I saw it Friday, May 27th. As a veteran, I had no idea that the original Top Gun was such a touchstone for me. Remembering 23 year old Maverick and seeing 59 year old Maverick, really took me back through the last 36 years of my own life. Friends lost, heart aches, loves lost, watching children grow and doing great things, and striving to be a great mentor to those you are responsible for. Right in the feels.

Saw the original on SD base theater in 86', fresh out of boot camp. Fast fwd watched TG2 w/ wife of 25 yrs, and a lot of my generation was there as well, it was like the only different was my seat reclining and price's higher. Aerial action was better than , original, and they better not wait 35 yrs for next sequel. Cast was great and updated by today's standards. Will definitely see another enlistment boost like the 80's .

Just came back from the theatre to watch Top Gun: Maveric. The bar was really high from the first movie, and they did not disapoint. The movie is really good. There is nostalgia stuff from the first movie, the flying scenes are amazing. The story is really good and the actors did a great job. I was concerned about the sound track because the sound track from the first movie is one of the best I have ever heard in a movie.... well they re-used of a lot of it so it gives you that Star Wars kinda vibe from one movie to the next where the sound really complements what is going on visually. I think this movie is just as good as the first one and give it a 9/10. Go see it!

@@kwantoon It is its own script. Worth watching. There is a similar situation shared between Episode VI and TGM, but it isn't overwhelming. The P-51 is actually Tom's. He's owned it for years. They didn't use the F-35 because the Navy rejected the idea. It was their initial thought and ask when they were working on the script in 2018. But it actually worked out much better that they were allowed to use the F-18's for the reasons you mentioned.

In the real world, the US Navy would probably not have used the F-35Bs in such a suicide mission anyway. Considering they were expected to be shot down on the way back. I'm sure they wouldn't want any parts of the F35 hardware and components falling into enemy hands.

My dad was an aircraft electrician and crew chief at Skunkworks and the Black Hole in the 80s and 90s. I learned so much about aviation and aeronautics as a kid. I grew up knowing all the jets flying in and out of Mojave, Edwards and China Lake. Seeing "home" on the screen made me so much more immersed in the film. Now, I live in the PNW, and TGM filmed just down the road and in the Cascades I can see from my porch. Wow, just wow. This movie really is a love story to aviation and America. The Skunkworks logo on the Darkstar, the generator for the F14.... 2 days later and I'm still smiling.

No F-5E Tigers as Mig's ( i know didin't have access to MIGs in the cold war, except the one Foxbat but we gave it back ) but actual SU-57 s to take on as adversary's . very plausible given the global situations. But the Scene that broke me was when Maverick took his wings off his dress uniform and pinned it onto Ice mans coffin I just couldn't help my self the tears came and memories got jarred . Gotta love how the technology in making the aerial scenes possible, plus the sound effect is give me chills as well. Don't wanna reveal too much but the F-18s doesn't have that much on-screen energy/presence like the F-14s did in the first movie. Lastly dunno whether it is a good decision to not make the F-35s the main characters fighter jets by the Navy, it's still relatively new aircraft so keeping it a secret in a huge movie like this is vital.
@HammerRocks

The movie made a editing mistake in the beginning. They showed ultra close ups shots of an F-35B being attached to the catapult and being prepared for take-off, but then when the camera pans to a wide angle shot of the aircraft carrier, none of the first 4 planes immediately launched were F35s.🤔
@simonoconnor7759
@simonoconnor7759 2 жыл бұрын
Ramal, there are no 2 seat F-35's so it would be impossible to use them for this movie. Hammer Rocks - the carrier version is a F-35C. The B version is the VSTOL one that the marines use. I think that similar to the original movie, the flight deck scenes are just a montage to give you a feel for flight ops, not a single sequential take.
@HammerRocks
@HammerRocks 2 жыл бұрын
@@simonoconnor7759 That is correct, the F-35C is the carrier version. It's a typo at my end. It (F-35) being a single seater is I'm sure a major reason for not using then in the movie. But perhaps a greater reason is the fact that the F-35C only entered service with the US Navy on February 2019, after most of the principal filming for the movie has been completed. Besides a pilot and a WSO pairing, mirrored the 80's original with the F-14s. Their banter added to the dynamics of the engagement, IMO.

I saw the original TOP GUN on its opening day in 1986 and saw TOP GUN Maverick on its opening day last night. Seeing the original TOP GUN was go amazing for its time that it pushed me over the edge to join the Navy. I was a Red Shirt on the USS Kitty Hawk in flight deck ordnance and got to experience all of the things we saw in aircraft carrier flight deck scenes. I was on the deck while F-14's were still flying so I got to experience those bad ass machines as well. This said, they had a high bar to reach to get to the level of the original TOP GUN...and I think the did it! I don't think that it is arguable that the intensity of the flight scenes was amazing. It had a great mixture of humor and drama. I'm glad I saw it and I will see it again. WELL DONE!!!

@@JohnFourtyTwo I have watched some of his videos. He flew IN the F-14 as a RIO. He says he flew the F-14s while in the NAVY. Unless there is more to his career than being a back seater, he never FLEW the F-14. The pilot and RIO can not swap seats. The pilot can not do the RIO job and a RIO can not fly the aircraft. There are no flight controls in the back seat of a F-14. Yes he had his wings but he did not control the aircraft.

I think, at this point, those parts are probably being handmade. What I found to be a huge use of 'suspension of disbelief' was the P-51. It's pretty much the unobtanium of the private aviation world. But for the general public, if you enjoyed it, then more power too you. Have fun at the next Marvel installment too.

Even though I saw your video ‘after’ seeing the movie yesterday, it makes me appreciate it more…I am blown away how great the movie is …it even had this grown *ss man shed some tears…like you mentioned, I saw some of myself in some of the characters… For me, this is without a doubt, one of the best movies of his career. So much more respect for Tom. Ps. Liked and Subscribed…

Here the thing. It’s one of the greatest movie I’ve seen in a very long long time. From start to finish. As for not using the F-35. Well one it’s very expensive, two is ugly as sin, three the navy doesn’t want to give up anymore about what it can and can’t do. And finally the F-35 is still only aloud to do just 6 gs.

Why is Rooster still a Lieutenant at nearly 15 years in? Did Maverick kept him out of Annapolis for 8 to 10 years? Rooster looked to be about 4 to 5 years old in the photograph of him with his mom and dad in the original Top Gun. He should be at bare minimum a Lt. Commander or the Navy would have pushed him out around the 12 year mark... Other than that, I went to the first Dolby Surround showings I could find here in Vegas. I will be going back to see it in IMAX this coming Tuesday. So many memories of my Air Force brat childhood. The funeral had me quietly watering my beard as it brought back memories of me at 15 at the memorial service for the 10 air crew and 6 Combat Controllers (who might as well have been Blue Tail Flies by how much time they were in those C-130's). All of them were close enough to feel like we had lost flesh and blood family members. Then the missing man formation, this Marine is NOT embarrased to say he shed tears for our family...

Navy Officer Candidate School (OCS) applicants can now be commissioned no later than 32 years old (as of 2019). So, it's possible Miles Teller's Brad may have studied in a regular college and gone to OCS instead of Annapolis due to his admission to the prestigious academy being blocked by way of tragic family history

According to Ward Carroll who's a retired F-14 naval aviator, with a YT channel of the same name, has contacts inside Hollywood when he worked as a technical advisor on some movies, the main reason for not using the F-35 was because most of it is classified material so it was a no-go regardless if they had a 2-seat version or not. As for Maverick's age, if he graduated the Naval Academy at 22 like most do then he would've faced mandatory retirement at 52 when he hit his 30-year mark in the Navy which is as high as a Navy captain or any O-6 can go. If he could've gotten another promotion or two like Iceman did then yes, his age would be appropriate but he wouldn't be going into combat as a captain or higher. You might want to lookup the history of admirals and commodores and you'll understand what a rear admiral stands for which makes your smart-alecky joke backfire. So, there's no need for a new name for rear admiral. How about some history on Sargent Major General? 😉 There's a scene in the movie that Maverick pulled Goose's son's Naval Academy application is total BS because a captain doesn't have that kind of power. Plus Goose's son's excuse it took him four years longer because of that is BS also because he could still go to a regular college and apply for AOCS and still become a pilot without that long of a delay. They just needed a BS scene to create tension between the two characters. Overall a great video and looking forward to your next one. 👍

I actually did some contract work at the Lockeed plant a few years back. improvements/expansions on the F35 assembly area. Couldnt take any pictures, ofc. Classified and all that. But it was neat seeing the F35 in various stages of completion/testing. And of course we were out on the flight line sometimes too, so they were always test flying them around.

Great movie. Not a lot of character development with the other pilots but Rooster and Hangman stood out. You have to suspend belief on a few things for instance Goose's son Rooster would be 40 (5 in the original movie plus 35 yrs) which is pretty advanced age for a rookie pilot. Based on that I would put Tom Cruise's movie age to closer to 50 and Miles Teller closer to his actual age of early 30's. Lets face it Tom Cruise is pretty amazing for 60 y/o though right?

Don't know why anyone would say a Fighter Jet pilot couldn't also fly the P51. Take a look at the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight - crew flying Tornados and Eurofighters during the week and Lancaster, Hurricane and Spiftires on the weekend. I'm sure the Americans have their equivalents especially with the ease of GA private flying there. Obviously there's differences especially with nose wheel vs tail dragger and differences in the control systems but people can do both.
