I think Dave's biggest frustration on his show is that these callers have no drive to get out of debt, no unease about their debt. They have a casual relationship with it. On the other hand, Dave and his wife got super intense, took it seriously, and paid off their debt as fast as they could (that's where the baby steps ultimately came from). He gets frustrated that no one wants to attack this with intensity the way he and his wife did.

Classic example of people trying to do too many things at once, and succeeding at nothing. They should find some way to eliminate the out-of-state apartment expense (either she moves, or he finds a job closer to home). They should also pause saving for retirement. My guess is there is a lot left unsaid with this call related to other debts--toys, credit cards, messy business ventures, etc.

Yeah im struggling to understand the difficulty here. Works out of state, has another family to contend with, blah blah... People manage two families on far less than $400k. 10 years ago, when I was a landlord, I had a two bedroom basement suite available. One of the applications was from a young couple who listed “doctor” and “accountant” as their jobs on the application. This was super out of the ordinary. I always check jobs, pay, references etc. before renting. Sure enough the woman (dr) was bringing in 12 grand a month and the guy another 6 grand. This was an $1100/month suite. They caused no issues and stayed for 2 years. They were just starting out and lived way below their means. I have no idea what they did with their $, but wouldn’t surprise me if they were knocking out a couple hundred grand of student debt.

Taxes + "Insurance" might mean medical malpractice insurance in which case that could be well over $100k per year. I agree that they aren't trying to attack the debt but Dave needs to make sure he knows what the expenses are, and bringing home $19k/month might be accurate. Are there pmts for alimony and/or child support? That can really eat at the income. Ask a few more questions about the situation before prescribing, please.

She left out that he has 3 kids from a previous marraige living in another state. His child support is probably north of 2K a month easy on a 400K income. So that explains some of the missing money. She said they were bringing in 18K a month. He said "taxes aren't 50 percent of your income" It's not. But he is probably losing 30 percent to taxes at that income bracket,(the highest two income brackets are 32 and 37 percent. I'd say 400K puts him in the top 5 percent of income earners and he is paying somewhere in that ballpar) and then after taxes, he pays another 20-25 percent to child support payments for 3 children he has from a previous relationship she said. So add those together, and 50 percent of his income is going to child support and taxes. Sounds about right.

@@jgray690 Only the income above certain amounts gets taxed at higher rates. His income would make his total effective income tax 21.5%. Yes, he hits the 32% bracket, but if he is married filing jointly, only the money above $364k gets the 32% rate. His take home pay ignoring child support would be $26k per month.

@@zachjones2346 that's just federal tax rate. You still aren't accounting for SS/medicare taxes AND state taxes taking another 6-8 percent on top of his federal rate. Also you can't ignore his CS is probably taking a large chuck, they take 20 percent for ONE child, and then they add another 5-6 percent for additional children maxing usually at about 35 percent. So he is realistically losing another 33-35 percent of his NET income (for 3 children) for Child support. You can't 'ignore' that he is losing probably over 30 percent of his net to CS. so whatever his take home pay is, deduct another 33 percentit. so that 26K a month turns into 18K or 19K. Which is what she said. There is no 'max' usually on CS payments. It's based solely on your income in most states. That's why celebs like Britney Spears is paying her ex 40k A MONTH in child support payments. So he could be paying 8K a month or more. just based on his net income.

This was the "aha! moment" revealed by the classic book "Millionaire Next Door", that many high income professionals in America were actually persistent under-accumulators of wealth (due to alot of the "expenses" as mentioned here)... They need to play better "defense" (save/invest/pay down debt) as their offense (earnings) is already strong....

I promised myself I would never take out another loan and became completely debt free about 3 years ago. I agree with Dave’s advice but disagree with the level of zeal he recommends you use to tackle it. These people are considering buying 2 cars for a total of 40k which is very reasonable and necessary part of modern life not a luxury.
