You NEED to Use This Punch More: Body Jab

The jab to the body seems to be one of the most underutilized punches in boxing and all combat sports. Use it to set traps, score points, and deplete your opponent's fuel tank. You can use the body jab to:
• slip incoming jabs
• set up a powerful left hook, right hand, or rear uppercut
• initiate an attack

I always love using it when I start off with a jab to the head then quickly jab to the body, aiming for the solar plexus and finishing off with a right hand to the head. Real killer combo.

Really like the body jab as a disruptive strike to someone trying to close the distance. Its a harder target to miss compared to the head and while its not a high damage shot they aren't going to run through it. Also nice to break up an opponents combination.

My favorite technique for jab slipping (orthodox stance); Slip your opponents' jab and step your rear leg past their lead leg. Use the momentum from that step to drive a right uppercut to the underside of their chin, followed up by a left hook (which has much more power now because you're temporarily in south paw.) The body jab is a very effective way to set up the combination I just described, because if every time your opponent throws a jab at your head and you slip and throw a body jab, that starts to get to them. They eventually come up with a response for that, but once you realize they have, BOOM! You throw the combo I just explained.

I use this one alot and receive it alot. I have another tip, in this case PJ is much taller then Shawn. Try to bend down like mentioned but not too much, if your opponent is smaller you give him a chance to hit you in the face. So aim down but slightly lower the level so the shoulder is still there.

I’m street fights body punches are key as your fist is made of very little bones and if you hit someone’s face hard you can actually break a bone but it’s basically impossible to break a fist bone when you punch the body also all it takes is 1 moderately hard clean punch to the liver and your opponent is out

I call it the tin opener when teaching it to my boxers. So many world class fighters have been KO'd or stopped due to being set up by it. It will do something stamina-wise when stabbed in the gut over a long period, but it's most effective in my opinion when used as a set up for power shots upstairs. Joshua set up and stopped Povetkin with it recently, Floyd did some amazing work (probably the best I've seen) with it over his career - the Corrales and Hatton stoppages stand out. Although he was able to fold the enormous Maidana in half with it at points. Shane almost KO'd Mayweather with a variation of it, so effective is it's use to open the head up. Done wrong or badly (poor set up, telegraphing, etc) it can be very dangerous and there's been a few KO'd as mentioned by someone below.

not so much in later rounds unless you're both tired and you wanna play it safe and score points in competition. Repeat them early and once your opponent is focused on the low jab come high with the overhand like Dan Henderson
@fighttips
@fighttips 5 жыл бұрын
I'd argue especially in the later rounds! These punches wear on your endurance, causing you do drop your hands, so if you throw them early, often, and in the later rounds, you not only fatigue them, but set traps like ol' Hendo 🤘😁

I have never seen you do a video about limb destruction, where the targets of your percussive attacks are the limbs. It's there with kicking the legs, but that's it. I have done a lot of FMA in addition to the arts you find in MMA, and I find limb destruction very useful. It doesn't mean necessarily you break their joints, but intentionally elbowing or striking with the point of a knuckle or knee incoming attacks is very useful. I have had good success with it in my sparring it's mostly a matter of timing. Would be interesting to see your take on it or explain why you don't make videos about it.

You should do a video on check elbows. An example of this is the elbow Brian Ortega landed on Frankie Edgar. I feel that this technique is a lot safer than the check hook in mma because a lot of people have a tendency to load their check hook ie. Luke Rockhold vs Yoel Romero. The elbow gives you better defense cause it keeps your arm in the way of punch’s landing to the chin on that side.

*I've got countered with a Body Jab to the Solar Plexus* It's a horrible feeling. Will make you hard to breathe and you won't be able to attack because of the pain. If you guys ever land a body jab counter to the Solar Plexus of your opponent, go aggressive, they will have a hard time retaliating and for those who are on the receiving part, do your best keep a straight face. Do not let your opponent know that you are in pain.

If you slip the jab and throw a body jab like you did in the video, how do you get away from a cross coming after your opponents jab? To me this is what keeps a lot of people from throwing this because it is effective when trading single shots but not as effective when someone throws combinations at you.
@fighttips
@fighttips 5 жыл бұрын
Great question, Lucas -- think about it like this: your opponent is aiming for your head with the initial jab, to which you slip you head down and to the right. Now they have to adjust their cross, punching down, to where your head is now at. But of you continue moving your head, perhaps with a pull-back, you'll also slip their cross. Always keep your head moving; don't just slip one punch and then stand still. Hope this helps 👍

fightTIPS thank you! That does help for traditional one-twos, but if your opponent has a tendency to throw their one-two in a Nate Diaz like style I feel there wouldn’t be enough time to get your head out of the way.

Nah, did judo for years and had no injuries. It is quite intense, buit you mostly have to worry about your joints, not your head. You will be spending a lot of time learning how to break your falls properly at first and it's very unlikely you hit your head hard. I'd honestly say it's safer for your head than ice skating.

No one even uses the jab in mma, you really think they would use the body jab.. this a very dangerous technique that's why it's "underutilized" in boxing. In mma I think it is damn near suicide to throw the body jab if you're not skilled enough or trained enough to set it up. But YOU WILL BLEED working this technique in sparring, that's a guarantee
@MrDioXIII
@MrDioXIII 2 жыл бұрын
Year late reply, but you can thank Aldo for that. There was that one fighter who kept jabbing to the body, but his feint up top was so bad that he was telegraphing it, so Aldo timed the body jab with a knee and knocked him out. MMA is about imitation, so everyone saw that and went "nope, not body jabbing anymore", and it stuck. It's coming back a bit more now, but people are still worried about eating a knee going into it.

Short (BUT REAL STORY): Recently, I fought a random dude who kept coming over to where I was standing and asking me some weird questions.So, after like the 3th time he came over to where I was and asked me another Pointless question, I had said to him:"Look, Stop coming over to me and asking me questions". I DON'T know you and you Don'T know me, so Leave me ALONE!The dude said to me: "Who are you talking to like that"?I said to the dude:"I am talking to you!"A few more words(!#$%*) was exchanged between us.We started to fight!Dude had hit me first with like two punches to my face. In return, I had hit him with a few punches to his face.Then there was like a few quick seconds where he was trying to figure out my next move and I was doing the same thing.I eventually noticed that (at that point) he was feinting a little to much at throwing jabs at me.I was quick enough(b/C I weigh less than and am leaner than him) that he was Wide-OPEN to be Hit in the mid-section.I faked a punch to his head, as I ducked down and hit him with a straight punch to his stomach! The problem (for me is) I didNOT hit him hard enough to make him hurt and I should have hooked my punch to his stomach instead of the straight jab,(I figuring that I would have more Power in a hook-Punch to his stomach).The shot that I have hit him with, had little effect.He landed a few more punches to my face as I stood up and left myself WIDE-OPEN! Then some random guy jumped in and separated us.I will admit that he probably would have won that fight.But, I now know how to beat him.He does certain moves that leaves him open to some attacks that I know how to use.Another mistake that I made in that fight was thinking that one hit to his stomach would end the fight!!!I NOW KNOW Better!Lastly, This is VERY similar to a fight that I was in with another guy a few years ago!I guess it is true that sometimes you can learn in some fights that you lose!!
