I grew up on an apple farm and I'd love to share my experience (and my favorite apples) with you. First, if your trees are on a trellis, they'll survive the storms better. We had over 400 trees and high winds every winter and never lost a tree. Second, get your soil tested. In Oregon where I'm from, we had to supplement the minerals in the soil. Your trees will produce more and better apples (but only every other year) if you care for the soil properly. It's normal (even if you do everything right) to get a light harvest and a heavy one on alternating years. It's also common for fruit-bearing trees to bear lightly in their first years, and it's best not to let them produce in the first 2 years. I could tell you lots more but that's a great start. My favorite apple varieties: Melrose (great for baking, cider and cold storage) Akane (fresh eating only, very sweet) Gravenstein (good for baking and cider) Cox's Orange Pippin (earthy flavor, a great addition to pies and applesauce). Hope that helps!

1975, was the first year on our "Farmette", our elderly neighbor had a fruit orchard between our houses. It was so beautiful when the trees bloomed that spring. My family, including my parents and brother helped them pick the huge apple harvest that fall. We had a great time that day. Mrs. Hangs had a 3 legged ladder for picking fruit. You put the 3rd leg up against the tree trunk and could get up high in the middle of the tree. Yes, it was very sturdy. She as also had a long handled tool for picking fruit. It had a metal rounded fork shaped end with a canvas bag attached. We just put it around the apple, gently pulled on it and the apple fell into the bag. The Hangs both passed away many years ago. Through the years the orchard has also died or was destroyed my storms. We still have sweet memories of that first year on our "Farmette*.The Hangs tought us so much about gardening. Have a blessed day, stay safe and healthy🥰 🍎👍🙏🇺🇸

Thanks!! The Hangs' orchard had peaches, cherries, plums, and several varieties of apples, all were standard size fruit trees. Also concord grapes, which she gave me the plants because they were inside her backyard fence and she wanted them moved out.. A disease killed the remaining grape vines on both properties about 10 years ago. The only tree left is a Seckel (sp?) PearTree that no longer produces fruit, the second tree was blown over in a storm. Those pears were so good😋 Mrs. Hangs also introduced me to a Steam Juicer. This Juicer is just as important to me as my pressure and water bath canners. The Steam Juicer is available on Amazon. In 1975 my Mom and i both had to order ours from a company in Germany. Mrs. Hangs had purchased hers from them also. I dearly loved and respected that sweet German Lady, 🥰

I actually took a few cuttings from the Concord Grape Vines. I did as I had seen my Grandparents do. Put the cuttings into the soil past were a leave had been and then put a quart size Canning Jar over it and let Mother Nature take it's course, they all rooted and grew into beautiful producing plants 🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇🍇 Using my Steam Juicer I made organic grape juice for our family and jelly. I also made concord grape pies.😋🥰 One year I didn't have time to make up the pie filling to freeze, I just washed the grapes, pulled them off of the stems, threw them into 1qt Ball Plastic Freezer Containers and tossed them into the freezer. I pulled one out to make a pie, our 2 youngest sons got a frozen grape and ate it. They loved it, actually we all did 😋 from then on in the evenings this was a routine healthy snack while watching TV. The 2 boys laid in the floor eating the grapes, they were so cute. Needless to say we had very few pies that year. My Grandfather was born in Germany in1877, at 6 weeks of age his parents immigrated to the USA 🇺🇸 as and became Citizens. My Grandfather fought in the 6th Calvary and was gassed in France by the Germans. He had breathing problems for the rest of his life. My Grandmother's ancestors came to America in 1722 from England. Our ancestor, Nicholas Woodfin fought in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. A member of our family has fought in every War the USA has been in. God Bless America 👍🥰🙏🇺🇸

Yes they can. I'm from Michigan and the apple orchard's would start advertising their annual cider pressing events in a festival-like invitation to tour the grounds pick apples and buy a gallon of fresh pressed cider. They would also warm the cider with spices and serve it with warm cake donuts rich with nutmeg. Here in Missouri I don't hear anything about apple pressing events, or orchard tours. I miss Michigan at this time of year.

@Doug and Donny~Good morning! I worked in a nursing home when I was young. I was fired for giving a man a shower (he’d had a bad accident in bed-couldn’t walk) when it “wasn’t his day”. I was told to IGNORE HIM! I couldn’t do that. I had hoped and prayed things had gotten better. 😢

Its sad how they teach one way but in real life they dont do what they teach... i never got in trouble for showering someone who badly needed one when it wasnt their day... but then when i did bath aide i did have to pick up extras to play catch up from other people fallimg behind or from people calling in so often it was bath aide pulled to do other things... cuz one nursing assistant had anywhere between 12 to 18 people to care sometimes during a shift with most being needing full assistance... you work like a robot going as fast as you can as as safely tho often times people requiring 2 people to get someone up or moved you had to fly solo and pray the lift worked and all goes smoothly... my fav was actually bath aide rotation cuz you can pamper the person with doimg hair and nails and they always felt so awesome getting that shower... it made their day even week... it was a good day when you worked with hard working aids and awesome nurses even understaffed... during any downtime we loved to go back and give more time to the residents... nursing homes are so sad place.... assistant living places are usually fine and more relaxed cuz you assiting people not doing full care... i could never understand how one can pay so much for nursing homes and they share the room with 2 other people and toilet/sink with up to 6 other people... the single person smaller rooms where i worked was usually for someone with ton of money or someone on hospice to give family privacy with their loved one...

katya03316 That sounds reasonable. This was back in 1974. I was the EVERYTHING aide. On the wing I was on, it was just me, the LPNs and one RN. There were about 10 patients on that wing. All private rooms. I took vitals, changed sheets, delivered meals, did bedpans and urinals, and bathed patients. All of these patients used a bedpan or urinal. There were no lifts. If they could get in a wheelchair they went to the shower room. If not, they were bathed in bed (sponge bath-I’d never seen a bed bath until years later when my PT gave me a catalog). One patient had a private nurse. I guess these were the “well to do”? It never crossed my mind. The patients that got regular visitors were treated much better than those who didn’t. I remember seeing a call light on as I walked in that day. I pointed it out and was told he’d been a pain all morning, and to ignore him. The nurses station was at the corner of an L shaped hall. I put my purse away and got my schedule for the day. As I walked by his room I heard him calling for help. I went in to make sure he was ok. He’d had diarrhea, a very bad case. I’d never seen anything like it. I got him cleaned up, changed the sheets and put extra chucks just in case. I guess I could have just left him like that, but let’s face it, he needed a real shower! He was so grateful he had tears welling up in his eyes. I thought it was gratitude, but it could’ve been humiliation. He thanked me profusely. Bless his heart. He’d been ill! I don’t know what he’d done to make the nurses mad. Maybe he’d complained about his stomach hurting all night and all morning and they didn’t know he was having digestive problems. Maybe they’d done all they could do and were just tired of going to the end of the hall just to hear the same thing. I have no idea. I wasn’t trying to disobey orders. I was just worried when I heard him calling for help. It DID get me behind...but I completed everything on my schedule. That afternoon I spent extra time with another patient who was bedridden and non verbal. As I gave her a sponge bath I noticed she had bedsores on her heels. I noted them on her chart, treated them, and relieved the pressure. I also brushed and washed her long hair, and braided it so it wouldn’t get so tangled again. I had long hair so I probably had a hair tie in my pocket. I sang to her (that’s probably why I got fired! 😂) and treated her as though she was my own family. Her eyes sparkled. She couldn’t smile, but I sensed she was so tickled to have her “hair done”. I decided then and there that none of my loved ones would EVER be in a nursing home if I could help it, and if I couldn’t I’d visit as often as possible. I’ve done exactly that. To be honest, I spent half of my time as a kid in the hospital. I’d never seen patients treated badly on purpose. After a wonderful surgeon built me a hip and I was able to work I was a candy striper at Baptist Hospital and Children’s Hospital. I really wanted to be a nurse. I was not allowed by my Dr. to work on my feet. I did so against his advice. I’m paying for it now. He said I “couldn’t” but I COULD! I didn’t really understand. I just wanted to be like everyone else. And I wanted to give back. I still do...but treating anyone badly for any reason is just not something I can be quiet about. Never have, never will.

@@Hummingbird-ns1fp many years ago I worked as an aid in a county nursing home. I was trained by an retired nurse that was in her mid 80',s. She was great! I remember what she taught me and have used that training through the years in my everyday life, caring for my children, grandmother, parents, and friend with terminal cancer. I think one of the most important thing she taught her students was that often an aid is the last person a patient has human contact with before they die. "Treat your patients like you would like to be treated if it were you in that bed" . Her compassion was endless as well as her dedication. They told me on one review that I got too attached to my patients. My reply " How can I not!" I loved them all, especially the naughty ones! Thanks to the many you cared for.

Kismet! Today, I harvested all of our apples and pears! (02.10.20.) Bad weather forecast. Here in Scotland, the longer you leave the fruit the sweeter the low sun makes it. Sort of Russian roulette!! Lost all the plums due to bad weather and ill health, so today was a landmark day. All the trees that did poorly last year did really well this year and those that flourished last rested. We planted a lot of new trees when we got our allotment two years ago and the juveniles are doing well. They are alive! One or two fruits this year, so I hope next year will be awesome! There is cider on my horizon, canned apples and crumble! Today, the overwintering onion and garlic sets arrived in the post... so I better get on my mustang Sally! They will not plant themselves. Continued health, wealth and happiness to you both. Long life! Regards Stephen.

When mom died (by suicide 25 years ago), I made a big batch of tuna noodle casserole for us to eat. My dad and I were devastated as you can well imagine. I was too upset to eat at dinner time, but my dad invited a neighbor who had stopped by, to join he and my daughter for dinner. About 30 minutes later, I saw my dad and his friend on the dock (it was dark out) and I saw my dad dump the casserole in to the canal. I was so hurt to think he didn't like my cooking (it was a comfort dish growing up and I made it the same way as my mom did) on top of my moms death, but I didn't let him know I'd seen him do that. I went in to the house through the garage and in to the kitchen. Sitting on the counter were the 2 large cans of tuna. In my grief, I'd forgotten to add them to the dish. LOLOLOLOLOL

Considering the circumstances the missing tuna was completely understandable. I'm sorry for your loss, even though it has been many years I'm sure you still miss your mom. When my dad passed suddenly (13 years ago), he was in a different region of the country. I needed to pack quickly, find some pictures, take care of our five kids, 3 months old - 16 years. My headed was muddled, packing took forever, and I never did find the pictures. When we got back home to weeks later, I found the pictures easily ... hmm, you do what you can, as you can. I miss my dad too, Doug reminds me of him a bit, my dad would have loved Doug & Stacy's homestead, the orchard and bees especially.

@@virginiaseedsskogen2038 Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss, too. Your head being muddled... that's a great description. They too, lived in an entirely different part of the country than me. That must have been a very hard loss, with your children being so young and never getting to know him. My mom would have loved Doug and Stacy's channel. My dad didn't watch tv, so I don't think he would have watched it. Thank-you for your kind words. :-)

I core and blend my unpeeled apples. Blend them in the Vitamix until it is smooth with the inside of a shelf stable probiotic capsule and a little salt. That’s it. Put it in jjars and leave on the counter a few days to ferment. Stir each day. It tastes like apple cider. Best apple sauce and no cinnamon even needed but you can use it if you want.

In an empty quart-sized jar mix: 1 Tablespoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon salt 2 Tablespoons kombucha Juice of 1 lemon (about 3 Tablespoons of lemon juice) add purified water, about 1/2 of the jar. In anther empty quart-sized jar, pack as many apple slices as you can. Leave a 1-1.5 inch head-space at the top. Pour your mixture in and mix things up. Use the top of an apple or a fermenting weight to keep the apples under the brine. Put in a dark place at room temperature for 2-3 days. Move to the fridge to stop the fermenting processes. Should last at least 3 - 4 months. Eat a little every day; it's a great probiotic food that helps with digestion. Great as a snack or to eat with a meal. I've referred back to this video so many times since I found it, that I thought I'd make it easier for myself and others to find the recipe and steps, and I appreciate it when others who watch videos take the time to do this:)

Stacy, You have inspired me to try some of this kind of preservation. I have been fermenting for a month and everything tastes wonderful. About the cultured apples...are there signs that the apples are ready? I did a mix of raisins, carrot, apple, cranberry, clove, cinnamon, maple syrup, salt, and whey. It tastes wonderful. but how do I know it is ready?

Stacy, when my nephew was a teen he wanted to help me make cookies at Christmas time. I gave him an apron and a set of measuring cups and told him to measure some ingredients for me. Little did I know he did not read the markings on the handles of the measuring cups. When I mixed the batter it did not seem to be the right texture. I ask him did you put in the number of cups the recipe said and he said yes, but they were fractions of a cup. So I had him tell me which one he used and I explained that the measuring cups were all different sizes and a cup is not an indication of volume unless it says it is one cup. So we added a bunch more flour and sugar and everything so in the end all came out well. Sometimes when I forget an ingredient, I don't admit it, I just say I tweeked the recipe. My husband never knows the difference.

Doug&Stacy I have been watching you for about 5 months. God Bless you :') Thank you for sharing your life with us. I know what you do is hard hard work. I was worried about my immune system because I got a little sick right after Thanksgiving. It was viral but not COVID. So somehow I ran across you two. I already started to grow some vegetables, melons and of course flowers. Sunflowers, Zinnia's and cosmos. I live in Arizona and I get the hot. Every day hand watering I work with what I have ha ha this isn't even my house we rent. I have learned so much .Most of this stuff is easy but truly work and then the worst part for me has been finding my groove. I am very organized and my brain feels like it's going to explode sometime. Sometimes I watch the two of you and all you have done and I get a tear or 2 well 2 eyes full cause I know what you do and the space in your home is a true challenge. I have had some failures but many successes. All in all I ferment "everything" I just don't want the sugar or the whole amount. I don't need a log cabin so I am writing this because I want you to know just how much my husband and I appreciate and love the two of you. Stay Free my online youtube friends. You don't know me but I feel I know you and I like what I see!!! Hugs and more hugs. Keep on Keep'n on. P.S. I really do like the hard work 3 or 4 hours of perspiration is good for us. Oh and people pay to go to a gym each month for the same thing lol.
