it for one button functionality. My current mini PC is already on my desk wasting space. One thing annoying is that opening it to put in the hard drive and RAM kind of sucks, 😢. It would be nice to be able to step up the screen to shut off after awhile, and then let it activate on the first touch.

If you forget for a moment the unuseful touch screen, you should consider it's a i9 ultra with the ARC integrated graphic (way better than the Iris) AND... it's capable to drive 4 displays. Try to find - at the time I'm writing - another i9 UTLRA mini PC with four monitors... I mean, I just found the new Asus NUC with 2 usb4 and 2 HDMI... ok, but this AtomMan has got the best set up, giving you the chance to use even a display port. very scalable.... If the Miniforum would get rid of that touchscreen, lowering the price (about 100$), to me it would be the best deal. Note: the very annoying thing on my perspective is the NOISE! in a long pc session, you can feel the difference from a quiter (mini) pc. So MiniForum, get rid of the unworthy touch screen and spend that money on having a more efficient cooler system! ;--)
