I did this so the rest of humanity would not have to suffer my fate, nor would you, my liege. I heard in an interview that Stephen Graham improvised the initial assault on Al Pacino (knocking away his ice cream, throwing him to the ground) on set, and that the reaction by Pacino at 0:47 is genuine. Graham elaborated further that Pacino got up with the words "Marty (Martin Scorsese), did you see that? The kid fighting me?!" and that he (Graham) was very proud to be called "kid" by Pacino

Scorcese is the absolute master of creating scenes that are both intense & funny...Remember the very first time you ever saw the "Am I Funny?" scene in Goodfellas? The humor went down as the tension went up & it was brilliant. And not only that, it totally catches you off guard later in the Spider "Go f*ck yourself" scene...Genius

I imagine that when your agent calls and says "Hey, do you want to do a Scorsese movie? You get to beat up Al Pacino." ...that you can rest assured that you have pretty much reached the pinnacle of the acting profession.

The best part of this scene for me is the usage of "Sleep Walk" by Santo and Johnny. A beautiful, calming song in contrast to two gangsters sitting in a prison cafeteria fighting. Scorsese does an amazing job at juxtaposition once again.
