When I was 11, I got an allowance of $5/week. I would use that money to buy a pack of Urza's Saga hoping to open my favorite card in the set, Gaea's Cradle (I was apparently a prophet). I stopped after buying 5 packs, because in 4/5 of them, the rare was Lightning Dragon. Instead, I saved and bought a Cradle every month (it was $20 at the time) until I had a playset of four. A few years later, some kid at school stole a bunch of cards from my school bag when I wasn't looking and all four were gone. :(
@not_luciiaa766316 күн бұрын
Something similar happened to me once. I had just gotten a fat stack of pokemon cards to open after my school choir show in elementary school (I had a solo, so it was a gift from my parents). I got some cool cards from it, and added them so this deck of solely ex/mega cards. I brought that deck to school for some reason (I think to show my friends), and I kept it in my side pocket. At the end of the day, they were gone. (not the first time I lost that many good card too). I stand with you on stolen cards 😔😔

Just remember old Magic sets had way more cards than most modern sets, so it was more difficult to find a specific rare. Only a handful of sets today have 300+ cards, but it was pretty common for the first block of sets to have that back then,.
@jonbrewer29717 күн бұрын
On the flip side, there were no mythics, and the only special cards were foils.
@corey223217 күн бұрын
@jonbrewer297 True, but didn't rares from old sets not all have the same odds? I'm pretty sure that even without actual mythics, some cards were more rare & had lower odds of pulling.

Urzas saga was my favorite expansion, insert generic story of a guy who regrets selling his cards way too early because the Gaea's Cradle playset alone would be something to behold today. Back then Tolarian Academy was the most valuable one until it got restricted. In the 90s we had one dude at the local gamestore who was ahead of of everyone. Always wore a oversized suit and carried a suitcase, bought Show&Tell's in bulk for low because "he just liked the card". His card evaluations beat Inquest to the point he predicted the increase before Inquest adjusted, Tradewind Rider from the Tempest Xpac was one example. Nice trip down memory lane.
@SuperGitarooman16 күн бұрын
With how crazy new expansions always are for older tcg's its become so hard to find an analyst who can actually predict card values before the announcements. Those players were always ahead of the times.
