I went for the gamevice flex. For one its designed to fit phones WITH cases, which is how most people actually use their phones... For two, it has headphone jack and full sized analogue sticks. Price is the same but you get more "hardware" bang for your buck. No stupid subscription. One thing that you didnt try and Backbone has that no other controller has is CALL OF DUTY MOBILE support! . Codm on Android has only worked with official Sony or Microsoft controller. Back bone is supposed to be the first one that support it. Thats a big upperhand if you are a fan of that game. I use Android controller for emulation so idgaf

Interesting, I didn't know that about Backbone One and CoD Mobile, I don't play much CoD tbh. So I'm keeping your comment pinned so that people interested in this controller can see this. It sucks for the subscription because Backbone One is genuinely a GREAT product but riding on success shouldn't be an indicator of jumping into predatory practices that your market have no business in... A controller with a subscription, who woulda thunk... And then, they could argue that they provide great software and the subscription is about that, and they wouldn't be wrong but no one asked them lol.... People want a great controller first and foremost, which it is (though pricey). Anyway, I'm mitigated cause I love the product, I just feel like 2-3 big shot sat in a room and thought they hit the jackpot with this superb idea of introducing a subscription... 3:05 The app is my biggest issue with Backbone - $59 annual subscription and they aren't upfront about it. Android app being behind at the game price, ouch. Thanks for clearing things up and warning those interested. It's such a shame, because the 3.5mm jack is a good step forward.

Great review, definitely not a glorified product ad, really appreciate it. I kind of purchased one on impulse already. You didn't really touch on three points that I kind of just considered to be obvious in my impulse purchase though. 1. Did you by chance try any emulator software? Is it just detected like any other controller in most apps that support controllers? 2. Does one of the four bottom buttons function as a select button? it obviously has one to fill start, but what about the one to fill the select button? is it on a per app basis? seems like 2 social function buttons, 1 backbone app launcher, and start 3. Does it allow you to map buttons and sticks to certain regions of the screen like many mobile phone controllers do? Ultimately looking like I might cancel my order if it doesn't clear at least 2/3 of those. It seems much more focused on creating a platform than a tool, which is great since mobile gaming is still missing a lot of core platform features for social play, but it's not really what I'm looking for, which is really disappointing since it seems like this device is gonna have the most developer commitment to updates and product support. But they're committed to something I'm not looking for.

Thanks for the comments, for 1. you see a segment of me playing Drastic the DS Emulator but really, every emulator works just fine. 2, The three dot is select but if you double tap it, it mutes yourself in a party but that doesn't work in Android right now, the square is to capture videos and photos, the orange is to step in and out of Backbone and the three horizontal lines is Start. If there is any more hidden features, I'm unaware. 3, not at this point in time, that's part of the discrepancies in software that I was hinting out but I'm also unsure at this point if this will ever come out, and when it does, will it be by default or behind a paywall. They did improve features of the controller through software over time, very little but they did. Cheers!

I got this controller a couple of weeks ago. I didn't even care about the software or streaming, just thought it looked good to play emulators with my phone. Turns out I returned it. I found the face buttons too small and too close to the analog (which was bothering me a lot). Not to mention that they sound VERY clicky. For now, I'm just using my PS5 controller for that instead.

They are not for everyone. By the way, if for any reason you feel like double dipping in the future, get the Sony branded version, that one works on Android with Remote Play.

I'm a bit confused on what i should get. I use Redmi note 10 pro. The Backbone app is like the only app to have positive reviews while all of the other apps have negative reviews. But the Backbone does not support cases which is a huge bummer considering fact that I don't like removing my case, but at the same time I do want controller. And me having controller would make it easier to play Minecraft and emulators that do support controller on it and I'll be able to play cloud gaming. The question is what should I get?

I've since bought many more controllers. I was pleasantly surprised with the MOGA XP7-X but it also has a bulkier footprint. Otherwise, the Backbone One is still the best "slim" controller in my opinion, though get the Playstation version if you haven't since that one supports the PS Remote Play app.

Can anybody help? My backbone works fine with Xbox remote play. But when I unmute it, it disconnects from remote play after about 3 seconds every time, and I have to restart the app. Can anyone help? Thanks

If you are using a Backbone for Android, it is not supposed to work with the official remote play app. Backbone for iPhone on the other hand should. Which is it? If you are on Android, try looking in one of the two apps that I mention in this video, you'll be better off with one of the two and never run into these problems again.

8:40 how do you connect the backbone to a pc as a controller?

Simply plug a cable at the bottom of the right grip and onto your PC or handheld, that should do it, both for the Apple and Android version. However, Backbone does say that this feature is behind a paywall so I don't know if they need to unlock the hardware to do it first, if you've tried and it didn't work, it must be some wizardry on their end. @@bestonyoutube Great question, I tried and unfortunately no. If I had to guess, the logic board automatically transforms the second USB-C in a "charge only" input whenever the first USB-C is used to pass input data. I tried both USB-C and both gave me identical results, no data when plugged in.

​@@bestonyoutube I'd suggest giving it a try to make sure there is no misunderstanding but from my end, your request was very clear and indeed, data is not supported outside of the controller sending data to the phone. But the controller does not pass through data to the phone it's plugged with.

And If I may add, the recent model that Backbone One just release, the "Playstation Backbone One for Android" supports the native PS Remote Play app. That's a HUGE feature in my opinion.
