I also had a stroke in my 40's because I was doing for everyone and running 24/7. It left me with a disability that I am managing by staying stress free. I now have learned the word no at a cost. Don't wait for a stroke people!! You have to be able to allow people NOT to like you if you say no. You have to be able to deal with the attitude and sting of their disapproval. This is a process. This is not going to happen overnight. Just keep saying no and eventually people will back off. You WILL lose people in the process. So what! SAVE YOURSELF !!

Thank you Ivy and Lisa. Thank you Mel Robbins. I have the same problem. My default answer is, "yeah! Sure" then I regret my response. That's why I avoid taking phone calls from work on my days off because I m afraid I would end up saying yes to this extra shift that I don't want.

Boy I needed this today. I woke up thinking about something that happened not to long ago. I was in a grocery store and an employee came by with a cart stacked high with product for restocking the shelves. They turned the corner really fast and a stack of large pack (24 roll) TP tumbled off and landed on me. So I'm a senior with a walker. I would have expected them to help get them out from around my feet and apologize. Of course I wasn't hurt, but if I had tripped on them I could have been. At this moment, after it happened and they had made eye contact with me, a woman taps the guy on the shoulder, she saw it happen too, and asks for help location something. He leaves with her to go help her find it. I'm standing there in shock. When he comes back he helps me finish moving them out of the way, but damn.. Do I exude "door mat" or what? The memory represents a current event. I don't feel physically strong enough to act with power. My aging is causing me trauma. I had over come this after an abusive childhood, but being physically weak has brought it back full force. What a devastating nightmare.

I'm sorry that happened to you. That is awful that the employee didn't help you first before helping the other woman. I find that we need to speak up even louder as we get older.

@@stellajameson1400 Thank you for your compassion and insight. I think you are right. I need to get that into my head. "Always be prepared to speak up for myself."
