I know some cvt from Jatco are acctually good one if oil is being changed on time and properly(according to Suzuki, it is a long life oil...whatever) Suzuki Kizashi cvt can hold up until 400.000km+ the only reason is that the owner had a friend mechanic who told him that transmision oil on those should be changed every 80-100k. The car still runs like a charm and cvt is doing nice. I bought same Kizashi with 6 speed manual sold here in Europe and the car runs like new 115.000km no problems at all.

I can definitely vouch that the CVT transmission fluid has to have exactly the right amount of fluid. I had mine replaced under warranty and they over filled it just slightly and it banged huge. A different shop took out 1/3 quart and it's run perfectly for 75k miles since then.

yowza! for any DIY oil changing newbs out there, DO NOT USE a long socket wrench, aka a breaker bar, for tightening the oil drain plug! guarantee you will strip the threads out of the oil pan, creating a major problem that will leave you stuck and probably need professional repair. use a regular wrench size (8-9 inch handle) that comes with most small homeowner socket sets, and only grip the handle near the head of the wrench when tightening the plug. i prefer to put the socket head between my index and middle finger for gripping the wrench. you only need about a 1/4 turn after fully snugging the plug to the pan with your fingers.

I have been servicing my Nissan Navara D40 (2.5 TD ,4 cylinders) since day one . I have used mineral oil (API CI4). I service it (oil change) every 7500 km (6.6 liters ) as I use 20 liters oil containers so I can get 3 services out of one 20 liters drum.. I have never ever replaced the washer (drain plug) . It does not drip oil from the drain plug . Being able to buy from a local manufacturer oil filters for less than 2 USD , I replace them every time . My Navara is now 320 k km.. Make the calculation for the number of oil change . It does not consume any engine oil (or barely noticeable). On thing : I leave in Malaysia. It s never cold . Anyways, I always take an easy 10 to 15 mnts drive before flooring the gas pedal (if needed ) . Regular service and a minimum of understanding about how an engine works and wears off makes a big difference on costs . As Scotty says , it does not matter what oil you are using providing you respect the oil replacement interval , you don't race your engine when it is cold , and when you follow the manufacturer oil specs . Never ignore any signs such an oil leak , usual sound , vibration etc . You vehicle will last much longer .. Good a'nd safe drive to all (at a minimum cost ). Maintenance (and understanding) are the keys ...

Ended up doing a couple oil changes back to back (under 1k miles between), along with a seafoam and a berryman's crankcase. Both oil changes were black. I now have normal colored oil. DO NOT go by time or miles on your oil, go by color. And treat your car to some premium occasionally, especially if you dont drive a lot.

I have a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan. I know anything by Mopar are not the most reliable, but here is a story for you to share on why you should ignore the recommended maintenance intervals and also why Mopar suck. I bought the 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan a little after 50,000 miles in 2014. It was great until on vacation in Utah the transmission was making a very high pitched noise, but was still drivable. I was just over 80,000 miles, so I called Mopar about the warranty and they told me the transmission warranty is only to 80,000 miles. Go figure right! Like they new my transmission would go out just after 80,000 miles. I decided to get the transmission flushed to see if that would help. It did not help much. Then I took it to AAMCO to get the transmission rebuilt. Everything works now and I am at 140,000 miles, but I think every 30,000 miles I will start dropping the transmission pan, replace the transmission filter, and top off the transmission fluid. I plan to do my first change soon. I used think these newer transmission didn't need the transmission fluid changed until like 100,000 to 150,000 miles, but now I believe more frequent intervals is best. Unfortunately, I hear that many shops won't change your transmission fluid if it is still under warranty, so for vehicles under a 100,000 miles you will have to do it yourself if you want to change the transmission filter and oil about every 30,000 miles.

I write down the kms and date every oil change on a sticker which then goes on the top of windscreen on drivers side. We change oil either, every 3000kms (no matter what oil filter we use) or every 6 months (which ever 1 comes 1st) I check ALL fluids on a weekly basis. A service is done every 6 - 12 months. None of it is hard to do. If any problems come up, it is dealt with promptly. Both my transmission and motor still going strong

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 HYBRID - emphasis on HYBRID is incredibly DIRECT and EASY as far putting the proper amount of Tranny fluid back in after draining. Just fill to overflow capacity and then let is drain out of the FILL PORT until it diminishes to a drip. BAM! Put the plug BACK in and then do your rear differential axel in the same manner. Keep in mind that in BOTH cases you're replenishing ALL of the fluid.

Nissan has the overflow tube in the CVT pan (the inner bolt) - makes filling easier. Drain by removing inner and outer bolt, replace both. Fill with about 4 quarts, run car 20 min, keep it running and remove outer bolt. All the excess fluid will drain while the inner overflow bolt maintains correct level. Btw, make sure car is level.

My sister had a new nissan car that the transmission went out twice within 80k miles. The first time the dealership replaced it with a used transmission, when that one went the car was still in warranty but they refused to fix it, instead they offered 3,000 trade in for another new car. Her second new Nissan versa lasted about 60k miles before it started to scare her by randomly revving then going back to normal. Now she finally has a toyota like the rest of the family. The only vehicle brand that has never left us on the side of the road.

Anytime we got a working CVT transmission at the salvage yard I worked at it was gone within hours to a few days....but usually hours. Tack freight shipping and fees on it...very expensive. Always a strong sign of a problem part. I started changing our oil some years ago. The place we were going to was not replacing gaskets (which caused leaking) and putting everything on ridiculously tight. Made a big difference going from the generic filter they were using to a factory Hyundai and ACDelco filters for our cars.

I'm lucky. My CVT has a dip stick. And my transmission pan has a drain plug. Changing my transmission oil is super easy. I don't even need to jack up my car, either! Got just enough clearance to slide under. It's a 5 minute job.

Yup. Don't ever use aftermarket tranny fluid. That stuff will only make run worse because it corrodes/burns up much faster than the dealer brand. And replace your radiator if you have a high mileage CVT vehicle ..just as a precaution. Radiators have been known to contaminate the CVT fluid.

I don't think CVT is more complicated than an automatic. The one thing I see is the torque being transferred through friction. Part A transferring power to part B through something rubbing, a roller, a belt or whatever. I'm surprised that any of them last more than 50k. Keeping clean fluid of the correct type is Imperative.
@soilmanted
@soilmanted 2 жыл бұрын
At Randy Carter, well yes, mechanically the design is simple but because power is transferred from input pulley to output pulley by friction between the belt and the pulley surfaces, the belt and the pulley surfaces must be specially designed and and have a complicated construction. The steel belts are of a special design. The surface of the pulley have special contact surfaces that are unusual. I think perhaps the pulley contact surfaces may be laser-etched. And the correct oil must be used. It does seem like it would be surprising that these transmissions last long. You might think that after 50k miles of use the specially etched pulley surfaces would wear, and there would be increased slippage between the belt and the pulleys. Perhaps the power transfer would very gradually decrease with mileage, reducing acceleration and decreasing the number kilometers one gets per liter of fuel. However when they are new they work very nicely. Not everyone appreciates how very well they accelerate. You can accelerate very rapidly. When doing so. you don't get the same sound and vibrations that you get from a regular planetary gearset automatic, and people who are accustomed to using these sounds to estimate how fast a vehicle is accelerating, may not realize just how well a CVT vehicle is actually accelerating. Very often the CVT car is accelerating faster than people realize it is accelerating. It is a similar phenomenum to driving on a wide freeway after having driven on a twisty country road. On the twisty road 50 mph feels very fast. On the freeway the same 50 mph feels slow. If you don't use the speedometer, you might accelerate to 80 mph on the freeway, while thinking you are only going 50. Similarly, with a CVT, you might go from 0 to 100 kilometer per hour very quickly, but with you don't actually time the acceleration, you get a sensation of not accelerating all that quickly.

See the car care nut channel. Along with this man. Just watched how to make your Toyota last 300k. He’s a mechanic at Toyota dealership. Tranny speaking. He said it’s a delicate balance. Too soon. Not good. Too late not good. He said 60k is good interval. He explains on that video I named here. Love this channel. My mistake I made , I bought a 11 Altima mint condition w 60k. I always wanted to change tranny oil. But never owned a car with little miles like this. I didn’t. Now it’s 160k. Ppl say the clutch material reinforces the plates that flake off. That’s why it’s not good to change after 150 k. Unfortunately! The car care nut explains everything in detail. All major components in car. In that video. Have a good day.
