*TO ADDRESS A LOT OF COMMENTS:* It’s important here to not confuse cause with effect. Of course people coming to a subject new will have a massively varied discrepancy in ability. From birth we are all exposed to different stimuli, attitudes, experiences, knowledge etc. There is much scientific dispute over whether babies are born a ‘blank canvas’ or not. But the reason for this is not really what this video’s about. It’s about how we move forward from here when we face challenges. The way our education system functions now is based on what’s known as *Growth Mindset* (worth a Google to learn about it). It has proved to be a very effective method. Top line: teaching with an understanding that ability is not fixed and that failure is an opportunity to grow rather than a sign that you’re not innately good at something. That ability is varied because we haven’t been exposed to the same experiences and stimuli in our lives rather than simply born being better at music, maths, art etc.

I agree with this post more then the video. The use of the word talent is overwhelming in our culture. Sometimes good sometimes bad. I think you need both a want or drive & the time & determination to become good then great then excellent then a master. It's a long road and we aren't tested for want as a child because we don't have need and without need there is no want. You need something so you want it or more of it or more of it that expresses yourself or your world view that's a lot to ask let a lone test for before we know the alphabet! We generally look to please our parents at these ages so they have a big say in artistic education. I always find it amazing that someone will spend thousands on their child for sports or music but not photography or computer programming, and others think that paints & brushes are a waste Not going to even talk about public education. But it really comes down to drive some comments say you can't be good at something if you have no talent. But that is simply not true! There are many things people don't even think of as a skill then someone makes it into a sport. Some people think that natural talent outshines tools and complaints of tools is the sign of the untalented. I think that's absurd! Sure to some extent a camera is a camera a violin is a violin, but ever edit video on a 20 year old computer! Can one man make it as a director without help? A ballerina without a group of people to help? Drive matters! Support matters! Tools matter! You can't just chuck it down to Talent! It's a mix without one you will fail without enough of all 3 you will fail! When you hit that mix that works for you and sadly only you. You will you make it passed the wall! On to face the next wall tweaking that mix as you go.

Jamie Windsor Wow mind-blowing video. The weird thing is that while watching your video I was also thinking about the same thing "Growth Mindset". We have to learn to accept criticism and learn from our mistakes to better ourselves. Eliminating our fixed mindsets enable us to reach even greater heights in our potential. My old comprehensive school now operates a very successful consultancy trust, taking the Growth Mindset into other schools in London. They reckon that even intelligence itself can be grown by the right approach, if you start early enough. Failure, and learning from it, is critical. It's the polar opposite of the non-competitive, "everybody wins" mindset. "Nurture vs Nature" is not a zero-sum game. The key point about the growth mindset is that you are not fixed. Sure, some people may start out with more "natural talent" than others, but it's how you grow from your start-point that counts.

I think it's most important that one compare what they think they produce to what can be produced, and that's why the "masters" of any field are so influential. If people are happy with the stuff they are doing, then fine. But if they are missing something in their mind, put the time in to figure it out. It goes for anything: mechanics, driving, mathematics, woodworking, painting, photography, interpersonal skills, relationships, cooking, etc. I know that my 1st instagram photo, which I thought was amazing, was as you say rubbish. But a few thousand's later, with a goal of improving the product/image/outcome is remarkable, and remarkably rewarding. And that doesn't even include tech. Bottom line: if you focus on improvement, and really put the work into it, you will get better- at everything- no matter where on the grand scale of were when you started given what you had. And, inspirationally, improvement is just a down right nice thing to achieve, in any arena. That's why we're here, right? ... I hope.

277 rolls of 35 mm film, 5 dollars each = 1385 $ each. Not so much. And this is compared to nowadays expensive films, which were much cheaper in those days. The chemistry is not so expensive if you make it your self (and I believe they cocked it by themselves those days ). Not everything is printed. So this is not an excuse. :)

The main difference is that, in the film days, we were more thoughtful about out photos, so I think he learning happened with fewer photos than it does today. Of course, few took enough photos to get to Cartier-Bresson’s level.

While I agree with Jamie on some of the points in the video.Some people are born with an innate talent for a thing.Mozart was writing classical music at 6 years old. As for the Bresson quote,his first 10000 photos are probably better than all but 0.01 % of us will ever achieve. It doesn't mean that you can not work at improving yourself.Regardless of how many hours I spend running each day or how many hours I spend reading books on physics,I will never be faster than Bolt or more intelligent than Einstein.

Of course, there will always be standouts like Bolt and Einstein, but that's missing the point of the video, in my opinion. Not saying the playing field is level for everyone at birth, but that with hard work you can achieve great things, without being naturally talented.

Should read Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Talent does matter but at the end of the day, hard work, having the right awareness and presence of mind to seize opportunities is a lot more important. In other words, luck. But the common denominator for all forms of success, is hard work.

As said before, talent is just pursued interest. So when you tell someone they're 'talented', though you may mean it as a compliment, it's more of an insult as you're dismissing all the blood, sweat, and tears that went into getting how that person got to where they are. 'Skilled' is the word most mean when they say 'talent'.

In my opinion you can be a talented photographer without being a skilled or even a good photographer. It all comes down to the definition of talent though.

Any time someone tells me "you're so talented" I quickly correct them. I've worked hard for my improvement, simply attributing it to some magic "talent" undermines that hard work. Same goes for gear. My students tell me they want to buy the same camera as me so they can take good photos, and I have to crush their spirits by telling them a good camera doesn't make a good photographer, time and effort do. I've also seen a few photographers on KZbin using my dream gear (a Nikon D850) and their photos are so bad it actually encouraged me to stay with my D5500. TL;DR: Hard work, not talent or gear.

Jordan McChesney yes sir! I actually realized that it wasn't the gear after I got a D850, I felt I started getting better on that camera. Then I had to go back to my D5200 to use a lens that didn't cover full frame, and I couldn't really know the difference between the shots of the D5200 and the D850. At first I got bummed, then I realize that once you know were you wanna get, you'll get there regardless the gear.

Aside from physical limitations, I agree "talent" is really just a special interest that you pursue in an effective manner until you become skilled. Some people practice in the wrong way and don't achieve good results, so they think they're not talented. For example an artist who draws the same thing the same way over and over again will never evolve as much as an artist who tackles their own weaknesses and draws different things on every practice. People are too focused on "masterpieces" to display on social media and quick and easy results, so they do what's comfortable. If you produce nothing but "masterpieces", you don't evolve much. If you produce a lot of shitty work, while learning something new to add to your craft, then your next "masterpiece" will show improvement. Also, sometimes (especially as kids) we're forced into something we're simply not very interested in and get stuck in the idea that we're just "not talented". You need to really love and be really interested in that particular thing. Don't force it. Allow kids to pursue whatever "useless" skill they're interested in the most and eventually all of it will fit together.

I missed this video when it was published... I'm reminded of a valuable piece of wisdom I picked up years ago. It was directed at a particular skill, but it has merit in every type of skill so I'll generalize it: If you say you have 20 years experience doing something, but never push yourself to improve, you actually only have one year of experience 20 times over. It's possible for someone to keep repeating what they have been doing and never improve. Growth requires some form of challenge, either in a weak area or a new area of the skill. The challenging of myself is what's really helped me grow as a photographer. I feel like I spent years of just having that first year experience, and now that I'm trying new things and minimalizing my dependence on gear I'm finally growing and becoming good

Talent is something you can master more easily than most people ("it comes naturally without effort"). It doesn't mean you' re going to like it. I'm a high capacity translator who rejects 50% or more of daily jobs that come in for lack of time, without any advertisement - I'm excellent with it, naturally talented, *but I hate it* (lonesome, boring, unhealthy job). A good scenario is to find something where you have mild talent but you need some work to perfect it, and most importantly, something you like doing and pays more than just the bills.

I partially disagree.. I've had people coming into my gym who have never punched or kicked before and within 2 weeks they can punch better than some people with 6 months of training. There is a such thing as a natural talent. I've personally seen it over 10 years of coaching. I do like your other points about art being objective though.

I’m pretty sure he said art is objective to an extent (which I disagree with). Also, it’s not that people come to your gym with talent, they come to your gym with intelligence. People usually associate intelligence with just being smart, but intelligence is actually your ability to learn, and you can have intelligence in some areas and lack it in others. The people going to your gym must have some sort of intelligence for learning to control their muscles precisely. Also, this intelligence is partially genetic, which is why people say they are “born” with talent. Anyways, I think this video was just meant to inspire people, and based on the comments it did, so that’s good I guess.

Andrew Evenson Sorry I meant to say objective. And yes, some people naturally have better control over their body movements called proprioception. The only part I partially disagree with is the amount of study time. Again, I've seen people with only 3 hours of boxing training punch smoother with better form than people that have been training for half a year. In these somewhat rare cases it comes down to talent and natural ability.

dragonfist25 Exactly. That is why I say there is a talent and hard work is not enough if You think about the absolute top. I could have trained 12 hours a day since I was a kid but I would never be the top footballer. I could be very good but not the top 10 football player in the world.

I have been shooting for a long time and I am just now understanding what I want to photograph. I have had some home run shots that I planed and feel great about.. but yet have others that even with all the planning just came out bad, it was from being over confident and thinking I can just fix it in Lightroom. I have had shots that are just in the moment and are some of my best. At 46 I am still learning and as the tech changes so does the learning.. progress will never be made by sitting on the couch watching KZbin videos on how to photograph a subject. Finally, someone talking! Thank you very much! Really makes me angry, when someone says to me I'm lucky because I'm good at something. It is not luck, I spent years and years sometimes 20+ hours a day to learn and practise.

I love this. Many people tell me I'm talented at many things. Some things come easier to me than others but honestly I don't think I would actually be good at anything if I didn't work at it. I used to be terrible at art. It took years of hard work, practice, and studying to become decent at it. Accepting criticism has also helped me grow. When someone sees my art now and say "wow, you're so talented!" it's nice because I know iv improved to a point where people think my art is good but at the same time, by calling me talented, they don't know how hard and long iv worked at it. When I think "talented" I think a good beginner and not all good beginners are as great as bad beginners with passion, hard work, and dedication.

I agree with you that part of makes an artist good (or great) doesn't depends so much on natural skills, although there may be slight differences which give some people some initial advantage. I'm a professional pianist and I've learnt (kind of the hard way) that practice is what really makes me improve at this point of my life. But what I think its important to emphasize is that it is the QUALITY of that practice that matters. So people who progressed more than others in say, 5 years, they did not because of having more innate skills but the ability to understand what they need to improve, how, and having a clear image of who they are and where they want to get to. This has been made clear to me especially when I teach students and I often see they have the same difficulties as I did. And now from an experienced point of view I realize most of those can be resolved in a reasonably small amount of time if the problems are deal in the proper way.

Lets just say that there is such a thing as talent, because there is. But the word ''talent'' is often misused. I think talent is something that you're born with that you understand easier/or feel more comfortable around, than other things. But just because you have this said, ''talent'' doesn't mean your the best at that ''art,'' if you bury your talent it will not grow or get to the height/potential that it could get to. A talent still requires hard work, patience, determination, and so on. So work on your talent and learn to love it, if you don't already.

Very inspiring production to any one who doubts their ability. This applies to anything in life you have a passion or love for. If you have those two ingredients, it will give you the energy to practice and strive for perfection. Thanks for your efforts, keep up the good work!

Just discovered your channel and loving it. Your titles are very click-baity but the content is good and I love the philosophical approach. I'm often told how 'lucky' I am that I can draw as well as I do (which isn't particularly well, just better than my peers) - it sometimes gets my back up because I get up almost every morning at 3am to draw for 2 hours before I'm off to work, not to mention weekends. The same goes for my photography and 3D skills - I live my life around these skills...I have an embarrassing social life, very few real relationships and spend almost no time loitering about. I'm not lucky. If anyone spent the same time and effort instead of sitting on the couch, reading or hanging out in shops in their spare time, they would quickly find themselves just as 'lucky' as I am. I have nothing against those things, but you might wake up one day to wish you had practices something that made you happy.
