Our favorite oatmeal add-ins are DRIED CRANBERRIES (aka "Craisens"), minced ginger root, coconut shreds, freshly grated nutmeg and a drop of sesame oil. We always use rolled oats (not quick oats) Mix in water or milk and zap a couple of minutes in the microwave. After cooking can be topped with fresh berries and a dollop of yogurt. Yummy quick breakfast!

After months of lurking, reading, and learning, my son bought me a small generic dehydrator. He wanted me to try apples for him. Okay, the first load went on the five trays, and he loved them. I put in a second load of five trays for a snack on his flight from Philadelphia to Las Vegas. They didn't make it to the airport. They were gone the day before his flight! Absolutely thrilled to have learned so much from all of you amazing people. Darcy, thank you for everything!

I'm so glad that I found you. May I ask if you have to use designated flats with your vacuum sealer or can you use Ball flats. Also, can you use jelly/pickle jars?
@ThePurposefulPantry10 ай бұрын
You can use any flat lids as long as they are in good condition. Reuse them as often as you'd like for dry storage, too (just not canning). You can use pickle/jelly jars as they are airtight, but they won't work with a vacuum sealer unless you are doing a chamber vac.

Another super helpful video Darcy! I was wondering if I want to make apple powder, should I dehydrate it then power it, or would it be better if I blend them, dehydrate it, then powder them? Would there be any difference in taste or aroma? I was hoping to speed up the dehydration process 😆😆
@danacheng6232 Жыл бұрын
Was also wondering about the same thing for the celery powder(I watched your previous video on this and the powder turns out to be awesome). But I was wondering if I blend them first then dehydrate it, would the taste be affected? Since I need to powder them anyway, it would be so cool to see how you go about it!
@ThePurposefulPantry Жыл бұрын
If your only goal is powder - blending will be faster. I rarely ever make it my only goal because I prefer to store whole for longer storage and want options about how I use it.

Can you do the same with bananas and make banana sugar for baking? I have a toddler and want to reduce the amount of sugar I'm using in baked goods (although I know that fruit is sugar too). Using honey or maple syrup gets expensive though.
@ThePurposefulPantry2 ай бұрын
You can, but banana powder is super clumpy because of all of the natural sugars. So be prepared to deal with that. Using not quite ripe bananas will work better, but they won't be as sweet.

Hello, I don’t have air tight containers. I am using zip lock bags and those moisture packs. How long is the shelf live doing it without air tight containers?
@ThePurposefulPantry Жыл бұрын
Not very long. Ziptop bags are air permeable, meaning they exchange easily. Some things may last months, some things may only last weeks. You're best storing them in better mylar bags or in the fridge/freezer if you want long term storage.

Dehydrated food compared to freeze dry food and can I just dehydrate items and put in jar ? what’s the purpose of a freeze dry machine if it gets the same item done for soup mixes etc in a jar.
@ThePurposefulPantry9 ай бұрын
Much longer shelf life (2-3 years verses 10-20 years depending on product), different (sometimes much better) texture, and the ability to do foods you can't do when dehydrating. Dehydrating isn't bad, just not quite as versatile.
@68868s2 ай бұрын
What do you do if your apple peels have wax on them?
@ThePurposefulPantry2 ай бұрын
Clean it off. The food-grade wax isn't harmful in the small doses you get from apples, but if you're concerned, soak them in a sink of warm water with some lemon juice and baking soda and let them soak for awhile, scrub with a brush and rinse.
@sharonstory6479Ай бұрын
I looked in The Dehydrators Bible, and it said slices should be pliable. Beginners Guide to Dehydrating said 'leathery to crisp.' I trust you most. Do you recommend pliable or crisp? In the video, yours looked a bit crisp, but I wasn't sure.
@ThePurposefulPantryАй бұрын
Pliable means dry but will be a little bendy. If you want to store it, dry dry dry. It's your personal preference about what you prefer for texture - but if you like it softer, store in the fridge. My goal is for storage when I teach .

I put them in the fridge since I wasnt sure they were dry enough. If they bend should I dehydrate them some more?
@ThePurposefulPantry Жыл бұрын
Dry everything by the basis of it being dry, not by the time. If you can't easily break the apple slice, it's not done, but be sure not to do it right out of the dehydrator, but give it 5 min or so to cool.

Be very careful if you have the Cosori 6 tray dehydrator, mine burnt 6 trays of apples and bananas. I always unplug my machine when not in use, as soon as I plugged it in for another batch of apples the machine became extremely hot on the outside and I could smell something burning, I hadn't started dehydrating, just plugged it in. Within minutes the machine completely stopped working Cosori is making me jump through hoops to get a warrenty replacement. The machine is only 6 months old, DO NOT leave these machines plugged in if your not using it.
