Hi, I am a goalkeeper. and to reply to your first part of the video where you said about hugging the near pole and reference that the gk shall be cover the entire goal. you are absolutely correct. Just as a thought, goalkeepers should use the center of goal as reference . As all of my previous gk coaches have taught me, you should be able to draw a straight line of string from the center of the goal to your opponent that is about to strike the ball.

Early training I did around positioning was with cones all around the box to judge angles and positioning. Angles, angles, angles!! And in many ways this was more important than ball handling itself. As a very short keeper, what I find that has propelled my game is creating a 'fearful' and dominating presence in the 18 yard box with punching balls clear (with a high knee), strong commands and some physically strong diving at feet on one-on-ones sow a real seed of doubt in the striker's head. Love these videos and thanks I refer to them often 👌⚽
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping

Absolutely spot on - angles are everything in goalkeeping, and using cones to work on positioning is such a smart approach! It’s inspiring to hear how you’ve turned your height into an advantage by focusing on presence and dominating the box. Punching with confidence, commanding your defenders, and committing fully to one-on-ones can really shake a striker’s mindset, and it sounds like you’ve nailed that aspect of the game. Thanks for sharing your insights and for the kind words about the videos - it means a lot! Keep up the amazing work in goal! 💪🧤⚽🔥

Great advices. Doing it similar here in germany We also have 4 "mind operation settings": First and numerous one priority is Goal defence - that's your job, that's you primary objective. Second, air and pass interception mode - if you can get a pass before the attacker does, do it, if there is a cross you can catch, before the striker get's it aimed at the goal, go for it Thrird, the mix between one and second - one on one situations. You could not get it before the striker, but you get close enough to to make him unable to get a clear strike. Fourth: the lazy part - playing the ball. You act as regular defensive player or you do throws and kicks to restart a game after a save or a missed attempt of the opponents attack. You allways switch between those. But for example you are in Mindset four - and act as player, the opponent gets into possession of the ball, switch back to number one priority! Watch you position, head into optimum position to prevent a straight and sudden sot at the goal. From there you can see, if you have to switch to Mindset two, to maybe run and get a pass or head out to catch a cross, and you drop back into mindset four - restart the game and have you team back in game again.... or maybe you need to switch to Mindset three, wiggle the striker into one of those nasty one on one situations and prevent a shot at the goal... get your team time and a defender, to take over on the attacker. Now you can change back into number one priority, mindset one - get back to primary objective - Goal defence ...
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping

This is such a detailed and structured way to approach goalkeeping I love it! 🙌 The 'mind operation settings' concept is a great way to break down the different responsibilities of a goalkeeper. It’s like having a mental checklist to stay sharp and adapt to any situation on the pitch. Switching between these mindsets seamlessly is a skill in itself, and the way you’ve explained it is super insightful. Goalkeeping really is about balancing these priorities while staying focused on the ultimate objective: keeping the ball out of the net. Thanks for sharing your process - this could definitely help a lot of keepers fine-tune their mental approach! 💪🧤⚽

Hi, I have been a goalkeeper coach for about 30 years, it has been an incredible evolution in which I have sometimes but necessarily had to modify or distort over time my guidelines and the foundations on which I had based my teaching bases, this only thanks to the my desire to improve myself and always stay updated on the techniques that were coming forward and also obviously on tactics. I have watched and partly recorded thousands of matches from all the major European championships and beyond, I have explored and I still do so now that I am 65 years old, all the possible and imaginable websites and by virtue of this I can honestly say that yours is one of the best relating to the preparation of goalkeepers, explained in a simple but extremely effective way, the fact that you carry it out personally is an added value, you have a 'excellent posture and you move very fluidly, thank you very much because I found really interesting ideas 🙂, you never stop learning, thanks again ❤ps I hope the translation from Italian to English is correct

My positioning is one of my weakest points. I needed this badly thank you so much. The simple trick of drawing a line from the ball to the centre of the goal and standing right in the middle but a step ahead was an eye opener. How do you keep your bearings relative to the centre of the goal while being focused at the ball when you cannot look back? I use the penalty spot or the other goal for straight shots but for tighter angles I have no reference point in front of me to centre myself.
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping 3 ай бұрын
Glad the positioning tip helped! That line trick really makes a difference, right? When it comes to keeping your bearings without constantly looking back, it’s all about using subtle reference points and building spatial awareness over time. Here are a couple of tips: Use your posts: Even though you can’t look back, you can still glance quickly at your posts when the ball is wide. This gives you a sense of how much space you need to cover and where you are relative to the goal. Peripheral vision: Try to stay aware of your position without fully taking your eyes off the ball. Over time, you’ll get better at knowing where you are just by feel. Small adjustments: Make small movements rather than big ones. This way, you can fine-tune your positioning based on the ball’s movement without getting caught out of place. It’s tricky at first, but the more you practice, the more natural it will feel. Keep working at it! 💪⚽

Last week we draw a game 3-3 should've won it but i make 3 Freak Mistake, three of the shots we're slow 1.i underestimated the shot and it slips from my hand(Top Left Corner) 2.Low driven shots should've dived instead i try to use my legs 3.bad positioning and i couldn't reach the ball in time
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping Ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing this - mistakes happen, and it’s great that you’re reflecting on them to improve. Let’s break it down and focus on how you can bounce back stronger: 1. Underestimating Shots Even slow shots can be tricky, especially if you’re not fully focused. Treat every shot with the same level of seriousness. Focus on hand positioning and keeping your eye on the ball all the way into your hands. 2. Low Driven Shots Using your legs can work in certain situations, but for low-driven shots close to your body (of course depending on the distance), diving is usually more effective. Practice collapsing dives to get low quickly and secure those saves. 3. Positioning Positioning is key to reaching those tough shots. Remember to draw an imaginary line from the ball to the center of the goal and stay on that line. React quickly by staying light on your toes and keeping a low, balanced stance. The fact that you’re analyzing your mistakes shows you’re serious about improving. Use these lessons as fuel for your next game - you’ve got this! 💪🧤⚽ Keep pushing forward!

Hey buddy. Great question! It's obviously a lot more difficult because you can't tell him to move. 1. You could pray that he's in an offside position and the linesman is awake hehe... 2. It really is the same principles. Stay low, stay close to your line, and make sure you see the ball. This is a very difficult situation but something that happens all the time. Great question!

Thanks, glad you found the tips helpful! And yeah, that’s a super common issue, especially at the amateur level. Defenders sometimes think they know best, but ultimately, it's the goalkeeper’s call when to come out - you have the best view of the play. Stick to your instincts and decision-making. Communication is key, so keep working on that understanding with your defenders, but remind them that you're in the best position to judge when to come out. It’ll improve over time! Keep trusting yourself! 👊⚽

I play in an 8v8 rec league with a bunch of mates. Any advice on if there’s anything I should do differently since there’s no offsides?
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping 3 ай бұрын
Hey, playing 8v8 with no offsides can definitely change the way you approach the game as a goalkeeper! Without offsides, attackers can hang back closer to your goal, which means you’ll need to stay more aware of their positioning. Here are a couple of tips: 1. Since attackers can hover near the goal, it’s important to constantly communicate with your defenders and let them know where the threats are. Keep them organized and alert, especially when the other team has the ball. 2. You might want to adjust your positioning slightly by staying a bit further off your line. It gives you a better chance to react to any long balls or quick through passes and can help you close down attackers faster. 3. Be ready for quick breaks since attackers can get in behind your defense more easily. Working on your one-on-one saves and footwork can help with those situations. Hope that helps! Enjoy the games with your mates!

It's interesting to see. I'm an ice hockey fan and when I watch football it's interesting how the goalies do things and how they are different. There is one well known football goalie that switched to being an ice hockey goalie after finishing a successful career in football. He is from czechia where ice hockey is the national sport. He became a goalie in football because training in ice hockey was too expensive and his dad took him to a football field instead. What do you think are some of the main differences between ice hockey and football goalies? I'm noticing that definitely the stance and leg work seem to be quite a bit different. In ice hockey goalies frequently need to get down on the knees very quickly and get back up in the stance also very quickly as those pucks go very fast and can fly in the net so quickly if not ready and not fast enough
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping 3 ай бұрын
Hey, that’s really cool! The switch from football to ice hockey goalie is definitely unique, and you're spot on about the differences. The goalkeeper's name was Petr Cech - One of the best football goalkeepers in history :) One of the biggest differences is the stance. Football goalkeepers typically have a more upright stance, staying on their feet to cover more of the goal. In contrast, ice hockey goalies often drop into the butterfly position (down on their knees) to cover the lower part of the net and block quick low shots. Leg work is another huge difference. Football goalies rely a lot on lateral movement, explosive dives, and quick sprints to cover their goal. Ice hockey goalies need incredibly fast leg work too, but it’s more about pushing off their skates to slide side-to-side across the crease while staying low to the ice. The gear also plays a role - hockey goalies are padded up and need to move in a different way because of the added bulk. Speed and reaction times are crucial in both, but the surfaces, movement patterns, and specific skills required make the two positions very different. Ice hockey is all about quick up-and-down movements, while football goalies focus more on explosive footwork and dives. It's fascinating how those skills translate across sports!

@@GroundGloryGoalkeeping thanks for the reply. Now it makes more sense, it's good to see someone that practices it describing the observed difference. I like watching the training videos of both football and ice hockey goalies and even though I don't play either of the sports I think a lot of those exercises that they do would be nice to incorporate into workouts for healthy living. However that ice hockey goalie thing looks very painful on the legs and knees I must say, probably I wouldn't last long and the legs and knees must be in a good condition in general for that. I heard that outside of ice they do a lot of squat like exercises as well to help them with that. How about splits? Actually this is another thing that I have seen in hockey goalies but not so much in football goalie training. Some saves are made when they go into full splits therefore also must train for that and be very flexible that way. Another painful thing. I think in football it's a lot of sideways rapid dropping to the ground to block the quick low shots. And as you mentioned the equipment of course is different which would change movements. In ice hockey there is a lot of protection while in football the clothing is very light and goalies I think only have gloves. And the goals or nets in ice hockey are a lot smaller than in football. However keeping this in mind I wonder why the average score per game in football is lower than the one in hockey? Could you explain? I read that in football the average per game is 3 goals (I've seen 0-0 games) while in hockey it's over 6 goals per game. Just recently saw latvia France game where the result was 5-2. In football that would be quite rare I think, 7 goals per game. Probably if the goals would be as big in hockey as in football the score would be 50 goals per game or something around there
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping 3 ай бұрын
Hey, great to hear from you again! I'm glad the explanation made more sense! You're spot on about the leg and knee strain for ice hockey goalies - it’s no joke! They do a ton of squats, lunges, and flexibility training off the ice to stay strong and protect their joints. And yeah, the splits are a huge part of their game. Hockey goalies need that extreme flexibility to cover the lower part of the net. In football, you’re right - it’s more about rapid side-to-side movement and quick drops for those low shots, but flexibility is still key, just in different ways. As for the scoring differences, it’s really interesting! One big reason is the size of the goal and field. In football, goalkeepers and defenders have a lot more space to cover, and the pace of the game is slower, so it’s harder to create as many clear-cut chances. Plus, football goalies are often more about positioning and reading the play, while hockey goalies rely on reaction saves in much faster-paced environments. Also, the size of the puck vs. the size of a football makes a huge difference. In hockey, the puck is small and moves super fast, which makes it harder to track and stop, leading to more goals. Combine that with the fact that there are fewer players on the ice (especially during power plays), and it’s easier to get scoring chances. In football, the larger ball, bigger field, and more defensive players contribute to lower scores. And yeah, if hockey goals were as big as football goals, we’d probably see some insane scores - like 50-40 games 😅. Thanks for the thoughtful questions! Let me know if you have more, I love discussing this stuff!
@dreamthedream8929

@@GroundGloryGoalkeeping those quick drops look really nice to block the low shots. but in the diving saves how do football goalies fall like that on their shoulders or arms without injuries? Ive seen that some of the off ice exercises or workouts for hockey goalies are similar to what they do in football as well. But I think there would be differences in exercises or movements for arms and the stance as of course in hockey they hold the stick in one hand and there is also a blocker on that arm and on the other there is the catcher glove. The stance should be that the stick always covers the gap between the legs and stays firm on the ice. And this way they should move around while tracking the puck. Yes, it makes some sense from the way you described that difference in average scoring. The size and more players and other elements all come together to make it so. The net in football may be big but it actually may be hard to even get that ball to it and make a shot. I couldn't find the average shots on goal per game in football. Do you know what that is? In ice hockey its 25+ per game. If there would be 30 minutes more like in football there would be a lot more. But I was looking at the average or highest goalie saves per game in football and found that perhaps 19 saves per game is an all-time record. And of course the average should be below that. Perhaps around 10 saves per game in football. What do you think? If that is really so then it would show that it is indeed difficult to get that ball to the net and make a shot. That is compared to ice hockey as there sometimes goalies perform 40+ saves per game. I think the record has been over 70 saves in one game in 1991. Actually I was surprised to find out that in hockey there is no need for football sized nets in order to have a super high score game. There was a junior game for olympic qualification between slovakia and bulgaria and slovakia won with 82-0. That is a basketball game score, you dont expect that in hockey! Slovakia scored a goal every minute in that game and it's the guiness record for the highest scoring official tournament hockey game. There have also been some 17 goal games in nhl, also recently. You can check them out on youtube.
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping 3 ай бұрын
Hey, great insights again! Yeah, those quick drops for low saves in football are essential, and it’s all about technique to avoid injury. Football goalkeepers are trained to fall in a way that spreads the impact, landing more on their side and rolling with the fall, rather than hitting the ground directly on their shoulder or arm. Building core strength and flexibility also helps prevent injuries during dives. You're right about the differences in arm movements for hockey goalies compared to football. The stick and blocker/catcher combo completely changes their stance and the way they move, especially with keeping that stick between their legs to cover the five-hole. Football goalies have much more freedom with their arms, allowing for wider, more explosive movements to block shots. As for shots on goal in football, the average can vary, but it’s generally around 10-15 shots per team per game, depending on the league or level of play. So, combined, that’s 20-30 shots per game, but many of those aren’t necessarily on target. The actual shots on goal that require saves are usually lower, often around 5-7 per game for a goalkeeper, though it can spike higher in some matches. So yeah, it’s much harder to create clear chances in football due to the bigger field, more players, and tighter defensive setups. And because of that, goalkeepers don’t face as many shots as hockey goalies do. The 19-save game you mentioned is super rare in football, while in hockey, goalies regularly face 30+ shots, with some games going up to 50-70 saves like you pointed out. That Slovakia-Bulgaria game sounds crazy! 82-0 is absolutely wild-definitely a once-in-a-lifetime scoreline. And yeah, hockey games with 17 goals or more are nuts, but they happen every now and then, especially if one team is really dominating. Thanks for sharing these cool facts!

Are there any tips for keepers who dont convinient access to a standard sized post but wanna be sble to play well in that kind of post
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping
@GroundGloryGoalkeeping 2 ай бұрын
Absolutely! Not having access to a standard-sized goal doesn’t mean you can’t train effectively. Here are a few tips to help you prepare, even without a full-sized goal: Work on positioning: Use cones or markers to simulate the edges of a standard goal. Focus on your positioning relative to where the ball is, which will help you stay sharp when transitioning to a full-sized goal. Footwork and angles: Even without a full post, you can still practice your footwork and angle work. Move from one marker to another as if you’re covering a larger goal, ensuring you’re staying centered and ready to move in any direction. Focus on reactions: Quick reactions are key no matter the goal size. Practice catching and diving drills in a smaller space to keep your reflexes sharp. Train for reach and agility: Since you won’t have a full post to dive towards, work on explosive drills to improve your jump and diving reach. Jumping and lateral movement exercises will help when you transition to a full-sized post. These adjustments will help you prepare for a standard goal, so when the opportunity comes, you’ll be ready! Keep training hard! 💪⚽🧤

I started to play GK at 31yo. This is 2nd season that im registered but i did it just because of friends in the team. Had only one conditional training 0 games played and 0 friendly games. Previous 2 games we didnt have GK so they begged me to come... All i knew about game and GK was what i could see on the YT. I had literary 0 experience except indoor soccer.. First game we won away 1 3. I had 2 times 1v1 but was able to cut angle early and attacker was under pressure. They had 6, 7 corner kicks and 4 close range free kicks. Every ball that i engaged on was in my hands. Had two great CBs and instantly felt chemistry with them. Great experience. 2nd game we were losing 1 0 and conceded 2nd goal in 90th minute.. We just couldn't score. We played very high up the pitch and i had to deal with their deep balls Did it without mistake! It is so fun.

Wow, what a story! Starting as a goalkeeper at 31 and already stepping up for your team like that - impressive! It sounds like you’ve got a natural knack for reading the game, cutting angles, and working with your defenders, which is no small feat, especially with so little experience. Winning that first game and holding your ground in the second under high pressure shows great instincts and composure. It’s awesome that you’re finding so much fun in it! Keep soaking up everything you can from games, and enjoy the journey. The fact that you’re already handling 1v1s and deep balls like a pro is fantastic. Keep it up, and here’s to more great saves and experiences on the field! 💪🧤⚽

During training, I always realized how when I was retreating from the oppositions’s counterpush, I would always be positioned towards the left or right and I’d always have to look back at the goal to make sure I was centered to the goal, this is a bad habit as you should never take your eyes off the ball as a keeper, but there’s a easy fix, just find the penalty spot and you have a general idea where the center of the goal is without having to look backwards
