In the west, we're not shifting away from Blackfishing, we're just shifting toward multiracial/looking racially ambiguous fishing. It's all about having stereotypical: Black girl shape, Asian eyes, Black girl lips, white girl nose, and Middle Eastern eyebrows/cheekbones/bone structure. There's hundreds of writings and videos on this. Of course there are some people who lean more into the Black or Asian or Middle Eastern aesthetic, but it's mostly a combination of all these styles in one person pushing us towards a very homogenous look. I’m half Chinese and half white, 4th generation Chinese American. With that being said… my family has little to no Chinese culture embedded into our lives. I’ve been trying to put more effort into tapping into my culture whether it be cooking, learning Chinese, learning historical arts, but I’ve found many people around me are uncomfortable with what I’m doing. I look more white than Asian and even my name is quite European, so many times my friends will forget I’m also Chinese and be uncomfortable that I mention Chinese cultural hobbies that I’ve picked up (it was just Chinese calligraphy and reading Chinese books). Even my mom, who is full Chinese, is uncomfortable. I know being exotic is fetishized and I saw it all through high school even if I was average looking, but being biracial is really tough being rejected from both sides of the coin. This trans race stuff makes it more difficult for biracial people who are struggling to connect back with their culture without meeting even more judgement and stigmatization along the way. And yeah, you shouldn’t care about what other people think. But it really feels terrible to be told you aren’t something when you are over and over again… so what am I in the end? Anyways this was a long rant but it’s all I could think of during the video. Being Asian is trendy and it seems to the people around me that all I want to do is fit in the trend, whereas really I’m just finally an adult who realizes what they missed out on growing up.

Let’s not forget…..these artists do have a team of people, and part of their team includes makeup artists. Indian girl here. As you asked about bindi, the whole point of Indian aesthetic is to make you look mature and modest. Even Indian girls don't just wear traditional clothes for show. They wear it for special occasions to show women modesty and maturity. If Selena is using it in her video just like that which has seductive lyrics then its just not right because people who follow her will pick the tredn up but would never use this style with it's real meaning. Thats straight up disrespectful. I dont know about apologizing but i do want her to learn before she ises any other culture's aesthetic for any music or performance projects of hers. Great video. My best friend is Indian-American (first generation), & most of the Indian culture & movies she & her parents showed me were very romanticized- no sex scenes, sometimes not even kissing. It was very modest. They even gave me a sari that they thought would look good on me (it didn't show the waist) but my best friend's sari did. Neither were supposed to be sexualized, they wore those outfits to birthdays, weddings, etc. My friend still dresses modestly & doesn't show off her body because that was just part of her culture. Yes, she had a sexual awakening like most teenagers/adults, but she wasn't using traditional outfits to pick up men. Selena Gomez has no business wearing simeone else's traditional garb to appear sexualized when they aren't even her traditions. It was as bad as Katy Perry going full Cleopatra, & Egyptians were offended by it. I think everyone is entitled to their opinions, but cultural appropriation and treating traditional wear like a costume without the respect it deserves is disrespectful.

It's so interesting to see how people from different countries growing up have different experience when it comes to appearance. I was called a ghost or looking sick from being naturally very fair-skinned. When we were teenagers some parents gave money for tanning sessions and dad of my friend made her go there before prom. Also some might remember dark faces light neck situation from foundation. But honestly we should stop this obsession with colors of skin or hair or appearance trends. As a white person, the thing that angers me the most about fellow white people who try to change their race, either to look Asian or Black, is that when they get called out for things like doing braids which will most likely damage their hair, is that they then say "Oh but white people have braids too, look at the Vikings!" 1. You're gaslighting the people who are warning you that you will ruin your hair 2. That's a huge lack of knowledge about the diversity of European culture because there are different braids depending on each culture, and 3. Yes, we do have braids as well so why not embrace your own braids from your own culture which are made for your hair type?
@h8616 Жыл бұрын
OMG EXACTLYYYY!!!!! i’m not white but the braids in different white/european cultures are so beautiful yet the white people appropriating the hairstyles from BLACK cultures don’t even wear them or embrace them but as soon as black people call them out for it then they gaslight us and say that the “vikings had braids”, “slavics has braids”, etc. yet they don’t even wear them…??? like make it make sense. how are you going to use that as ur argument against black people who are calling you out about the cultural appropriation of our hairstyles yet you don’t even wear your own cultural hairstyles that you claim to have??? imagine if all the white people and non black people in general who appropriate black hairstyles just wear their own cultural hairstyles, showcasing the different styles they have in their cultures and its beauty just like black people do.

Funny how lots of the clips from tiktok have kpop videos for inspiration for their transformation. its always the most thin, light skinned examples and you'll never really see people wanting to race swap with south east asian and those of darker skin tones. It's always a matter of picking and choosing what they want from that race. I think some people are genuinely so disconnected from their lives and family that they would rather swap into something more "desirable". Either way... those who want to race swap likely aren't doing well mentally.

In the film industry (Bollywood and others) the fairer actors (also in Latin American countries) have more opportunities than actors who have darker skin. Re: the Asian fishing, stars like Bella Hadid and possibly Ariana Grande have had eye surgery (I think called fox eye) to make their eyes appear more Asian. It’s not reversible and it’s just sad that so many people don’t like their features. I am a black South African girl and my ethnic group is Xhosa (*one of the many cultural groups we have here in SA) so growing up, I mostly watched and read American things and I think my understanding was, wow, these people (Americans) are everywhere, that must be because they are better than us and kinder people etc. my point is, it's not irrational to aspire to be like the people you see on TV but I wanted to be a WHOLE OTHER RACE and LOOK NOTHING LIKE MYSELF! That has obviously changed and I'd like to say that I am very much proud to be black and even MORE proud to be South African and it's wonderful to see more people that are comfortable in there own skin so I hope I can prove to you that all it takes is some self discovery (I didn't know how to end it, sorry if this was long 🤭😝🥰) Ps- I haven't finished this video so I can't say anything about how amazing it was (which I'm sure it will be 😝) so yeah, I'm gonna love it and I will post another comment +I think!!??!?🥰💖💖😊 OMG! Don't get me wrong, I love being me but I think blasians are unique and cute and being compared to one feels like a complement to me ANYWAY, I found it sooo funny when Oli London kept congratulating celebs into the 'community' when the people themselves never even said so 😂😂 Thanks for reading, hope NK see's this 🤞😝🙌💞💕🤭😭😘✨✨🔥🗣️

The problem now is that people often term everything appropriation. When wearing a saree correctly is appropriation….. we have created a set up that means it is almost impossible to explore other cultures. Also, this is very much western. People in Asia and many other places do not think about this issue in this way. Culture is formed from traditions. Traditions are ritual and restraint. Therefore, is it surprising it is disappearing in places where individual freedom is all people care about?

He once said that as a thank you for teaching him about my country and being interested and appreciating of his culture and media, he'll get me a hanbok, a traditional Korean clothing. They do not have good opinions about african people at all. Look up some of the things China has said and done for some colorful examples. And it does not stop there depending on what specific asian ethnicity you are other asians will be racist to you. Look up asian immigrant workers in Japan for a recent easy example. Racism being seen as bad and wrong at all is western. Often other asians are shamed within their own society if they get tanned as it is seen as low class… so no discrimination is very much a thing.

They want the looks, probably only kpop idol looks, but have no idea what its like to be an Asian. The worst part is, they’re aiming for the ideal east Asian beauty standard. Pale skin, big eyes, high nose bridge, or looking half Asian. They aren’t tryna look like us darker skinned Asians. Its f’ed up and perpetuates colorism

One thing I really appreciate about my relatives is the exchange of care and knowledge ab hair cair and skincare health.. some I can use but not everything is for me.. 🤷🏻♀️ One thing I always wanted as I was growing up was to have a sew in (my hair is straight so braids would be a major fail) 💀🤷🏻♀️.. But I learned to love from afar 💜 Don’t know why ppl can’t do the same

He identified as trans and non binary a little while back but he’s now branded himself as a detransitioner. Now he is an anti trans “activist,” who is grifting on the conservative speaking circuit.

I remember growing up I hated being Asian and I wanted to be a White American with blonde hair, blue eyes and pale skin. I was severely bullied for my ethnicity/race at such a young age. So, I started watching more American movies, learned perfect English to the point I always get perfect score and have a low grade with my native language. It was really hard for me to fit in with my own people too because I was so busy fitting in with the foreigners rather than just being happy for what I am.

I liked being as tan as I could get every summer when I was a kid but I never felt like that was me trying to change my race cause it was still my skin, just a little more tan from the sun lol. Idk if I've ever wanted to change my race, but I've definitely wished that it felt more acceptable for me to embrace stuff (like aesthetics, slang, culture, etc) of different races without ridicule or people trying to say "oh so you wish you were Black" or whatever. Sometimes felt like people just want you to be your race (in every sense) and embrace/appreciate nothing else, which seems almost as racist to me as someone pretending to be another race for the benefits of being exotic or whatever without the racism. I hope I'm making sense, I guess what I'm trying to say is, when is it okay for people to wear makeup/hair that they think looks good, or speak in ways that sounds cool/interesting to them, etc without it being considered as appropriation/offensive?

It’s always okay. If someone is telling you you can’t speak a certain way or dress a certain way because your white……honey that’s racism.

Hi there! I recently started watching your videos and I just love the way you express your opinions in such a calm and cool way. I agree with everything you said in this video. As an Indian, I will say that Selena Gomez wearing a bindi ten years ago isn't cultural appropriation, at least according to me. It does get annoying when Westerners take our cultural symbols and claim it as their own (eg: goop girl Gwyneth claiming that she popularized yoga), but them wearing/using Indian cultural symbols while acknowledging where it's originated from isn't wrong. People don't own a culture, so trademarking something like a bindi or a saree or even yoga is pretty stupid. Anyone can wear these, anyone can take part in these. As long as they're not mocking or making fun of the culture and its people, it's fine. I mean, we wear Western clothes like jeans-tshirts all the time. That doesn't make it cultural appropriation, just like how Selena wearing a bindi or Gigi wearing a saree isn't. Also would like to add something: just because an individual is wearing something that comes from a particular culture doesn't mean they have to recognize and talk about the entire history of that place/people/culture. I remember seeing people online being mad about Emma Chamberlain wearing a necklace (which was presumably Indian) w/o acknowledging the "oppression" and "colonization" that was associated with said necklace. Which is so stupid, according to me, because just because someone is wearing a piece of accessory doesn't mean they have to turn into Wikipedia pages about its history. Anyways, I'm all up for cultural appreciation and it's really fun to see non-South Asians add their own personal touch to our clothings or accessories, as long as they're not mocking us :) Hope that was helpful!

I feel like wishing you were white with blonde hair and blue eyes is a universal poc experience, and these people don't know how it feels to wish you looked like the other kids in a country you're an immigrant in or having other kids at school pull their eyes back and call you slurs

I am north african but grew up in europe. I always wanted to look stereotypically white as all the pretty girls in my class had blond hair and blue eyes. All the cool girls were white and I hated comming from a diffrent ethnic background. I also feel like people have become so much more open to other cultures, but this was less the case over 10 years ago. I was already a weird kid and being a diffrent ethnicity made me feel even more lonely. At some point I got into Japanese culture when I was a teen and that is the first time I felt pretty: The pretty girls all had brown/dark hair, dark eyes and pale skin. They were also short like me. So I went through this weird phase where I wanted to look Asian, because I tried again to fit in somewhere. Currently as a grown adult women I am fine with my ethnicity, I actually dislike it when people tell me I don't look North African, but look European or Asian (I look quite racially ambiguous). I felt lonely and left out, being from an immigrant family and growing up in a diffrent culture was quite challenging, but right now I just feel like myself and I feel no desire to look like a diffrent race/ethnicity.

i just wanna point out that looking "exotic" isn't necessarily a trend its just human evolution, traits that are uncommen in your ethnic background are more attractive because it shows variation in the gene pool. it just so happens that combinations of racial features create a more unique beautiful face (ex. An African American man with very bright green eyes will more times then not be more attractive then one with brown.) thats why the Kardashians with there mix of Armenian plus the addition of the butt was so wowing like you said its normal on a black women so its therefore not gonna have that same wowing effect.
@Boohurghhoo Жыл бұрын
That's literally what makes it a trend tho..? (or at least "trendy now") like that's the point w/ the video and the problem w/ these whole "rcta communities". It shouldn't be so desirable and attractive on you bc it's from another ethnic background thats not urs and you don't belong to so it makes you better. It def shouldn't make you any more than either, like your this perfectly built human bc ur taking "exotic traits" (semi stereotypical ) that weren't and didn't get passed down to you. Also, that's what makes it "exotic" esp starting from a rather mundane average base to get this unique perfect combo look. I get it, that's how it happens in society but again that's literally the point, bc of how far, fetishized, obsessive, deluded, and ignorant this whole problem becomes. Actually, how it is tbw. Although again it shouldn't be (like why would you find a black man more attractive w/ green eyes just bc it's uncanny to you instead of the brown eyed ones? Or even better if they're lightskin instead of that/too dark and boring looking yet..."you" replicate that and that's why ur looking for the "unique" and "exotics").Esp bc it clearly isn't happening naturally-for most. Another thing I wanna point out is not all blk girls are extra curvy and all that with a lot of butt which just adds onto the same problems (ignorance,stereotypes, etc) oto if it's not good for or on the original it shouldn't be deemed good on the copycat. Dont denounce these traits when you see them on others (but you want it so badly for urself to urself, "eventually") and downplay the feelings behind it and problems attached w/ it just to do something stupid like this. Bc of ur poor thinking skills and wants being more important for w.e reason. Yet still, throughout it all "you" have the same ignorant thinking process even w/ those features, you and you alone desired so badly after clowning one way or the other on the original.

i love the way you opened the video with a question. "have you ever wanted to change your race?" my god, the cultural shock I'm experiencing right now is INSANE. i think that's a question you could only ask to people from a certain place. Why? In recent years, I've seen people appropriate asian culture, follow me here, when years ago it was all about appropriating black or latin american culture, and i've seen influencers and celebrities switch races like it's underwear. And i find it interesting that i've seen that only because I consume and keep up with content from America, Canada, the UK, basically english speaking, first world, privileged countries. At least where i live, the concept of wanting to change your race or even asking that question out sounds DERANGED. Like we got other problems 😭 I'm sincerely sending so much healing energy and love to y'all cause this is .... sum else.

I’m not Chinese, but growing up in a Chinese school and have mostly Chinese friends, and I don’t really look like my race that much, but I do find it funny and amusing that once they found out I’m not Chinese, I always laughed it off and pulled their legs a bit, before telling them the truth. And honestly, it doesn’t bother me that much. I do speak mandarin, know their culture, and mostly love their cuisine, but it doesn’t come to my mind that I want to be Chinese or I hate my ethnicity and just love me myself for who I am. It all comes down to ignore these “boxes” that “progressive people” invented themselves and understand other people’s culture. I know some of my friends or colleagues who able to speak few languages cuz of the work environment or working in another country. And I’m currently trying to self-study French (and struggling too) and learn their culture and such. It’s a fun experience overall but it doesn’t to the point make me feel like I wanna change my race to be a French. Look, everyone is unique and has their own talent, just tap into it and focus on yourself, your life will be much simpler and able to shift your focus on other more important thing.

Hi! I'm black, white, and Filipino. My dad is black, while my mom is white and Filipino. I'm also racially ambiguous. I've been told I look Indian, Hispanic, Afro-latina, and other things. Though, I'd say I look Hispanic, I of course, am not. And with the diverse mix of races and ethnicities I hold. It really has been hard for me to find my identity. So, I definitely understand the mindset of the people in the RTCA group. During lockdown, I spent basically my whole life on my phone, and that got me obsessed with kpop. So much to where I did wish I was born Korean or with a mix of Korean. Now I didn't go as far as trying to *change* my race. Since maybe early or mid 2022, I've let of that obsession (thankfully). Along with other factors, I've really been stuck on my whole racial identity. Sometimes, I kind of want to be Afro-latina, so I can stop being so confused with myself. Anyways, I can understand the position that people of the RTCA group are in. I just I hope they get help in finding themselves, rather than making a fool of themselves trying to be someone else.
